What finishes a cosplay better than their signature prop?!
Is there a prop you're dying to make but don't know where to start? Have you hit a rough spot and need help? Want to know the best place to get supplies? Or have you made a prop you want to show off?
Well this is the place for just that!
Here you can post pictures of you props that you've made, working on and tutorials. This is also a place where you can get help and tips of how to make your own props.
I will update this post with tutorials and links to helpful tips.

Nice! I love props and am looking forward to seeing the things people are working on.
As for me, my main prop this year is a Gatling gun-arm for Barret Wallace. I had made it two years ago, but still had to modify it to make it fit properly this year.
So, here's a picture of my Kumoricon 2011 "partner". ^_^

Looking awesome! I saw it when you first had it and it was really well done. Glad it's even better!
I have two props I'm working on for Kumo: Riku's keyblade "Way to Dawn", and Gaara's gourd.
Started the keyblade, just carved the basic shape and sketched out details.
-
Well, I didn't make a prop, but I do have one! I'm just not sure if it's legal considering it's an airsoft gun D:
I used one a few cons back and all they did was peace tie it- have the rules changed at all? It would be such a bummer not to be able to use it!
Thanks!
-
The gun's nozzle has to be plugged up so it can't be used at all.
-
well i can't start on my aqua's brightcrest or my haruhi sword just yet >3> cuz i have to wait till i move BUT i know my wayfinders are almost done and once they get here i can start on the keyblade :3
-
My current props the keyblade is for my sister's cosplay, the cross punisher and the vash revolver are mine. I'm just too proud of the keyblade. It's my first prop ever.

I usually avoid props because I don't have much space in my tiny little apartment to work on them and roommates don't take to kindly to syrofoam shavings all over the place.
Still, for Sakuracon last year I went after one of my dream designs, Miku from the art for STOMP THE ENEMY. It was more doable in my space because I used cuts from sheets of plastic to make a geometric, boxy kind of shape, as opposed to anything that would require actual sculpting and sanding and so on. Plus I got to use my Physics 211/212 knowledge to get some lights in it!
I'm really proud of it but it's pretty uncomfortable to wear since it's heavy on my nose and I since it's all enclosed I can't see anything with it on.
Here it is:
(https://www.kumoricon.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffc03.deviantart.net%2Ffs70%2Fi%2F2011%2F161%2F6%2F7%2Fstomp_the_enemy_by_jianna_otn-d3il2te.jpg&hash=a49d97432771afc8e00701af3d03b09eead09fac)
And one where you can see the colors a bit better (my lights were too bright for the camera in the dark, apparently)

Looks really nice, Jianna. You'd have a hard time convincing me that wasn't professionally made. Looks so clean and even. And lovely light/color effects.
-
@ Jianna Love that song! And it looks really cool! The colors really pop, and I love how it's all glossy! @__@

@jianna: *drools* me wantz! ;A;

Looking good!
Here are the two other pieces for my Barret cosplay. His waist-guard, which is finished, and his wrist-cuff, which I still have to weather.

Ok so here is the prop line up for this year...bear in mind these are the first 3 props I've ever made. Critiques for improvement are welcome.

Grr, I still need to work on/get started on/get help with my Shizuo Heiwajima street sign... Heck, I also need to get some kind of a weapon for Luxord! Maaaaaaaaan, and me with "the arts and crafts skills of a dead sheep..."
-
I am starting on my bass for Haruko. I am so freaking excited to get this done and see the finished product. Right now my friend that is good at cutting wood is out of town so I have the pattern drawn on the wood and when he gets back I can start on the base and neck. I also found a guitar store close to my house that sells lots of parts so I can get the knobs and the bridge there since the bridge on her bass is so intricate and I don't think I could make it to the standard I want. But the plan when I am done will be that this will be the best looking prop I have made to date. I'll post pictures as I have progress, right now it isn't much >_>;

Zuko's swords from Avatar: the Last Airbender. These are the first props I made; I learned a lot and am looking forward to making more! C:
They are made of bass wood and a lot of miscellaneous stuff I had lying around.
-
Those swords look great.

So, for my Fem!Heavy, i have to get a sasha (here : http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=§ion=&q=heavy+sasha#/d1kq704)
But I have NO IDEA how to make it lol Any ideas?
-
you can use cardboard, an empty carton of milk or something similar (like a bleach container), PVC pipes (those plastic plumbing pipes) paint, some metal parts if you want, like screws and such. it shouldn't be too hard :)
-
Lol that means itll be overly difficult. Trust me, my skills are not in building

That looks like it would be fun to make. Home Depot would have everything you needed. Would also require some cutting tools and drills.
Take a picture with you and go to the PVC pipe aisle. The last time I was there to make a gun barrel for my cross punisher one of the employees there made some really good suggestions so they are not unaccustomed to helping prop makers. The guy didn't even blink when I told him what I was doing.
-
Oh thank you. I think ill try that. Im not good at building, my skills are in clay and painting. My boyfriend may just get sasha and ill have a sandvich or the chocolate bar as my weapon.

For Luxord, all you really need are cards :/ maybe get a deck of em and have them in your pockets?

Oh, I already do that. In fact, this year, I was thinking of making custom backs for them (you know, so the backs look like the backs of the cards in the game). But that's so small, and I kind of want a weapon that I could swing like a bat, in a way... I was thinking about ordering a custom boffer stick from that booth that was selling them that will have a playing card motif.
-
For luxord you could make some giant cards. As I recall he swings some big ones around when you fight him. you could even make two sets of 3 attached together to make them kind of like a fan.
-
I could, but those things are kinda bulky to carry around, you know? I was thinking about trying to set myself apart a little.
-
Well Luxord's joke weapon is CD's
-
You could make some clay kunais and paint them to look like cards

Kunais are more on Larxene's style for weaponry.
I think if you got poster board you could make cards...
Or if you wanted them smaller, I would use cardstock paper to draw the design. If you have a printer/copier, you could make one actual template and just run it through the copier.

Hmm, not a bad idea... And it works better too, since, like I mentioned, the larger versions would be a little too bulky.

This will be my first year making a prop! I'm making the Little Sister's ADAM Harvesting Tool!
I'm mostly going to be following Volpin Prop's tutorial but I'm definitely going to be making some modifications.
http://volpinprops.blogspot.com/2009/02/bioshock-little-sister-adam-syringe.html
edit: I'm not doing a Little Sister cosplay anymore :/ But I will be making Rose's kitting needle wands!
