Title: Halloween Costume Party ~ 10/31 [Eugene/Springfield] *CHECK FIRST POST*
Post by: Fuyuko on September 21, 2010, 04:06:15 pm
I'm not sure if this plan is going to fall through or not. This is just an idea that I wouldn't mind being put into motion depending on how many people will be able to attend. That, and it's freakin HALLOWEEN! I mean, really. What better reason is there? 8D

So, I was thinking we could all meetup sometime during the early evening, either in cosplay or traditional Halloween costume, and go trick or treating in various neighborhoods together. My neighborhood is a hot spot for trick or treating and there's also a playground conveniently located closeby; so we can get away with plenty of shenanigans there~
We could also do something before that, like go to a haunted corn maze or haunted house. I was even thinking of throwing a party somewhere in there but that's a little iffy since my house is under a bit of construction and there could be limited space to play around in.

Now, the one concern I have is how late this is going to last. Some people who may be attending might live hours away; so I wouldn't want to inconvenience them by having to travel all the way back home late at night when they're tired. This is why I'm a little questionable about this whole plan; so that's why I'm merely putting this down as a big MAYBE.

SO, anyone intruigued? :'3

Actual Plan: After much thought and discussion, we have settled on turning this into a Costume Party that will be held in Springfield at Radien’s place (because he is awesome enough to be willing to host it).

So, what will happen is we will meet at Radien’s at about 4PM and start the festivities with music, snacks, games, Anime and non-Anime viewing, and of course having fun and socializing with each other.

[Note1: If some of you are planning on taking the bus to Springfield Station, Radien will be able to pick you up there. Just exchange contact numbers so that he’ll know when you arrive there.] He won't have the car that evening.

[Note2: If there are those who would be willing to provide snacks of any sort, it would be greatly appreciated. <3]

When it gets dark enough, we will go out Trick or Treating to other houses, specifically of those local otakus who can’t make it to the party. [If I’m talking about you, let us know so that we can drop by and say hi. :3] Radien (and maybe Wuntvor) will be driving some of us around as we go house hunting~

After that, we go to either the Haunted corn maze (http://www.themaize.com/sites.php?ID=&username=oreugene) [at Lone Pine Farms in Junction City, $6 (adult) $4 (minor) entrance fee]
OR Hysteria City (http://www.hysteriacity.com/) ($15 fee, no costumes allowed… which is stupid!) if some of us feel like it or can afford to go or not.
So, we can go to either the one furthest away that’s cheaper, or the one that’s really close that’s more expensive. We can take a vote.
This will most likely not happen.

Finally, after it gets late and things start to DIE down *shot*, the party will end for those who have to leave or continue for those night owls HOO are able to stay. *double shot*

Have fun! I might dress up, but I will probably be doing something in my garden for the Samhain, & there is something (not fun, finance-related) I have to do overnight.

I would, but I have a feeling I'll be handing out candy to hoodlums that night. Besides, I'm getting a bit old to trick-or-treat.

@Rem: Oh how nice! Not the latter with the finance bit but celebrating Samhain. Those Celtic holidays are so neat. :3

@Saki: ;3; Oh right... I wonder if I can think of an alternative plan but I dunno atm. >3<

@Lt: Aw, but it's fun to play at a slightly older age~ You feel like a kid again which is such a wonderful feeling. Meh, that's just me. But handing out candy is a nice tradition too. The hoodlums would appreciate it. ^_^

@Pots: Hehe, you should consider trying it again! I was about 18 the last time I trickie treated and had so much funnn~ x3

I remember it from a while ago but we haven't talked about it recently so I figured we weren't ~

INSTEAD OF TRICK OR TREATING CAN WE HAVE A COSTUNE PARTY PLEASE?
Title: Re: Trick or Treat Meet? [Location: Eugene]
Post by: Fuyuko on September 26, 2010, 11:53:52 pm
HRRRMMGRAH, if only my house wasn't so... crammed; then I'd totally throw a costume party. >3<

But yeah, Ageha, you and your group should totally come to whatever this is going to be! 8D

I just wish I had magical weather predicting powers so I can see what the weather will be like on Halloween. Then we can see if we'll be able to go to the corn maze (if we wanted to).

Oh and Saki, I haven't talked to my mom yet but I will... soon. Sorry for making you wait. >_<

It's alright ^^ We still have another month untill this happens, i don't mind waiting.

Also, I have a good feeling that it won't rain...Because i've been through 14 Halloweens and not once did that day have rain ^w^

Ah, ok then. x3

So so, I've been thinking about this whole plan and I really want to know what would be most convenient for everyone. Cuz anything that would work for you will most likely work for me (unless we're talking the house party plan which I should probably consult with my mom about to see whether it's really doable or not); so go ahead and mention anything that's on your guys' minds concerning the time, type of meetup place, and any other activities that you might want to do on All Hallows' Eve~

Well...i'm not sure about the area around Eugene(because i've only been there once xD), but i wouldn't mind going to a haunted house for one of the activities owo

Unless he is canceling that week for some reason, Wuntvor's Anime Friday on the 29th is another place for Halloween-themed cosplay and treats that weekend. He has an amazingly huge collection of new fansubs from Japan I've never heard of, and takes requests.

