Dolly Making! ^__^
« on: February 16, 2006, 03:09:41 pm »
Hey hey everyone! ^^ This'll be my first convention, and while I'm running around getting pictures and having fun, I'd like to run a table in the Artist Alley!

 I'm a doll-maker, using main felt pieces to create a doll from video games or anime. I've never done an actual character doll though, only a Legolas for my sister once XD She likes Orlando Bloom...

 Anyways, I've gotten lots of experience of making dolls - I make them from my buddies at school, when it's their birthday or for Christmas if they're lucky. It takes me about 3-5 hours to make a doll, with extra things and with reasonable quality. Now I'd like to extend my dolls to public people, and I've read up on the topic of selling fan creation things in these other threads.

 I'm going to start making dolls next week, putting them in little baggies and storing them away. I don't know which dolls to make though - I've got a sketchy idea on what Anime characters to do, but it'd be really helpful if I really asked people what they'd like to see available ^^

 Any replies are appreciated!

I make 1/6 miniatures based on the 12 inch Gi Joe or 11.5 inch Barbie’s.   I made a Gladiator with box art and he had leather Armour and a tiny metal sword and shield (a tea pot lid).  I made a Biker to go on a 1.6 scale model motorcycle and I made him a tiny black leather jacket from black deerskin and even added a tiny zipper.   They give me strange looks when I’m in a thrift store and I go thorough the whole bin of used Barbie’s looking for the ONE that does not have crap in the hair and missing part.  My next project will be Pirate princess Barbie

Hi all! I'm Ellen, aka Rem, and I run the Fan Creation Station for Kumoricon, and its sister, the Creation Station at Sakuracon.

I would love to cordially invite you both to consider hosting workshops to help others learn your crafts, and I would love to have you run them at our Fan Creation Station!

Interested?

Ah, Mr/Miss Vondan, that sounds awesome! Hehe, What a neat idea... I love picking through thrift shops, finding fabrics to use, t-shirts and clothing to "alter". My mother doesn't like me doing that, she thinks my creative streak of slicing and re-piecing things isn't good. ^^; Heh, you sound dedicated to your creations - a tiny zipper even? Ah, it'd be awesome to see your work! I'll try to post up some pictures of my dollies when I get to doing them!

 Good luck on that next project, Vondan!

 Wow, you run the Fan Creation Station, Miss Ellen? Ja, it's nice to meet you, then, my name is Victoria. *shakes your hand* I'd love to attend! I'm working out a schedule, on what needs to be done, registeration and getting there, though (_ _); I'll do my best though!

 Hn..I'll try to remember all the dolls I've made so far.

 FF7 - Cloud Strife (2 of them)
FF7- Vincent Valentine (2 of them)
LoZ - Link ( Various sizes- Bigger than palm and mini size)
Inuyasha- Inuyasha doll (2 of them)
Inuyasha - Kagome
Inuyasha - Shippou
Kingdom Hearts - Sora
Kingdom Hearts - Riku
Kingdom Hearts - Kairi
Sonic Video Games - Miles Tails Prower
Rurouni Kenshin - Rurouni Kenshin

 I know I've done more... XD

 I make a basic doll pattern - I sew a torso, two basic arms (They look like finger covers XD), two basic feet, and a head. Depending on what the character wears, I'll use the color for the arms/legs if the clothing the person wears is straight black or something. But usually, I make all my dolls have flesh tone felt bodies. Then I start adding on the clothes, it's easier to add the head on last, so I can get the shirts and tops on easily. After making/piecing together clothes, I do the head/face and then hair and extra stuff.

 I'll post up a picture of some months ago work. I've gotten alot better ^^;

 Thank you for the invitation, Miss Ellen!

@ Rem   They would not allow my miniatures in the con they have live steel weapons and would insists on tiny little peace bonds

  I sill don’t know if I will be able to go, The talks about the movie are still in the works and if it is filmed this year it will be though October (just because the historical battle took place in Montana in October does not mean we should film then/there, I want them to film in LA with snow made from corn flakes).  But if that falls though I want to go to every event and con in several genres I can Sci-Fi, SCA, Black Powder, Ren Fair and Anime.  I need to make up for not going to any con or nerd events in the last 10 years.  IF I do go I will try and make up some sort of demo but wont know till July

@ Catgirl Rin Tin Tin .  It's Dan, Von Dan 0013

http://vondan.com/dan/studio/golden.jpg

As you can see I’m so dashing that’s why Rem keeps inviting me to do a demo so she can see me again.

