Title: Shaping Up Cosplayers' Hikes (Next wlak/hike: Feb 20th! maybe at Hoyt Arboretum)
Post by: Roddy Manic on September 14, 2009, 11:13:35 am
S.U.C.H. is a idea I had that might be fun. I know I always want to be in shape to fit in a cosplay I want to do for the con but always end up delaying it. Putting off the exercise, thinking "I still have time" but then it's the end of august again and there is no time left. For 2010 I really want to do a cosplay and thought, if I start now I can do it! But it has been a week since the con ended and I have not even touched the gym once. I relisted though that I did walk a lot when I was at the store with my son this week, school stuff shopping. And I was like, THAT'S IT! Walking with people always makes it so much easier, makes the walk go by faster.

So, here I am with S.U.C.H., a wonderful plan. hehe, okay, that was lame. ^^; What is the plan? it will be a group of people going to the con next year who all want to shape up some for it. I figured the best thing would be to go hiking or walking at nature parks. Where the group can talk about the latest manga they have read, or a game they want to share. Just have fun and enjoy each other’s company while walking off some unwanted pounds, and encouraging each other on the shaping up goals. Maybe have a healthy picnic snack sometimes too. (loves picnics.)

I was thinking of maybe trying to have it at least once a month. Maybe the same nature park every time, or each time a different one. The group can change, so if you can make it one month and not the next you well still be welcomed. And new people will be welcomed to join at any time.

Would anyone be interested in this? Have any ideas to add?

If it isn't in Vancouver, I'd probably have to find a ride though. ;3
Hiking is pretty fun if you're with friends~!

This is great. ^^ I'm getting excited. I live in beaverton, OR. But drive and con also give people a ride. So I guess first step is figuring out where people live and how far they are willing to go. Second is a park, I have a book about hiking that has a lot of parks listed on short hike routes for them. I can have any day off as long as I have 2 weeks notice to ask for it off. So what times is best for everyone is a quetion too.

Where Am I: Beaverton, near the thriftway at 185th and Farmington (you can give a crossroad near you, mine given is within 5 minute drive. Or furthy or closer or just the city, whatever you are comfortable with.)
Time: Anything with 2 weeks notice
How Far: I guess no more then a 60 minute drive. (you can add here if you'll need a ride too. like, "anywhere on the max line unless I have a ride then anywhere 45 minutes away" something like that.)

Weekends are the only time that work for me. I don't have vacation xD When I do get my vacation I'm saving it up for a family vacation or a roadtrip next year. x3;

I live in Salem but am willing to drive to the Portland/Beaverton area. I'm also willing (if people pitch in for gas) to take up to 4 people from the Salem/Keizer/Dallas/Independence area with me if they don't want to drive but want to go.

I live in the tigard area and I'm willing to take trimet as far as posibul. If any farther than trimet can go, I would need a ride.

I'm at the Portland/Happy Valley border, by the freeway's Johnson Creek exit. I can get anywhere that the Max/bus line will take me, maybe... I don't have infinite bus passes anymore until the C-TEC program (for poor and underpriviledged working students) works out it's budget troubles so I'll need to scrounge up change. Unless I get a ride from someone.

I live in SE Portland, I'm not sure if I'll be able to join in with the hiking cause I've honestly never left Portland so I wouldn't know where to go. lol

What would be awesome is if we can start a chain or something within different regions of Oregon. That way for those who can't reach Beaverton can come to Portland or something. Just an idea. ^_^;;;

This sounds pretty cool! (I never get around to exercizing either XD) I'll go if it's at a time when I'm free.
Title: Re: Shaping Up for the Con Hikes
Post by: Roddy Manic on September 15, 2009, 03:21:26 am
Only flaw with that is if it doesn't get big enogh. walking with like 3 people you feel you have to keep up where if there is 5 or more, then you are more likely to find someone who walks the pace you do. I am more then willing to give rides if we go somewhere too far from beaverton.

Also, I was thinking maybe Oct 17th for our site hike.

Okay, I figure the schedual out and added it to the first post. It is always a Saturday. I figured December and August are bad times any time the mouth so no walk those months.

OMFG where have you been this whole time we've had http://www.kumoricon.org/forums/index.php?topic=10113.0 ???
Oh well, so this is possibly going to be one of the shape up groups huh?  Sounds good to me, I'm free anytime, and can bike anywhere within 10-20 miles, any further and I'd be too tired to walk and would need a ride hehe.  I'm more in it for the getting out of the house and talking to people who enjoy all this site covers.