I am totally interested in doing something on Halloween, but I am indifferent about trick-or-treating. As an adult I am daily faced with the challenge of resisting the urge to eat the Halloween candy before Halloween comes, and we tend to give out my favorite types of candy, so I am less interested in what other people are offering. :3

Besides which, emasik is talking about coming and visiting that weekend, so it'd be fun to have something more social than walking around.  I'm with Oslapedo; I vote for a costume party.  Don't worry about where it'll be hosted just yet.  We have plenty of possibilities.  I could even host it, if there's warning.  I'll have to deal with a clean-freak mother, but we have plenty of room to host.

Alternate Trick-or-Treat suggestion:

Instead of going around to random houses, why don't we find out who from K-con and/or the forums is going to be home on Halloween, then take a car around and visit their houses specifically?  It'd be more fun than bugging strangers in my opinion. ^_^

Also, I have a good feeling that it won't rain...Because i've been through 14 Halloweens and not once did that day have rain ^w^

Yeah, I've been through quite a few more Halloweens and I only remember one or two rainy nights, at most.

Also Saki, are you only counting the years you trick-or-treated?  I started when I was 5 or 6, I think... I just remember I was Peter Pan. (and I'm still cosplaying as green characters...) >///>

...giggling at Radien's last line...
Until I was a teen, my parents had on the fridge a pic of me in my first Halloween costume: As a bunny, age 4, in my pink "footie pajamas" with a cotton-ball tail.

Then when I was in our high school variety show, my friends & I covered the original Saturday Night Live (1975 or 6) sketch, "Slumber Party" (8-year-old girls discussing the various rumors they had of where babies came from), & I wore pink footie pj's.

I still have a bunny costume....but it does not involve pjs.

If there's a costume party, I'll likely go, but a mobile entourage, probably not.

Acutally, i've been dressing up for halloween my entire life ^^;  But i remember as far away as age 4 and i don't recall it raining that year and up untill last year...so...i remember about 10 Halloweens that it hasn't rained ^^

I can see why they saved it! That sounds really cute. Did you paint on whiskers and a bunny nose?  That would probably get you more candy. ;)

I haven't seen that particular skit but I bet I'd like it. The old Saturday Night Live sketches have a pretty good reputation.

And yes, I should mention that my second Halloween costume was Robin Hood, so seeing me choose Link as a cosplay is no big surprise......

Even as early as 1? ;) Haha.

But yeah, I remember similar. The fact that I remember one or two rainy nights might have to do with a difference in age. >.>; Perhaps.

No face makeup. Guess my smile sufficed :) I remember the candy lasting until New Year's Eve!

I have on vinyl the first "Not Ready For Prime-Time Players" album (recorded live from SNL). Still love it.

My college pal is in a comedy duo now that is famous enough that Garrett Morris performed with them!

@Radien: I'm so glad to hear that there are other places besides mine for hosting a party! Thanks so much for offering your place as a possibility!!
Also, that's a great idea for an alternative trick or treat plan! If any of us still wanted to go trick or treating, we may be able to do that and maybe have the party afterwards or before (whatever works out). :3

So~ From the looks of it, the costume party is seeming more ideal to some of you; But how about other activities such as going to a haunted house or corn maze, etc? Or should we just stick with the party alone?

Speaking of activities, I found this pretty amazing event going on in Springfield called Hysteria City (http://www.hysteriacity.com/) which is basically a building/"indoor city" containing FOUR haunted houses, vendors and performers. Not sure if we'll be able to fit that in with the plan but I think it's worth mentioning. 8D

@Radien: I'm so glad to hear that there are other places besides mine for hosting a party! Thanks so much for offering your place as a possibility!!

Sure no problem. :) We have a parlor/living room and a second story in addition to the dining room which can be used entirely for entertaining.  Each has a medium-sized TV and enough space to relax with 6-8 people (more if they can sit on the floor/hearth, stand, or squish between people on the couch).

Also have a Wii and a PS2, plus older game consoles.

Also, that's a great idea for an alternative trick or treat plan! If any of us still wanted to go trick or treating, we may be able to do that and maybe have the party afterwards or before (whatever works out). :3

This may go without saying, but I'm all for it. :) Also, I can drive, but only if we have a solid itinerary (don't want to be all confused after dark).

So~ From the looks of it, the costume party is seeming more ideal to some of you; But how about other activities such as going to a haunted house or corn maze, etc? Or should we just stick with the party alone?

I like haunted houses/corn mazes, but I was a little jaded by the last "haunted house" I went to. It wasn't haunted at all.  More like a house of bloody alien zombies and fake poop. And it smelled funny. >.>; But that was up in Portland, so I'm hoping Eugene still puts a little "haunted" in its houses and corn mazes.