There is actually a big market in redressing 1/6 scale male figures like GI Joe in Military and historical uniforms, and high-end fantasy and glamour outfits for Barbie.  They Sell 50 dollar base bodies just for some one to build off but I’m to cheap.  Since loose male bodies are not as common at thrift stores I get every one I find and then get choosey about the female bodies or Barbie (The other day I was checking the legs of every one to find a Barbie with the jointed knees from the horse set so she can sit on a motorcycle (so Biker Joe can have a Biker B***H on the other empty bike)) and damn it the one time I found an actual GI Jane body the feet had been melted off and some one had given her tattoos on the lower back like a sorority girl.

And your dolls remind me of how my aunt said they made dolls when they were kids.  Things like Flower, Sugar and grains came in cloths sacks.   Not all the sacks were plain white like on little house on the prairie, some times they were in colors or patterns to entice ladies to buy that sack of food if they wanted to make cloths from the sack.  And the white ones often had pictures or logos on the front.  So they would cut out the company mascot or the pictures and sew on a back and stuff them to make dolls.

Hey Rin Rin if you could make Tohru from Fruits Basket, I would totally die! I would scoop one up sooo fast! anyway, you should think about it, cause SD keychains are just not enough!

Annyway, I suggest taking pictures of the dolls with a digital camera for us all to see!

*waves to all* Hello, I am Michi. I run Ellen's errands at the conventions and help her out billions. ^_^ The dollies sound like a great idea. I think it would be a fun panel. I've run some panels myself, and improved on one or two.

Lists of anime...

Revolutinary Girl Utena
Sailor Moon
Samurai Champloo
Gundamn Wing

The list can go on and on. If you need ideas for dollies to make. Just poke around the boards. I think everyone will jump at you.

Oh! You can also make the dollies, and get a table in the Dealer's Room, where things are sold. You'd make quite a bit of money. Of course, you could also take orders or something like that.

I can do a Tohru! ^___^ I've got the right felt color for her uniform, I'll try to get it done tonight, if I can! I love Fruits Basket - I was planning on making the whole cast as tiny little dollies, and send them to the author of the manga. ^^ She puts an address on the back of mangas where you can send fanart and other things for her - I think she'd like that.

 Neh neh, it's nice to meet you, Vondan-San =D *shakes your hand again* Nin nin! Your creations sound interesting - could you post up some pictures sometime? I'd love to see your work!

Hoy, Remmy-Chan, I'm not planning on going to Sakuracon, sorry ^^; But thanks for the offer there! I'll do my best to turn up for Kumoricon though!

Ahhh, Michi-San, those are great ideas for dolls! I bet the Gundam Wing boys would go fast! I'd keep a Duo Maxell doll all for me... XD Dealers room, huh? Ne ne, I'll PM you and find out more - it'd be neat to talk to you!

 Hey Leashy-Chan, your name reminds me of the Leashy from "Quest for Glory - Shadows of Darkness" - Ever hear of it? XD Anyways... Ja! Thank you for the doll ideas! Miaka would be an easy doll to make recognizable ^^ *claps hands* Eee...I'll see if I could do Pokemon, perhaps =D Thanks! I'll PM you when I get home - I'm at school right now, the reason will be mentioned later in this post

 Oieee! SuperJazz - that sounds so great! The materials I use to make the dolls are felt pieces - any size is great! I've used so many sizes, and the way I make the clothes, I "piece" everything together. In other words, if the doll's costume has a grey bracer on the arm, I use a small rectangle grey piece and sew it on. ^^ Other than felt, if it's a special job, I use faux fur, and recently I've started to use superglue on tricky parts ^^; Ehh....For swords and everything like armor/shields/swords - I use paint and cereal boxes and all.