So I'm just throwing this out there, but if we are going to do this we should get organized!  List of things we should have somewhere (not necessarily on the forum) for easier get to get togethers. Making our own web site is always an option.

List:
Car pools, who can, what area they will be able to pick up, and who needs.

Are we doing regional (full state) get get togethers?  If so different people can set up different groups and events.

How far you can travel? (carpool if not?)

Availability time/dates people have open (mostly just for starting out so we can make better decision what day of weeks work best)

Who our members are?  Make a list!

Lastly I wouldn't cross off dec, aug completely, people are all different on when they like doing things.
As for the other shape up link,  This could easily turn into multiple groups for different things, one for walks others for exercising in general.  Its up to everyone here, what do you all think? ^.^

I'm excited! The 17th of October works great for me! :D

Camname: I agree with make a huge list of things like what you listed. Even if we didn't make our own website our own little forum to discuss and update information about the walks an other such stuff.

I look forward to this!

Alright, our first one's going to be the 50 mile hike at Black Butte. *busts out scout uniform, boots and trail mix* Oh wait, even I never got to go on that one.

But yeah a hike through a state park should work as a start. I don't have a bike, but I can walk. A good start for the people in Portland is to maybe walk up and down Waterfront Park a couple times.
Title: Re: Shaping Up for the Con Hikes
Post by: camname21 on September 15, 2009, 04:36:15 pm
I would agree, for the first walk start off smaller.  Make it more of a meet and greet with a nice view and walk.  While the waterfront is a nice view, I don't know if that's much of a walk.  What do you think Roddy Manic?
Title: Re: Shaping Up for the Con Hikes
Post by: Roddy Manic on September 15, 2009, 05:37:09 pm
Yeah, A short one for the first would be good. Where it ends someone with picnic tables maybe so we can meet and great before the walk and have a healthy picnic/snack. I am looking for the book now.

After today's ankle explosion I'm agreeing that starting off small sounds like a good idea. I'm hoping these walks will actually help strengthen my ankle right now.

xD I don't even think I could do a 50 mile hike... I died doing a 7 mile hike ;-; Granted it was up a steel rocky hill
Title: Re: Shaping Up for the Con Hikes
Post by: camname21 on September 15, 2009, 08:17:50 pm
LOL 50 mile hikes are weekend (if not full week) hikes, with full hiking backpacks.  I do not see that happening with this group unless there are other outdoor lovers here like myself (who are not totally out of shape, when is the last time you traveled even 10miles on foot?).

I like the idea of having our first walk where there is a nice place to sit or eat light before or after.  Most any place have picnic tables somewhere, so that doesn't limit us at all.
Title: Re: Shaping Up for the Con Hikes

lol Never. xD though the seven mile hike was at the begining of August.
Title: Re: Shaping Up for the Con Hikes
Post by: camname21 on September 15, 2009, 08:35:00 pm
I may bike 20+ miles in a day, but the most I ever actually hiked in one consecutive "trip" was probably 15miles without a long rest of a day or so.  So 50 miles is like wtf even to me. :D  BOY SCOUTS 4 LIFE!! *dreams of meriwether*

The 17th is good for me. I live in SE Portland and can get anywhere the MAX goes, need ride after that. Don't have a bike, can bring some healthy snacks for about 5 people. Just need to know when and where. I definetly want this excersise group to go on as long as possible because it would be a great motivator for me.

When I lived in Colorado for three years, I use to backpack all the time. Sadly, it's been so long since I have I am not sure how well I would be at backpacking now. Maybe we can have that be are final goal for the last hike before the con. ^^; Or not.

Okay, update, I have not found my hiking book yet. Found my backpacking one and will look in it to see if there is anywhere that has dayhikes too. But going to look a few more places before I give up. and if I have no luck finding it or some place in my other book, I can always just buy a new one tomorrow.

We could do something like the Waterfront or the Japanese gardens to start out. There is also another garden next to the Japanese one don't remember what its called though. I don't know how to drive there but it is easy to get to by MAX, and it would be good for people who can't go to far out of portland.

I have a fairly complete mental map of about 30 different parks and trails throughout the Portland area that we could use.  I'll definitely be attending these any time I'm able to.

I suggest the following hikes (or bikes):
Terwilliger - Downtown to Hilsdale (there's a Thai Restaurant in Hilsdale called City Thai which I would recommend as a post-hike eatery.  Excellent food; excellent price)
Mt Tabor Park - Base to Summit
Springwater Trail - Reed College to Downtown (I recommend this as a bike trail; might not be very good for hiking)
Multnomah Falls - any trail would be great during the summer

And there are plenty of others.