Hysteria City looks promising.  As long as it isn't extremely loud or smelly and doesn't make constant use of strobe lights, I'm up for it. :) (Loud noises and strobe effects can make me disoriented and dizzy) ...And if it's bad enough I'll just wait outside, no complaints.

EDIT:  I'm trying to find out beforehand whether Hysteria City makes constant use of strobes.  There's no mention of it in their Q&A.  I want to call or email them, but I can't find an email address or phone number on the website. I will continue to look into it within the next week, but if anyone knows anything, I'd appreciate info.

Worst case scenario, however, I'd ask about it on-site and potentially wait outside with anyone else who has issues.

(I really, really hate Halloween strobes, and now more than ever because I have a medical condition that I didn't have last year...)

What kind of hours are we talking about?
General cosplay or any specific theme?

Yeah, there aren't too many good haunted houses.  But then, I'm not really into thrill-seeking, so even if they're effective, I don't enjoy it much.

I think Link would be more appropriate for Halloween. At least people recognize the costume.

Where I live?  Okay, I guess I need to post that publicly at some point.  I'll just post it here and edit it in a few days to remove it (paranoia about search engines).  If you don't get it, just PM me.  But please write it down now if you can.

2417 Ranch Dr
Springfield, OR 97477

Also: I often run into the problem that people consider this "far away." To anyone who says that: seriously, guys.  It's 15-20 minutes tops from anywhere in Eugene, and 5-10 from anywhere in Springfield.  And the only place from which it's 20+ minutes is the outskirts of Eugene.  Try driving around Portland sometime and you'll realize how short a drive that is.

It IS, however, inconvenient to get to by bus.  So if you need to take the bus, just look up how to get to Springfield station and don't worry about the rest of the trip.  I'd be happy to pick you up there and drop you off afterward, if you just figure out the schedule.

Okay, I'm still assuming we're going for Halloween night, but I wanted to throw this out there:

If anyone REALLY wants to, Saturday the 30th, the night before, is also an option.  But that would mean no trick-or-treating.  Oh, and I might as well mention: we live in a safe area for trick-or-treating if people really want to go around on foot.  I could be a "guide."

Well now i'm confused :-\ I guess i don't care what the plans are as long it's on Halloween (i hate to sound like a b*tch about that, but still want to go Trick-or-treating and i'm not a fan of celebrating Hollidays before the acutal Holliday(like, i never open Christmas presents on Christmas eve or have a Birthday party a few days before my actual birthday)) =w=;; sorry...

Radien: I invited Jeni & Taco (who were at my birthday party with us), & they are interested :) They will be there at Terry's with me tomorrow; hope you & others in the thread will join us!
I am thinking I will wear my new Columbia costume (thanks to Vampire_Kameko!). I had planned to save it for New Year's Eve at MEW, but I probably won't make it to MEW until Sunday, January 2nd, & also, for KC, I cosplayed Rachel from Glee, & for Halloween, Glee is doing a Rocky Horror episode! How sweet is that!!

Anyone have any very short red or orange wigs they no longer wear or would be willing to share?

Rem:

The 30th is only intended as an option if everybody says "hey, that's better for me, I'd really prefer it."  If not the 31st is fine for me.

I understand you're not a fan of it, but you'll find that for Halloween in particular, unless they don't have kids, adults have to celebrate it early, because on Halloween they're stuck either handing out candy or taking their kids out trick-or-treating.

I don't have kids, but I find that most of the adult costume parties I go to are held the weekend before Halloween.  This is common for Halloween in particular because it often occurs in the middle of the week, since the holiday is not set on a specific day of the week.

So, sorry, I don't think you're being a "b*tch," but understand that costume parties for adults are rare and we often have to be flexible in order to attend one. This is frustrating for adults who like costumes, and it's better to celebrate early than not at all.

Rem:

That's awesome. Amanda did Colombia at K-Con 2009 so I know what she looks like. I looked up pictures anyway so I could check her hair.  I have a red wig that might work, but Colombia often slicks her hair back, 1920s style.  I'll see if I can bring it tomorrow.

Raaaahh, too many ideas! It's hard to come up with a single solitary plan. Quit thinking of so many! I'm looking at you, Radien... >A> (lolz, I kid. Keep 'em coming, people!)

Personally, I'd rather have the event on Halloween just for the sake of celebrating the holiday on its proper day but it's really up to the majority of you guys. :3
As for the activities, I'm down with the costume party and I believe most of you are as well; And I think we can somehow fit trick or treating in there...
I tried researching visitable haunted houses in the area but only came across Hysteria City, hence why I brought it up.

I'm sorrryyyyy.... ;A;  I try to be helpful by offering people options. This makes me not a very good "leader." But I can lead out of necessity, so if you want something more definite, how about this:

* We meet at my place at about 6:00 and have a snacky sort of potluck. Perhaps order pizza beforehand and just bring a few things to go along with that.  At some point I'll go to  the Springfield bus station and pick up anybody who is taking the bus.  All the while, we hang out and watch DVDs (I have some new anime box sets unless someone has a good suggestions for something else), eat, and play board games, card games, video games.