 Thanks, Remmy-Chan! I'll show you some other work I've done. My friend Andy, for halloween, wanted to be FF7 Cloud Strife AC - I made his armor and pieced together the sleeve, the skirt/thing, and his shirt by using thrift store stuff. ^^ I had alot of fun with this! But I didn't make his sword.. (_ _)Ah well...

http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/8463/vicandypose7jt.jpg - Andy

http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/8334/vicandyjoel5dn.jpg - The guy on the right is Joel - I made his claw and thats it ^^

http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/6996/vicandyanotherpose1ii.jpg - Andy again

http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/586/vicandyswordagain8md.jpg - Andy again again

http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/2307/vicjoel3pt.jpg - Joel again ^^

Yeah Once time in P Land we needed DVR to burn some anime and next to the computer store was a Jo Ann's and at 11 in the evening I went in (while my friends hid in the nerdmacho computer store) and got 15 sets of patterns.  I save the coupons for the big items like the $40 cutting pads and I get a merchants discount.

Alright, I finished the Tohru! XD It took a bit longer with the blue edging I had to do on parts of her Fuku though, so it was about... 5 hours? Geh, I had doubling back to make a thick blue line on her collar and cuffs. I need thicker blue thread ^^;

http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/3986/resizedtohrudark6ij.jpg - Front View

http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/1488/resizedtohru29gn.jpg - Tohru!!!! ^^

 I know the quality of the photo isn't good, but what do you guys think? I was thinking, selling them $5 a dolly - that's why I set my price around here for the few requests I've done for people.

 Na no da! The problem with felt is that the fibers sometimes mix a little bit - I'm going to put Tohru in a little plastic bag so she doesn't get the white on her fuku all dirty/start taking on a blue color from her blue uniform.

 I think I'll continue with another Fruits Basket person, or a Chobits! I think Chii would be a good seller! XD And I want to make an Edward from FMA! And some Kyou Kara Maou - Gunter/Wolfram/Gwendal ^^ Ra Ra!

 Hn, I could do some props, you're right, Remmy-Chan! I've got a few ideas on what to start soon next month!

Hoy! I meant to post up pictures of my latest creations but the digital camera, which is my dad's, needs new batteries! So they're charging up right now.

 I've made a Tohru so far, a Yuki, Kagura, and a Kyo! ^^ I've also got Ayame's and Momiji's body finished, they just need heads.

 The finished dolls, they all, at first, had their faces drawn on with a permanent marker (thick too!). I thought it looked not very good with the rest of the work I put into the dolls. So, yesterday, I went to town with my parents - the whole family went because it was dentist day. No cavaties for Vicky! Anyways, I stocked up on felt as I have recently cleaned out the local craft shop of all the skin-colored felt.

I found a perfect shade of brown I've been needing desperately - a light brown, not the really dark or barely brown color. I'm going to use it for Miaka or something else because I'm only going to do the main characters of Fruits Basket before I move onto to another series.

(Should I do all the Sohma's, will they sell even better because there are no other UFO character dolls available for them? I'm planning on doing Shigure, Hatsuharu and that's it, for Fruits Basket.)

 Ahem, and yesterday I was looking for fabric paints, mainly black and white to paint on faces for the dolls because I thought it'd look much better/professional. I found no cheap fabric paint, so I bought acrillac paint hoping it would work. I got home last night and tested it out and it worked beautifully! I was so worried it might not, but I bought many paintbrushes, though rather cheap, and thin ones too! So the dollies, I'll post pictures of, and that's that!

Oieeeeeeee! *hops around and hands everyone some pocky* I'm so happy! Yesterday night as well, I made up a new doll pattern! I'm going for bigger and larger! Yes, I'm making just over a foot dolls! I think I'll do more than one.. ^^; *gets ruler out*

 Ah, yes! I've got the body all finished - torso with legs (up to the calves) part, and have sewed the arms on and have a neck all ready. 12 inches reaches just above the armpits! XD I've never done anything this big before! Yayyy!

 Yesterday too, it was a great day to find crafty thigns, I went to 2 thrift shops. I absolutely LOVE thrift shops, great to find cheap fabrics and crafty things! It was $5 bag day at one of them, so I found a leather skirt to add to my fabric collection, and an odd sort of pair of pants - it's like leather but not really. It's not thick enough to be so, and it feels more plastic-y than leather. Anyone help me out on defining the fabric type? It'd great, thin enough to sew, I think, and will surely be of use in my 6 month goal of making 50 dolls before Kumoricon!

 It's a brown/dark burgundy color!

