Kind of hard to say.  You watch or read what you enjoy.  What that is is totally dependent on you yourself.  I can say that you should have an understanding of the following:

DeathNote
FullMetal Alchemist
Naruto
D.Gray-Man
Meloncholy of Haruhi Suzimaya
Sailor Moon
Kingdom Hearts
Final Fantasy
Ouran High School Host Club
Pokemon
Bleach
Dragonball & Dragonball Z
One Piece

These are the main shows you will see being portrayed in cosplay  (If you know of others please feel free to post them)

Other shows that are common are:

Lucky Star
Kanon
Clannad
Azumanga Daiho
Gurran Laggan
Code Geass
Fruits Basket
Any Studio Ghibli movie
InuYasha
Ruroni Kenshin (Samurai X)
Carcaptor Sakura
Trigun
Hellsing
Gundam (all versions)
Macross (ditto)
Chobits
Shugo Chara
Ghost in the Shell SAC
Cowboy Bebop

etc, etc, etc....

Believe me.  With such an open request, YOU WILL BE FLOODED WITH OPTIONS!

Hope this gives you a start.  To find out more about each of these go to Wikipedia, AniDB, or ANN.  I don't have time to link them all for you.  My spelling may not be correct either, but it should get you close.

Happy browsing.   ;D

Here is my list: http://myanimelist.net/animelist/Trumby

I would make a list on there of what you've seen and it will give you some recommendations based on those. Or you could always just go with the more popular ones first, like Wuntvor listed.

Other people have posted simular questions as to "what should I watch?" and I always have to laugh a little because I am pretty drawn to a specific type of anime/manga.

Yuri/Shoujo Ai
(Girls loving girls or lesbian anime) Im mostly watch the cute happy shows and can give you lots of options if your into that kind of show. Just let me know!

Beware posting "what should I watch" topics unless you are prepared to face the FLOODS OF RESPONSES! We anime fans can be picky and finicky about our far-Eastern entertainment whereas some just like everything (though that's kinda rare...)

I suggest watching some older/classic anime. My favorite is Revolutionary Girl Utena. And I'm surprised no one has suggested Neon Genesis Evangelion (that's practically required watching for some... if you were to believe Gainex's continuous milking of the Beast). If you like sports, and particularily bastketball, Slam Dunk! is a basketball comedy that's pretty good.

For newer stuff, Last Exile is really good! And Boogiepop Phantom is good too (and if you like Boogiepop, you might like Serial Experiments Lain).

And if you like the techno group Daft Punk, check out their music-video-movie Intersteller 5555, which is the music videos to the "Discovery" album. It's a collaboration with legendary anime director Leiji Matsumoto and it's really good!

Good luck in your newfound nerdular hobby! ;D

EXCEL SAGA

In Japanese!!  The English version will have you running out of the room to escape the incredibally annoying Excel.  I couldn't stand her voice through episode 1.

I dunno, one episode is about a marathon with Excel. oof. Besides she seems she ought to be Jeff Foxworthy's cousin or something. The one that isn't smarter than a 5th grader.
Have Fun