Yeah that reminds me I am near Mt. Tabor.
Title: Re: Shaping Up for the Con Hikes

I have to bike 10miles or more to get anywhere in portland as it is, I should just make a bike group that goes and chills at the parks and has lunches together before heading back home.  Problem is I'm to lazy to make a schedule with events and keep it running :D

Mt. Tabor isn't even a Mountain :(
Title: Re: Shaping Up for the Con Hikes
Post by: Roddy Manic on September 17, 2009, 10:33:37 am
Flaw with the Japanese garden is it cost to go in.

Mount Tabor Park is in my book, and seems like a good one. the loop it maps is a 2.8 mile hike. Approximate time is and hout to and hour and a half. And we can always edit it to make it shorter, which looks rather easy to do. it's no fees and is open 4am to midnigt, so no rush to when we go.

This is the Route (http://www.mapquest.com/maps?1c=Aloha&1s=OR&1a=17475+Sw+Farmington+Rd&1z=97007&2c=Portland&2s=OR&2pn=Mount+Tabor+Park#a/maps/l::17475+SW+Farmington+Rd:Aloha:OR:97007-3212:US:45.479909:-122.857238:address:Washington+County:1/l:Mt+Tabor+Park:6350+Se+Yamhill+St:Portland:OR:97215:US:45.51514:-122.59897:address::1/m::9:45.506961:-122.728107:0:::::1:1:1::/io:1:::::f:EN:M:/e) I would take, so I can pick anyone, up to 4 people (forgot my back holds 3), that is on the way or can get to a max station that is on the way. (the max el.. Elmonica? the one near 170th is the closest to me.)

If this works then:
Who is in? So I know who many snacks to pack in the picnic.
What foods (healthy ones of course.) do you like?
What time should we go?

I'm totally in for this! Sounds and looks like fun! Closer to the date though I'll need an exact address of the meeting point so I can put it into my gps xD Else I'll never be able to show up *gets lost easily*.

For heatlthy snacks: I like most fruit, nuts, and some granola bars.

I'm open for times, I live in Salem so it takes me about an hour to get to Portland.

Also! I was being silly and realised: If you live in the Salem/Dallas/Independence/Keizer area and want to go I can take up to FOUR people with me... I'll extend it to Woodburn as well unless there is some who lives in Silverton that REALLY wants to go but has no way of going (I live in West Salem so Silverton is further away from me than the on ramp for I-5 Northbound is. lol)

If you want a ride from me either send me a message here or you can send me a text 5038510399. Just know that I work 8-5 monday through friday so I don't respond until after work.

Ooh, I'm totally up for this on the weekends I have time.  I live in NW downtown Portland and could also carpool (room for 3 people).  However I'd only be up for hikes relatively close in.  I live a block away from Macleay park so we should do that sometime!  :D

You can count me in for the first meeting if it is close in to portland!  Sounds like fun!

I can bring some delicious fruit.  I work in a produce department so it's easy.  :)

No, I like skating, or at least rollerblading, but I'm cheep and don't want to pay for being asked to slow down. (or if I'll clean up my bloody knees before going back on the ice >.<  But no.. speed control is no fun, and I don't think they let you screw around ether.)

I feel fine but still have a odd voice and sniffles.  I want to act like when it was warm, though its getting colder and colder by the day seemingly, but I know too well that pushing yourself too early leaves you vulnerable for something else to sneak in and cut you down while your guard is down.  Its so annoying.

Yeah. I had a bad cold not long ago. After the 2 day I gave in and took Tylenol cold, first time taking anything other than just Excedrin in 7 years. but it was gone 2 days after that. so only lasted 4 days. But for a girl who is pretty much never sick, it was hell. And the days after are the best time for something to attack again. I suggest vitamins.... At least Vitamin C, like the halls defense. It helps.

Oh, and a bit ahead here. but maybe have the 02/20/10 bday walk at the new place in beaverton, or the one off Millikin Way, the Tualatin Hills Nature Park?

This is getting really close now. So I would like to now if anyone needs a ride. I can pick up in beaverton, or near on my way out. up to 4 people because I won't have my son on this walk/hike.

Just a heads up here though. Last time I said I would pick someone up I waited 13 minutes longer then I said I would and they never showed and I still have not got a pm to say why. I was almost late for the event. So I will no longer wait that long. And I would LOVE to get a cell number if we are meeting somewhere other then a house.

I will have a nice time! We're going on a drive with the car club he is in. It's been a while since I've been on one of those as well.