 Right, at the thrift shop, I bought a thick plastic-ish bag, a light blue for a pair of high-heel-ish shoes to sew onto the calves of this "+12Feet" doll. I bought some funny light blue shorts and made them into *tight* pants, with a thin black line running down each leg. And a line running from the top of the pants to the crouch ^^;

 I found a dark purple/brown pair of pants, and bought a shirt a purpler shade, to make a long-sleeved lapel coat. I did everything today, except the shoes, that was last night's work! And I need to make a t-shirt, add some defining to the coat, which will have a black fur collar, and fur edging around each wrist cuff.

The t-shirt will be a light lime green, but I'm using a slightly darker shade, I hope no one notices it! The coat I made is supposed to be a bit more dark purple than it is, but with my reference, the series saved on my computer and viewed on my DivX Player, shows the coat in different shades. Ah well, it still looks good! And I need to do a belt at the top of the pants, so I don't have to hem there. I'm really doing my best at this big doll, I want it to look great!

 I need to do a head too, with felt hair, glasses, and I have to do a superb job on the face! And I have to put white bandages around the neck! Which is good, because I'm horrible at connecting heads to necks - the bandages will cover this probably messy job.

 Can anyone guess what this doll is going to be? I don't think there is any offical doll of this character, and I hope to make $20 on this one, if I'm very lucky! ^^ It also, to my surprise, stands on it's own, tilts a tiny bit to the *checks* If it's facing the computer screen and I'm looking at it from behind, it's tilting to the left just a bit. Ah well!

 Guess who it is! ^^ And I hope all of you are doing great! <333

Oh and thank you, Leashy-Chan, Remmy-Chan! =D Maybe you can have it in your home, Leashy-Chan, if you're quick enough! I'm only doing one  doll of each character, so the 50 doll-goal will of 50 different dolls, no extras or anything ^^; I'd rather diversify with many different "tastes" (dolls) rather than do 10 of Tohru, and 10 of 5 different characters ^^;

 Your PM sounds interesting! I'll reply to it next!

 And Remmy-Chan - ground breaking? XD Hasn't anyone else sold handmade dolls at a Kumoricon convention before? Ano, workshop? What do you mean by that? I thought it was just a table that I run, workshop, sounds like I'm going to teach others to make them or something. ^^;

 Much love, and guess my "+12-Feet" doll's name and series!

yes a workshop---meaning showing people how you put a doll together from start to finish

that was what i thought you understood that i was talking about, this whole time

in fact i was bragging about your talent today at the kumoricon programming meeting!

O.o; Wow!

 You were bragging about me at a meeting?

 *air punch* Alright then! I'll bring me some doll making equipment! I'll find a good stury case and prepare some things I'll need to show and my patterns. My patterns were paper, traced after each attempt, using trial and error technique and put onto cardboard if it worked. So yar, my patterns on the backs of cereal boxes ^^;

 And I'll bring some cut-out felt pieces to show, and some already sewn and ready to turn inside pieces! I do a torso and neck, legs, and arms pattern-style. I'll bring some in between a doll job, and then a bit more done, and a nearly done doll and show the way I did it. I'll make it the same character, and maybe even finish each "in-between the actual finish" doll and give it to a random watchers!

 *looks over writing* I've never sewed infront of an audience, intending to teach them. ^^; Will that work okay?

 If not, I'll suggest/ask some other ways, because if you are telling others there's going to be a workshop for doll making by me, I'll do my best to do so! I'll find a way to get to the convention! Even if, I don't finish my pikachu on time, I can still go to the convention without a costume right? ^^; This'll be my first convention ever... I probably will be able to, but I just want to make sure.

ALSO...

 I'm really excited about making things to other people - it's always given me a great feeling that even after so many hours, knowing that it'll make someone smile/be happy, makes me feel so great. ^^; *sharing funny-ish feelings with you all* I've made a kirby dollie, he needs feet still, but I'm hoping to make about 5 kirby dolls and sell them too! I want to set up a table with a bunch of little things people will hopefully like and want to buy!

 So, that's why, I'm going to try out some clay making! I've found a recipe for self-hardening clay! It's more like a dough that dries out when left at room-temperature, air dries! I first found a recipe for salt dough, but the stuff takes HOURS to bake in a domestic oven - what is a domestic oven anyways? I have a stove/oven at home here, a standard oven, I think it is. I didn't know there were other types of ovens besides pizza ones... XD

 Anyways, the self-hardening dough I'll start on tomorrow, and I hope to make little figurines of video game characters and anime! Will it be a hit, do you think?