* Once it's fully dark, we spend an hour trick-or-treating. Perhaps drive to a house or two if we can find some otaku friends to visit.

* After that, we go to Hysteria City if people want to.  I expect by this time it'll be 9 or 10pm, so we'd move on sometime after 11pm.

* Lastly, we go back to my house and continue with games and food and socializing (and eating candy) until people want to go home.  I'll drive the bus-riding people back to the station when they need to go.  We can go until at least midnight if people are still enjoying themselves, if not later.

Does this sound like a good collection of everything everybody wanted to do, and enough time to do it?...

@Radien: No no, you're cool! I was just getting a little overexcited over all of these awesome ideas; wanting to do them all, as well as thinking of what would be best for everyone. I'm glad there is at least someone here who is more straightforward in planning than I. Sorry about that. xD;

As for that... amazingly mapped out plan, *in awe* I totally think we should go with it! It has a bit of everything that we want to do; so that's one vote from me! My one and only concern is for those coming from afar, and by that I mean like an hour or so away from the Eugene/Springfield area... cuz I wouldn't want anyone to go home too late. ><

That sounds wonderful, but we might want to do games/party/potluck during the day and start it in the early afternoon if i'm going to be able to do this ;w;

I will most likely attend the festivities.  I am a bit old for trick or treating, but I can escort those who want to, and I can also provide another source of transportation for anyone who needs a ride.

I am not sure what I will wear for a costume this year.  My cosplay takes a lot of preparation. I do have a Next Gen StarFleet uniform I could wear....  I've lost enough weight I think I can fit in it again, maybe.  I can always just wear my Mithril uniform from FMP.

I have an idea for something else fun we may all want to partake of.  Anime themed pumpkin carving!  Those of you who know me, know that I do an anime themed pumpkin every year.  I enter them in the contest on Anime News Network (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/contest/2009-10-23/annual-halloween-pumpkin-carving).  I have even won some prizes.  Who is up for carving some anime themed pumpkins and having a pumpkin carving contest of our own?  I haven't really thought about what the prize for winning would be, any suggestions?  That is, of course, if we do it at all.  I am also open to suggestions for this years pumpkin.   ;D

I can also bring along anime to watch if you want to.  I am planning to have a Halloween themed Anime Friday, the Friday before Halloween.  I have all of the DeathNote live action movies, as well as many horror based anime.  Blood+, Elfen Lied, Hellsing Ultimate, etc.  If Radien has a TV that I can plug a HDMI into, we can watch pretty much anything, or I can bring some of my DVD's.  I also wouldn't mind playing Munchkin.  Radien, you have Munchkin Bites don't you?  I don't remember for sure.   :-\

That actually sounds like a better idea. If we're going to have pizza, then we might as well start at 4 or so. I'd like to officially adopt your suggestion. :) Or did you want it even earlier? Are you busy later in the evening?

Anime-themed pumpkin carving sounds great, but can we do it earlier this month instead?  Carving pumpkins ON Halloween seems a waste since everybody puts their decorations up well before Halloween. Perhaps you meant to imply that.

I rarely bother to carve a pumpkin, but it would be so much more worthwhile if we made a mini-party out of it.  I'd be up for it.  And I know a bit about pumpkin carving techniques and knife safety, too.

As for the party, sure, bring your favorite DVDs and the group can pick.  I am indifferent about whether or not we watch spooky shows.  I just want them to be good -- the details are secondary.  Not a big fan of horror, though.

Unfortunately, we don't have a digital TV or anything HDMI capable. :-\

I have regular Munchkin, Munchkin: Fairy Dust, and Munchkin: Waiting for Santa, but the base set has been misplaced.  I am looking for it.  No, I don't have Munchkin Bites, but I DO like it.  I would own it if I had infinite money.  :)

Also, I want to put up the specific details on the first post of this thread so that others will be able to get an idea of what's going on here.

4 sounds okay to me anyway~ I have some stuff to do earlier in the day, so we probably wouldn't get there right then, since it'll probably be getting over around 4-ish. XD

@Saki: D: I was going to suggest taking the train but then I found out that you'd need an adult to accompany you... I really can't think of any other method besides someone driving you down here. Sorry. ;A;

I'm totally fine with the starting time being at 4 as well. I was about to suggest between 3 and 4 but here it is; so yay. :3

Sure, sure, it can officially be my place.  I am totally ready to host; I just wanted to make sure everybody's okay with it. :)

You can post my info, but if we're going to put up my address info in the first post, could we do it in the form of an unmarked link to Google Maps? Like this...

Radien's place: http://goo.gl/maps/p25S

Just trying to avoid bots and search engines.

And just to reiterate: I can host about 8-10 people easily.  If we have more than 4, I encourage that we split into two groups: one to play board games (downstairs) and one to watch DVDs (upstairs). Migration between groups is fine. :)  We can go until, say, midnight or so.