I hope you guys also have a good time! Don't forget to take coats or something! Last I checked it was supposed to be a wet week(end)

Well there is a parking lot next to the restrooms about halfway up the Mount, that would probably be the best place to meet up.  I was planning on being there around 2:30PM.  Do we have any idea about how many are coming, I think a few of us were going to plan snacks?  Also if anyone needs a ride from the east side of Portland you can PM me.

I can give ya a ride, you are super close.

parking lot next to the restrooms about halfway up the Mount sounds like a good meeting point, if that's good for everyone. And I know I am bringing Pear and Peaches cup.

And yeah, I won't be in cosplay either. don't really expect it at the hikes. maybe when this gets more orginized and what not we can have SUCH none hike meet ups where we can cosplay.. in indoor places... ^^: but for now dress warm and jackets... and umbrellas maybe.  ^^;;

Sense I've been biking everywhere and its now getting colder and wet, I've got to figure out what to wear on a bike while raining >.<  This whole car thing boggles my mind, they say your completely enclosed from the elements and they have these portable heater thingies.  OH OH and I hear you just sit there and the thing moves on its own....  Anyways, must figure this out so I can still get places w/o grabbing rides :(  Hopefully any good bike clothing I find is cheap enough to maintain my self reliant transit.  Yall should get your bikes out some day and do a bike ride with me hehe.

I did see a rain cover for a bike helmet where I got my bike tuned up at.  You also want to have fenders so you don't get a mud stripe up your back going trough puddles.

Alright so yay on the first "hike" completed.  Hope everyone who came had a nice time. Ya, we didn't really hike because of the rain, but it was still worth going out.  I'm looking forward to the next hike, and maybe we should wear better clothing for being wet, girls?  Then we can ignore the water and do a full hike.  Was nice to see some of the faces on the board, did everyone else have a good time?

Always bring rain gear, even if its an umbrella or a poncho, an umbrella is not the best option because you need to hold it up the WHOLE time.  You might think of wearing a decent pair of hiking boots, but regular tenies should be fine.  Snacks and water would be the only thing left I can suggest.  Make sure everyone has those things, or at least the rain gear for our hikes!

yay photo

Hehe... Okay. Got it... the password is cap sensative and I forgot to caps one of the letters. ^^;;;;

AND! the site is now Ad Free! ^^

I also figured out how to get my pics, and the two I took are up there now too. And I changed the site banner image. Objection! ^^ I will remember to bring both a camera and my Flip digi camcorder next time. Nee! It was fun, wet but fun! And next time more walking, even if it rains! Ponchos are like $1 at the dollar tree so if I get RSVPs for the next maybe I can supply one for everyone, like start a SUCH pack I always keep in my trunk to bring on every trip.

hm.. And not to that topic. The next one. Where? near portland, closer to aloha/beaverton or Tigard... or... road trip to even further? (if that, I can bring up to 4 people since I won't have my son.) Also, what time works for everyone? How long do you want it? I think 30 pre hike/walk to talk and eat, then hour walk, then 30 close up? maybe?
Title: Re: Shaping Up Cosplayers' Hikes thread (first hike Oct 17th at Mount Tabor Park)
Post by: camname21 on October 19, 2009, 02:38:46 am
Lol, no walk and we went over that time limit already..   But ya that seems like a nice time for something close, if its farther away we should think about a longer stay.  If people have the time it would be dumb to drive an hour some where and only be there for an hour of walking and half hour at the end for a talk (the first 30 would be people gathering and late ones I'd think)  Ideas... um, I'll get back to ya on that one. :)  Most things off the top of my head are too hard for the average person or take to long/far away.
Title: Re: Shaping Up Cosplayers' Hikes thread (first hike Oct 17th at Mount Tabor Park)
Post by: Roddy Manic on October 19, 2009, 05:28:11 pm
Yeah. until this is bigger, staying to simple hikes/walks is a good idea. We would love more people and having it all "4 hour hike up hills and rocks." would probably make people go... I can't join, I can't do that. ^^;;; but, once the group gets bigger and people get more use to the walk/hikes, then we can do more and more.

Also, as the group gets bigger maybe we can pull funds in sometimes to do something funds related.... not sure what this group would need other then ponchos and maybe the website getting upgraded if it gets big enough to need it. Or help with the $5 a month I am paying now for it. Oh, maybe gas cost too for when we get to the lvl of going further away and have a car bringing many people or 2 cars.

It's only $5 a month. SUCH isn't a big thing so it don't need a lot of.. um.. bandwidth or storage. I use the template webbuilder, since the last time I used HTML or any other thing was 10 years ago I forgot all I use to know about website building so templateness is a big help.