 These are real official figurines, and I'd like to use them as reference and try to copy them but not completely. Is that okay? Will I be sued or something, or can I use the same sort of idea and have to change it a bit? I've never done any clay work, but with crafts, I take on new things fairly easy.

 Also, I bought small magnets yesterday - any good ideas on using them? If I'm really ambitious, would making two obvious/fangirl couples, and selling them as a set, with their hands holding hands by use of magnets, be a good idea? I've been thinking of so many different ideas, but I wonder if I'll have time to all of them. ^^;

 What do you guys thing?

When I was 8 I used that to make a model of Speed Racer's MOCK FIVE. In the fullness of time and the misty haze of memory I can still see it now as a PERFECT copy of the car from the TV show.  I left it on the picnic table in eh back yard to dry (I was not allowed to use the oven) and it disappeared.  I know Eddie Rip Off took it he never admitted it but we fixed him with a brick to the head 2 weeks later.

sounds perfect, you are going to be a wonderful workshop hostess i'm certain! yay!

i'm going to give you a highlighted spot :)

well you'll have your choice of spots. but i'm going to personally make sure it's at a time i have no other responsibilities so i can learn from you!

feel free to have 2 slots, or a 2hour slot, if you want to incorporate projects with clay and/or magnets.

the obvious choice would be to make clay figures small enough that a magnet would hold it to a fridge!

and yes definitely also get an artists'
 alley table, these should all sell like pocky!

perhaps you and our kitty-girl friend could chat between now and the con and the two of you could even perhaps cohost the session, with her doing the demo part of the workshop and then you and her both assisting folks to try to make their own dollies?

i *believe* i could probably even get a modest budget towards this

This sounds like a good idea because I was speaking with Michelle the girl who ran the Cat ears workshop and she does not want to run it herself but would be happy to get the things together for a workstation.  Maybe we could do an Arts & Craft station with dolls and Cat ears!

Ahh, so much offered support and help-ready people! Thank you, Jazzy-Chan! Maybe you could help host the workshop! I'd love to get to know you better and maybe we can work out an idea! I'm always full of ideas, and your fabric would be a great help! I usually work in felt, as it's easier because I don't have to hem, but the problem is the dark color fibres often bleed onto lighter colors. And right now, I'm storaging the complete ones in individual bags so they don't shed color fibres ^^;

 But any fabric is great! Say, Jazzy-Chan, do you sew much? Could you give me any tips on hemming? Making the job easier? ^^; I'm so used to felt now...

And...

Alright... To finish this 16-inch Agatsuma Soubi doll from the Anime Loveless took... 3 days! 4 in reality, but I worked on it for 3 days, skipped yesterday for some reason ^^;

 He's got his calve-length, dark purple with black fur edge coat. And his tight blue jeans and his blue high-heeled shoes. His green shirt that I couldn't tell was a long sleeve, t-shirt or muscle shirt, so I made a t-shirt, but you can't really see it anyways... ^^;

 I have his belt, the bandages around his neck. His face is painted, took 3 attempts to get it right, and glasses as well. His hair is in strands rather than a big chunk cut in the shape of his hair.

 I think I really did a great job with this one! It's my first big doll! Usually, I make the little ones the size of the Fruits Basket characters, which are 8 inches.

 I think the price for the detailed Soubi should be $20 - and that's pushing it, I think. Is that too much, do you think?

REFERENCE Pics

 - This is so you all can see what the doll is supposed to look like. The coat is darker in the series. For Reference, I watched episode 1 and 12, which really only had the outfit. Soubi changed outfits lots as did everyone else ^^;

 So ya! I'm really hoping I can do Dominique Cross from the Bouncer

Robin Sena from Witch Hunter Robin

And finally, Yami Yugi from Yugioh

 If get 2 dolls done out of the 5, I'd be extremely happy! I hope I can do it!

i know basic sewing i've made the costumes my brothers and i wear for kumoricon, i tend to pick up a bit learning wise just by working at joannes , with other fabrics that frey, i'd think alternitve to sewing with those tiny cut, like useing stich witchery or testing out frey check on differnt fabric types but yeah it would be awesome to co host a pannel for kumoricon.