If we want a large group activity to accommodate everyone at once, we could also play something like Clue: Master Detective or Mafia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafia_%28game%29). Both of those are large-group mystery games that would be great for Halloween. And there's always Apples to Apples, for that matter.

I recently acquired three DVD box sets. They are: Martian Successor Nadesico, Steel Angel Kurumi, and To Heart.  They are available if people want to watch anime.  Non-anime movies and such are also perfectly fine. We have a good movie selection, or you can bring your suggested titles if you have any. Feel free to bring games as well (particularly board and card games).

Heh, it'd be fun to play the Betrayal at the House on the Hill board game for Halloween, but I don't own it...

If you guys are still doing that trick-or-treat bit with people that can't make it to the actual party, you guys can always swing by my place. I'll have plenty of candy and hardly anyone ever comes by. Unfortunately I can't go to any parties 'cause I've got class the next morning at 9.

@Radien: Awesome. Thanks again for doing this!! : D
And sure, I'll use that link to put on the post. Good thinking there.

@Lt: Well, we're planning on starting early so that some of us can still have plenty of time to have fun while leaving at a decent hour. We haven't officially decided yet but we're leaning towards whatever time people start leaving which could be at any time.
But yeah, I have a morning class the next day too. I wish Halloween was on a Saturday instead. That would make things way easier. ><;;

We might even do it with people at the party.  If you want hoodlums at your door, please give one of us your address, or ask someone who already has it to bring it to the party, okay? :) (You can do it privately if you want.) Whereabouts do you live, btw? (roughly)

...Althooough it looks like Fuyuko has independent plans. But we'll be in the same place at the start of the party, so either way, whoever wants to visit will probably get the chance.

Fuyuko:

Indeed, Saturday is always the best night for Halloween for all parties (in both senses of the word). Sunday is a lot better than Mon-Thurs, but still the least desirable day of the weekend.

Say, anyone have thoughts on Mafia?  I find myself really wanting to go with the idea and set up a game.  I think it'd be great with our group.  If you don't know what it is, let me know and I'll explain (or skim the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafia_%28game%29) I linked to above; this site (http://org.ntnu.no/mafia/) is also good and a shorter read).  We can also call it "Werewolf" if that's better for Halloween (exact same game, different theme).

Meh, I'm flexible with the plans; so anyone can add on or subtract from them. I'm just adding extra stuff to see where it goes from there and how they will work out for others. :3

And yeah, even on a school night, I'm up for late night fun... I'm responsible, just not on certain levels. =w=;;

I'm literally 'bout three or four blocks south and two east of Amazon Park, where we met up last time. I'm about a block from the post office. 33rd street? 's why I could ride my bike to and from the park.

That's not too far, is it? I'd even join you guys from my stop onward if I'm not gone too late.

More added suggestions? Have we switched places? ;)

I'm fine, though. As long as we have enough potential activities to fill the night, everything will fall into place.

It's not too far for me, and I might be the one driving.  I commuted to the U of O practically every  day for 3 years, and had three play rehearsals a week at Amazon Park last summer. Driving there is no problem for me.

I have an update.  Unfortunately, I will no longer have a working vehicle come the 31st.  If anyone really wants a ride from the Springfield station, let me know ahead of time and I will see if someone else in the house will make a run down there, but I'm not planning on arranging it unless I get specific requests in advance.

Incidentally, I think a good backup plan for DVD-watching would be Mystery Science Theater 3000. Everybody familiar with that?

I would, however, like to have an idea of how many people will be here, so if possible, please respond to your RSVP if we sent you one! And let me know if you want to bring a guest or two (if you haven't already).

Yeah, please go ahead! I just want to work out an attendance estimate sometime before the party. :) I'm hoping for 6-12 people.

Oh btw, Radien, I unloaded all of my Halloween decor and I found quite a few nifty ones that I could bring along if it'll be alright? These include lights, a giant spider and even a fog machine! *usually hosts Halloween parties* I can get to your place early and help set up everything. Will that be ok?

And Genki, will Fox be cosing Austria since you'll be Hungary? That way I can put her down on the list as that. x3

I spent years being the DD for pals (still randomly get calls in the middle of the night from pals too drunk to even walk home). One of the reasons I chose to get into cons was being tired of social scenes in which intoxication was the point of the gathering.

Thanks for passing the word on.  Just had a note or two as I'm hosting. :)

I can handle a goodly number of people, but please RSVP just the same so I know what I'm getting into.  If you're on Facebook, and got an invite, please respond to it there if possible.  Posting here is just fine, too.  A map to my place is in this thread's first post.

Now, I noticed that the haunted house idea was crossed out with a note "this probably won't happen." Did I miss something?  I mean, I'm not particularly set on the haunted house idea, but if you guys want to do it, I'm totally fine with it.

Yes, I have bakeware and, of course, an oven!  Feel free to bring stuff to bake or heat up, but of course it'd be nice to know what it involves beforehand. :)

Also, we are probably going to order Papa Murphy's pizzas, so the oven will be in use for about 20 minutes at a time for each pizza, early in the evening.