So far we decided anouther short like hour walk/hike.. with real walking this time even if rain comes. ^^; and... nothing else I think. I think my bigest worry is where. I don't mind bringing people. so if it's in portland again I can pick up beaverton folk and on the way folk.

Hoyt Arboretum actually looks very promising.

"This route travels through the spectacular 187-acre tree museum of Hoyt Arboretum in Southwest Portland. The path winds through a variety of forested ecosystems including oak woodland, redwoods, ponderosa pine forest and an amazing grove of bamboo."

it has shuttles, so I am guessing they come from the zoo... oh, found this
"A place of beauty and  serenity in all seasons,  the Arboretum is easily accessible from anywhere in the metropolitan area, by car, bus or the MAX light rail.   You will also find parking, restroom facilities, ADA accessible trails and ADA parking at or near the Visitor Center.  Admission is free."

So yes, the next one will be at Hoyt Arboretum.

Other then my Zatsune xmas outfit one, which is NO WAY hike ok, even in good wether, the skirt is just too short even with the bloomers under it. ^^;; And hikes in oregon, even when walking them, can get muddy and mud and cosplay outfit normally do not mix well. ^^; but... I guess it also might depend on the cosplay. But I don't think anyone will be at this next one.

Hoyt Arboretum will be a fun hike, and I promise, come rain or shine we will walk.

Also, weather says "Chance of showers. Highs in the mid 40s and lows in the low 40s." So dress warm and bring rain gear. ^^ I will try and rememebr to get some ponchos at the dollar store.

The will be a meeting too as to plans I have fot SUCH, changes I like to make.

Also is there a cell I could contact to find the group in case I'm late or calling to say I'm not coming?

Okay, so looking it all over. There is a parking spot at Kingston DR and Knights blvd, that's where we will meet. It's close to the Zoo's parking and to where the max drops you off underground to get to the Zoo.

sad news. My son won't be with use, ends up he is doing a Cubs Scouts thing with his granpa.  But we'll still have fun. and have this to talk about, and walking, and food and fun.

Scout events come in from time to time. Like tree selling and stuff.

I'll see what I can do about getting my decorating party done as fast as I can and jumping down to catch you guys. otherwise I'll be going to RHPS later that night.

Much as I love hanging out with Roddy, you guys all should have been there! It was a fairly nice day (no rain), and we had lots of fun getting lost on the lovely trails. ;D

Sorry about that, I didn't get up until I gave tracey a call at 1:05pm.  And it was an awesome looking day too...  I'm disappointed with myself I didn't get my butt up to come.  At least two people came so no one was like, "wtf, I came out here for nothing!"  When I talked to tracey she seemed a little upset because that's just what seemed was about to happen :(  Yay for Anamink saving her from such a fate.

Are you really going to cancel the other meetings until march, tracey?  While that sucks at least there will be your club to get some more chances to hang out with ya before then.  If everyone didn't live so far from each other I'd suggest a multi day/weekly exercise meet up, that focuses on a real workout.  Sadly Too few of the cosplayers on here seem disciplined enough for such meetings, myself included unless there was a cute catgirl coming :D

Oh tracey, didn't you say you were going to trick-or-treat as some future space catgirl?  If you did, do you have a pic, me wants to see the costume ^.^  Myself, I was a wizard for hallows eve.

I woke up at 2 PM.

+ I missed the non k-con event that I didn't want to go to.

- I missed coming to this event.

The rain didn't open up until tonight, and apparently some roads were a little too wet, so my ride couldn't take me to Rocky Horror either. TT_TT

I'm focused enough for workout meetings and would love to be led by a catgirl in them, nya.
I'm partly thinking of upgrading my red ninja to Red Neko Ninja. I just need make some red ears.

I don't know about the "cute" part, but I have the tail, ears, and collar down for catgirl xD

But really, even though it was nice yesterday, that weather isn't likely to last for very long. And I hate walking in the snow. So... I think waiting until March will be a good idea. As long as you guys show up to CLUB!

Dates are now updated.

I would like this to be a bit more hike and less park in time. But to start with we will have are April and May meet ups in the same place as the last. It is in a nice location, and easy to get to both via driving and the Max.

SUCH Is starting up again! Yes, earlier then I though but weather seems to be nicer sooner this year. So, Our first walk/hike will be Feb 21st.

Any ideas on place or time please post.

I was thinking Hoyt Arboretum again, it is easy to get to. and we had a fun hike there. and it's pretty.

Also, carpooling, I can pick people up near me. If you can pick anyone up too please post saying how far off route you can pick them up.

again, easy to get to with bus and max. right next to the zoo.