^^ Oh, good idea, Jazzy-Chan! I recently found out, helpful for tiny doll clothes, that using clear nail polish could fix up those hems nicely! I could just do that when it's inside out, coat or whatever, and then turn it right way and ta-daa! No mess, hopefully! I must try it out! ^^

 I've been working on duplicating things rather than making more dolls (_ _) So much for my goal of 4 dolls a week... I  must give Ayame Sohma a head, Hatsuharu as well, and Kisa needs clothes and a head. And I'm planning to do Shigure and that's it for Fruits Basket.

 Edward Elric is up next! And maybe a "16-incher" this week!

 But here is some pictures of my Papou fruits!

And my Tama-Chan! <333333333333

And 5 Kirby dollys complete!

 Alright, the black lines on the shell were painted on, it took some time XD Anyways, does it look alright to you guys? I was thinking, $4-5 dolls a Tama-Chan, I think I'll make 4 more.

 $4 a little Kirby dolly!

 $4-5 for a Papou Fruit!

 Does that sound reasonable?

 Oh, and a bonus! XD

  - How would that look on a Artist Alley table? ^^ *happy*

Alright, who would buy the following?

 An anime chest set? - What my idea is, is to make little chess size figures from my self-hardening dough mixture, because large projects just didn't work ^^;

 The only question is, what anime to aim for? I was thinking, maybe Inyasha, with Inuyasha as white king and Kagome as the white queen. Naraku or Sesshoumaru as the black king because then Rin could be the queen. XD

Other than that, I don't know who should fall as what as game pieces... Any ideas? Or another anime that you think will be good for a chess set? I'll probably by an already-made chessboard from a thrift shop and paint it and anime-fy it. ^^

 And also, some new ideas I'm cooking up! Bee bears from Kyou Kara Maou - about 5 of each.

 Backpacks - it'll mostly be for decoration rather than a backpack, really, but still, it'll have a zipper and everything! I'll post a picture of it soon!

 And other than that, nothing else new! I hope all of you are well!

Oh, check out this chess game some creative soul made! XD It's sooo cute!

 Also, an anime quilt? A certain anime show with character faces and such on it? Would a small quilt big enough to cover a tummy, be sell-worthy you think? XD

If you come to the convention, sure! I'll reserve one for you, and anyone else, I have lots of time before the convention, so if you want to reserve a something, let me know! Sorry, but reserving is only for little mascot things like papou fruits and kirbies and tama-chans, and the zillion other little things I have in mind to make. No reserving for dolls, I don't think because it takes alot of work to complete one.

Well, if you want to reserve a doll, I'd say, $2 extra for the time it takes. I was planning on only making one doll of each. Although, for the Gundam Wing Boys I'm going to make really soon, I'll do two of each because they're so well known and probably so cute I'd want to see a bunch of them!

Oh, and if you PM with a special request for a doll or something else, I'll look at it and consider (probably say yes) XD... If you just give me the name, series it's from, and a reference picture, I'll do my best if I do it (which I probably will) XD

 Note, that reserving and requesting can be cut off anytime - I'd like to get at least 50 dolls before September, and the request and reserved won't fall under that 50 doll goal of mine ^^; So there we go!

^^ Or if you give me your mailing addy, and somehow pay me, I'll send it to, W-Chan!

 Make me an offer!

XD Maybe we can make flowers in a basket, Leashy-Chan! Little flower bunches in a basket, and make it an Aeris Special! Any Aeris's could come and buy flower baskets to complete their costume! XD

 I just thought of that for some reason just now. Right, simple - we should brainstorm sometime!

 ^^ I thought of flower selling because I had a picture in my mind of you with a basket, selling papou fruits to people.

 Oh, W-Chan, so, I'll see the Papou's for $4 - Official Price, and then it'll be $6 because it's a reserved one. So there you go!

 The Gundam chibi Duo didn't work out so great. XD I could get a good head on him, I kept painting faces too big for the head so I chopped of the head I did and now I'm doing a tiny Edward Elric. I think I may do 5 mini Edwards and 5 palm size, Tohru-size XD

 I'll post the picture of Edward tonight!