Any other questions or ideas?...

@Raiden
Well, conserning the haunted house. I remember a few posts back that a couple of people were talking about the fact that there might be strobe lights, which would be a bad thing because a lot of people can get headaches or even seizures from them.
Also, Me and Fuyuko were talking about it, and we both probably wouldn't go in the hanuted house anyway. See, i get scared really easily and we don't want to go in there and end up having a heart attack...so, yeah, thr haunted house is pretty much out of the question for me (also the fact that i don't have $15 to get in).
So all i'm guessing is that we don't want to chose to go to a haunted house and have a third/half of the people not being able to go, and that's why it's marked off.

@Radien: Yeah, I apologize changing that without telling (concerning the haunted house trip). I just thought it over and assumed it would be easier for people not worry over having money for the entrance fee, as well as getting easily freaked out (me being one of them). Again, sorry. ><
Oh, and I have a little wondering, and I'll just quote from my previous post:
Quote
Oh btw, I unloaded all of my Halloween decor and I found quite a few nifty ones that I could bring along if it'll be alright? These include lights, a giant spider and even a fog machine! *usually hosts Halloween parties* I can get to your place early and help set up everything. Will that be ok?

Okay you two, that sounds fine if you think there isn't enough interest to consider it. :) I don't have any special interest in it either, but I didn't want to be a stick in the mud to anybody who might want to go.  I was probably the first one concerned about strobe lights because of my experience last year, but that was in Portland. I don't know if any of the local horror houses are like what I saw there.

Anyway, I'm hoping we'll have enough to keep people entertained at the house. I even have at least two particular games that can accommodate 10 or even 12 players, if it gets to that point, and my family's house is big enough to hold a good number of people. :)

EDIT:

I missed this part of your post, Fuyuko, since it was in quotes. Sorry, I guess I was skimming too fast.

Oh btw, I unloaded all of my Halloween decor and I found quite a few nifty ones that I could bring along if it'll be alright? These include lights, a giant spider and even a fog machine! *usually hosts Halloween parties* I can get to your place early and help set up everything. Will that be ok?

We have some Halloween decorations, though not all of them are up yet. We don't usually go all-out, though, so feel welcome to bring some of your favorite stuff. :)  The giant spider and the fog machine in particular are things we don't have. Well... I'll have to clear the fog machine first, but it sounds cool.

(I bought a blacklight on sale after Halloween last year, but it broke... T.T)

Feel free to show up a little early, but I doubt we'll need more than 10-15 minutes. Could you call me before you leave? I'm not sure whether I posted my phone number anywhere. I will do so.

I'm not really going out of my way to make this party as spooky as most hosts do, though. This is because Halloween is the only costumed holiday of the year that everybody celebrates, and as a cosplayer and long-time costume-lover, none of my costumes are spooky!  I figured many cosplayers could say something similar. :)

If fog is outside, cool. If inside, I can't be in that same room, while it's on, but otherwise, ok.

It could be placed right in the entryway or next to the door? The fog does get pretty thick even though it's not too harsh to inhale. It'll be a cool effect to even place it outside where everyone walks in. :3

Okay, I got a green light to use the fog machine on the front porch. :) We can run an extension cord from around the corner if necessary.  Hope that won't bother anybody.

Err... hehe... I didn't mean a literal green light, sorry. ^_^; I meant that I got it okay'ed with my family.

I think it's a good idea to keep it outside, anyway.  I once worked the Lone Pines haunted corn maze, where they used a fog machine, and that fake fog smells kinda funny.

Outside = great. Colored light bulbs are actually available various places and would add an eerie effect, if there were a way to shine a lamp inside the fog machine (if that is not a fire hazard).

I am also open to suggestions for this years pumpkin.   ;D

Here is my pumpkin for this year:

Now THAT is one scary pumpkin!   ;D

I didn't see anyone else wanting to enter a pumpkin this year.  Anime themed pumpkins are so fun too!

I'll see you all at the party tomorrow!

I will be bringing my laptop.  Is there any anime people want to watch?  I have just about everything, but my laptop can't hold it all.   :)

I've prepared a big ol' pile of DVDs and games for the party, and I'm working on having Mafia ready.  I also have multiple board/party games that can accommodate 7+ people.  I think we will be quite well-occupied.

I have a blacklight i could bring which would give the fog sort of a creepy dark purple look. The light gets kind of hot though, so we would want to keep it away from anything flamable.

Unless the fake fog is flammable, that should be easy to accommodate!  Black lights are cool; please bring it!  I had one but it broke...

Well, i just found my CD of 'scary' halloween background sounds from a Halloween party i had a few years ago. If there's a CD player, should i bring it?

Yes, please do!! Bring any CDs you like! We can play them in the board game room.

Pizzas don't take forever to bake!  If you bring something that is also quick to bake, I'm sure we can accommodate it!  But it'd be best if it didn't require too much preparation in the kitchen, that's all.

I'm really looking forward to it too! :)

Oh, I also forgot to mention we will have apple cider available. I'm gonna see if it's possible to have some special ingredients too.

Now, about pumpkins and pizza...

I'm sorry I didn't think to mention this before, but if anybody else has any clever pumpkins they have carved, feel free to bring them. If you're a-feared of toting them in the car, though, no worries. Totally optional.

emasik was here today and we actually carved pumpkins together! XD emasik carved an "awesome face" pumpkin, and I carved a Link. I'm hoping we'll have them up either beside the door or inside, just behind the screen door, so you'll know you've got the right house. :3  If you don't see any pumpkins, look for a bunch of small metal candle-lanterns shaped like witch hats, hanging from metal stakes. We'll be setting those up beside our porch.

Neither will be visible from the street, though, so look for a two-story brown house with brick. We're the only two-story house on the block.

See you all there (or rather, here)!  Oh, and also, if you need to show up late, don't worry about it!  But please keep in mind that we'll be ordering pizzas sometime between 5:30 or 6:30, and I'd very much appreciate knowing exactly how many people are to be fed (and what they can/can't eat). Otherwise it'll be whatever snacks you see on page 1 of this thread.

If you are coming, and want my phone number, please PM me either here or on Facebook!

Unfortunately I have never roasted seeds, so no.  But I do know that pumpkin seeds are tasty.  (And according to the Legend of Zelda video games, they also make good slingshot ammunition. Did you know Link is a pumpkin smasher? For shaaaame.)

I totally understand about the paid work. Jobs are curiously rare finds, spoken of only in myths and legends, and rumor has it that if you catch one you can force it to give you a pot of gold. I am unsure whether this is true.

@Fuyuko
Please don't be sorry, i had no idea that would happen. Me and my parents are guessing that the fog, along with the nerds i ate (because sometimes i can get a scratchy throat from nerds) and the fact that i didn't have anything to drink after all of this happened. It pretty much started out with a really sore throat and then my stomach started hurting at about 3 this morning. Then at about 6 this morning i started throwing up. Also, the main reason i started throwing up blood was because my nose was bleeding and apparantly i had a buch of mucus in my windpipe that got scratched up from the nerds i ate, so after swallowing a bunch of that wile i was sleeping, i got sick from it.

Derp de Derp. I had a good time; it was nice meeting/seeing all of you lovely people. Unfortunately I'm not local, so I probably won't see anybody for quite a while. Sadness.  Also, has anyone posted pictures? I'd like to show my associates what I was up to last night.

Feel better, Saki. <3

Always glad to see you.  Happy you made the trip. <3

Say, did anybody get any good photos of the pumpkins?...  I would be particularly interested in lit-up photos taken in the dark, since my Link pumpkin was made to look best with a candle in it.

I'm sorry to report that our two jack-o-lanterns have already started to mold. :( I think maybe some spores found their way to our pumpkins thanks to the large number of other pumpkins in close proximity (similar things happen with bananas and other fruits).  I'm leaving for the weekend so I took a couple of photos and will have to put them in the trash before I go. Ahh, the transience of pumpkins....

If anybody is interested, I would be happy to schedule a Cosplay Game Night with the games we never got around to, among other things. It could be with or without costumes, however you please.

As long as it's after Orycon, I'd go, and I'd cosplay or at least come Loli. However, I would reserve the right to just hang out and watch if the game had content or process with which I felt uncomfortable. I am very squeamish about competition. If it ever doesn't feel friendly I simply leave. I couldn't handle being in the room when certain people played Monopoly and double-crossed each other and got edgy about. Come to think of it, that included the person who just screwed me over on my rent and about $400 altogether in real life. I should've taken how he played the game as a red flag and never let him move in with me, my cat and my fishie (may she rest in peace).

@Radien: It was probably the machine that gave off the odd smell because I took a good wiff out of the bottle *reckless* and smelled nothing, nor did it affect me in any way afterwards. I actually researched the ingredients for the fluid and found like, nothing; so that's odd if it gave off that smell (I smelled it while it was running as well). '_'

But anyway, I'll definitely remember not to bring it again... I'm still perplexed because I was totally not expecting an outcome like this. I had a party last year where I used the fog machine inside the house and no one had a reaction to it. The room was thickly covered with fog too...  I'll quit analyzing this time, promise! Maybe if I write about this research in my journal that'll make me happy. xD; *nerd*

I didn't feel anything at Radien's, but at home, my neighbor's fog machine made me feel queasy & short of breath and made it hard to see.

@Fuyuko
Well i looked it up as well and what i found was that it had some chemicals in it that can cause a skin reaction with some people (weather it be in fog form or not). So it was probably just me.

@Radien
Well actually i wasn't feeling sick at all until i was driving home with my parents, which is why i got kind of frightened. But then my neighbor told me that people can get sick from things hours or even days after being exsposed to whatever is making the person sick, so that's why i didn't get a quick reaction (i'm kind of glad too, i didn't want to be sick during the party).

Ahhh, the "Monopoly trick."  I have heard about that. I suppose it was a bit foreboding that your former housemate used it...

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, when I say "Monopoly" I DON'T mean the game of Monopoly.  There is a card in Settlers of Catan called "Monopoly" that can be used in a very underhanded manner, which usually ticks off the entire table.

Rem, if you want, we could outlaw the Monopoly trick. Besides, after having played a few games with them, I strongly doubt this bunch would get that competitive. :) But if you want to just watch at first, that's fine too.

Also, I'd love to see one of those Loli dresses you keep mentioning!

That is indeed mysterious. If it isn't the liquid, it may just be some sort of small exhaust or something. Hmmmm. :/

Don't feel too bad about it!  You were relying on past information that suggested it would be fine, and heck, we didn't even bring it in the house, for that matter.  I'm surprised too.  Now we know not to use it around Rem, so at least we can avoid it in the future. :)

@ Radien, actually I was going to add a bunch of crinoline under my pink Loli for sock hop cosplay if you had gotten back to me in time for the Grease sing-a-long. You saw the ladybug one when we went out w/Meg & John. Let me know when you start going to Terry's again & I'll bust one out for the occasion. Any excuse to dress up works for me!

Sorry I didn't get back to you in time.  I think the solution here is to find better excuses to dress up, though!  Halloween is over, but there's gotta be something else...

If nothing else, December is an excuse to do Santa Link.

Well I'm definitely cosplaying for Deathly Hallows. At least once.
I'll see if I can find anything that would work to cosplay Tron.
A pal of mine is having (I am not making this up) a pub crawl for which folks are supposed to dress as a favorite food, and/or a favorite food-item-advertising-icon.
I, of course, would aspire to try to find a way to cosplay the celery lapel pin on the 5th Doctor's lapel.

Celery lapel pin? Man, that's obscure. But you'd still look like celery regardless(?)

Tron? That'd be pretty awesome.  If you think they'd allow it, you might want to look into buying a big pack of those glow-bracelets and linking them together.  There were some Tron cosplayers at Sakura Con, if I recall correctly, so you might want to look them up.  They glowed in the dark.

Hmmm, a Tron costume would certainly be fun to throw together, though I'm not dedicated enough to ever go for full accuracy on anything like that.....

Accuracy, schmaccuracy. (This is not directed at you, Steve.) I do not cosplay for anyone else (unless I'm in a skit with people or something). I do it because it's fun for me. If others want to judge that I don't have the time, money, or sewing skills I do, that's their loss *shrug*. I've been cosplaying since way before I had heard the word. I was dressing in character to go to movies and plays since at least junior high (and choreographed the Time Warp for the 6th grade talent show). It's not that I begrudge people who have the time and energy and money and resources and especially the sewing, tailoring, corset-boning, etc. skills; I totally admire them, especially those who make their own items on a budget. The part I ignore is when there is condescension like "I historically researched my costume and you wore what's in your closet, therefore I am good and you are bad" kind of mentality. Especially because often what it comes down to is economic class. It is not easy to budget for accuracy if you are counting pennies to pay your rent. I applaud anyone who makes any effort to enjoy enhancing their experience of any moment through wardrobe, prop, singing, fanficcing, whatever works for them, and no one, no one has the right to try to take that enjoyment away from them by saying it's not good enough to meet their standards (except of course if one willingly enters a contest knowing said contest has set rules).

Wow, you've certainly thought this one over.

I guess you have a point.  I put a lot of effort into accuracy for my Link cosplay, but that's because I really wanted to do justice to the character design. I wasn't necessarily wanting to appease snooty cosplayers or be snooty myself -- I gravitate towards people who cosplay the same character, rather than glare at them like they came to the prom wearing the same dress.

But I guess what it comes down to is that if I can't do something well because it's too complicated, I try to do something easier instead.  I don't like settling for "hey, they'll figure out who you're supposed to be."

That's why I re-wear my costumes a lot... I can't afford to have something impressive every year (or every con).

Your Link is adorable and well-accoutred. You pointed out something important there: You *like* when others do what you do. You're not trying to outdo them or be the only one to do it.

Yes. I hadn't originally realized that this attitude isn't widely held.

Back when I first cosplayed Ashton Anchors, a few times I got people saying to me "I saw someone else cosplaying Ashton, but his wasn't quite as good as yours."

My response was "I don't care! Show me to this person!" ...because Ashton cosplayers were rare enough that I just wanted to meet anybody else who was of the same mind, regardless of the quality of the costume. Some were mediocre, some were fantastic, but it was all good.

Anyway, about the original topic of the thread...

Thanks again to everybody who came to the party. This was the first Halloween party I've ever held or been to where EVERY SINGLE GUEST WAS IN COSTUME OMG.  I really appreciate that.  It's a level of enthusiasm that I rarely encounter on Halloween.  The people I previously spent Halloween with would make fun of me if I wore a costume.... ANY costume.  Partying with cosplayers was a welcome change. ;)
