I am a Christian and an anime fan.

If you look carefully, I suppose you could see that in Pocky Club...

Heh heh, I don't know what would be worse for the club. People seeing us as a thinly veiled attempt to take over the convention or a thinly veiled missionary outreach group.

My family was raised Mormon and while half of us don't goto church anymore, the other half still does. My brother was sitting in line and he noticed another con-goer was wearing a ring on his finger.. a CHOOSE THE RIGHT ring. Except it was in Japanese or something. So then they used their rings to combine their righteous powers and uh.. well, no, that didn't happen. But it was pretty cool, I thought.

It honestly makes me sad to know that there are people out there who arent christian. I'm a true devoted christian. Its hard for me to grasp the fact that people I love may one day go to hell. Like my bestfriend and a man i loved who died this last january. I never had the chance to teach him but he said he was sorta into it. I'm disappointed in myself.
Title: o.o Is anybody a Christian anime fan, by any chance?

It's not my intention to get into a religious debate, but I think there's a misconception that anyone that isn't Christian is doing it just because they want to be bad or something. Or that they "choose" not to believe.

Personally, I believe there's something out there. Something that created us, perhaps. But I've looked at all the major religions and instead of enlightenment, I find disappointment. No religion fits what I view is "right" and "just". If I take a religion and change it to fit my views, do I really even believe in that religion anymore?

That's why I don't follow any religion, per se. I try to be kind and respectful to others. If God exists and he condemns me to Hell because I was kind to people but had a hard time "accepting" Jesus as my "savior".. well.. what kind of God is that?

(I happen to think Jesus was a pretty awesome guy. Whether or not he existed or whether or not he's the Savior is up for debate. I just happen to think he was a nice guy. Always helping out the poor. Who'd he hang out with? The self-righteous? The hypocrites? No, he hung out with probably the kinds of people that most Christians would lock up in a minute. And instead of stoning them, he tried to teach them.)

I'm a practicing Mormon, but those who actually hung out with me at the con know I certainly don't have a stick up my bum or the usual misconceptions. I am Mormon, but I'm also myself. And myself likes to play with fire and airsoft guns and occassionally be obnoxious and make silly (read: sometimes obscene) remarks.   A

nd I believe that as long as the person is a good person, they should believe what they want.

I love anime too. Just some (basically all) of the nude scenes I could do without because...well besides religious beliefs, the male anatomy isn't very pretty and I don't want to oggle other women. XD I'm a VERY straight woman, thank you very much!

yes, i am christian!!!! and i have had this great idea forever: to make a christian anime. i told a few of my friends this and they absolutly loved it. they told more friends and they are interested too. so, i have a team already! *hehe* but if any of you are interested in that, just let me know!

you see, some of the things that japaneese people put in anime..........well..........i don't quite think is cool.......if ya know what i mean. ok, lets take cutie-honey for example. how come everytime she fights, she SOMEHOW manages to loose her clothes in the prosses?!?! so that's why i'm creating this group!............though we don't have a name yet *sweatdrop* but we're working on it!

I have a friend who thinks all anime is for perverts because it all men watching sailor girls (she also thinks watching sailor moon turned her nephew gay) One day we were supposed to meet at the U of O library after she has a study session and I have anime club in the basement of the library.   Later that night she tells me she snuck up to the anime club viewing room and was watching through the window for like 40 minutes thorough two eps of something with fighting sailor girls (Angelic Layer) and ASSUMED we were watching sailor moon.

On a side note a friend was showing me a bunch of Anime he had downloaded and was putting on cd’s.  About 3 seconds of La Blue girl was enough for me to say no thanks to that one.

I just realized, although EVERY story I write is action with chicks saving the world there is never any sex.  I can’t write for anime!

Andie & I are both Roman Catholic Christians.

There is a forum for Christian anime fans at: www.christiananime.net

It's been around for about 6 years. Besides the standard discussions like 'what are you watching now / listening to now,' there are also non-anime topics, such as Bible discussions, prayer/devotional topics, and many threads about 'What did you think of [show X] or [Manga Y]' from a Christian perspective. I think the site is open to anyone regardless of personal faith as long as the participants don't act like flaming trolls.

Check it out & have fun!

Yeah, no problem there. Socially the holiday has already been given several different meanings, and the main focus has become on the family and togetherness. That's certainly something that should be celebrated and remembered, and nobody should be shunned from doing that. ^_^

I agree.

While I may not be christian, or religious, I have my own set of spiritual beliefs. I'm agnostic so I don't believe or disbelieve in a god, I definitely don't believe in a heaven or hell, and I take many aspects of Buddhism into my own beliefs. It's my own mixture of different religions that works for me.

I love to debate, but no persecuting for me! You believe what you believe and I believe what I believe. As long as you don't tell me I'm wrong. I won't tell you you're wrong.

Just because you're not religious doesn't mean you can't be spiritual.

And we're becoming more and more Catholic too, what with all the immigration going on. Hello 17th century all over again!

How many different bibles are there? I don't mean Torah, Bible, Koran, I mean King James, what Catholics use, and what others use. Just curious. I heard something at my brother's wedding that made me wonder that, as what was said at the wedding was not in my Oxford Study Bible.

Quote
How many different bibles are there?
Two of the versions that Catholics use are the Douay-Rheims and the American Standard (with maybe 3 or so other authorized versions, too.) There are probably over a dozen other versions throughout the rest of Christendom. Most of them vary by reading level. ("What does 'deign' mean?")

I discovered an amusing 'escaped' variation called 'The Heliand.' Remember the game of 'telephone,' when you tell something to someone, and pass it on, then check it about 15 people down the line?

Well, around the 5th century some early Christian missionaries spread the Word into Gothic lands (the real Goths, Visigoths, Swabes, Wends, Jutes, etc...)

... and about 500 years later (1066AD,) this one Germanic guy tries to 'witness' to someone who's already a monk. The monk, Adam of Bremen, immediately recognizes the Tale of Christ, and offered to write it down, to the joy of the man who had memorized it as it had been told to him, handed down word of mouth. Adam was probably thinking to himself: "Dude this is RICH, I gotta write down your version!"

The result reads something like the Gospel According to Beowulf. What's most interesting is that despite the change in settings and details, terms, and other scenes, basic Christian theology remains intact: sin, repentance,  and salvation are there, as is the Sermon of the Mount.

But other details are hilariously morphed into The High Adventure of Mighty Christ and his Armed Retainers. Everybody's boats and ships are the high-prowed build common to Northern Europe. Peter is kind of a Boromir/Berserk character and a great guy to be on *your side* in any RPG-type tavern brawl. In the Wedding Feast at Hill-Fort Cana, everybody is there to get thoroughly blotto. Christ's 40 days in the desert (typical Goth: "What's a desert?") became 40 days of single combat with the devil: swords, shields, helms, armor and all. The Temptations are exchanged between blows. CLANK! THUD!

Very fun reading.

Reminds me of a version of the nativity story used by early Mongols right before Kubla Khans expansion to the west.   The Nativity took place in a horse pasture and all the had to wrap the baby in was an old horse blanket.

There was a movie once ware some one retold the Christ story in native American terms.  Allthough it was a movie I'm sure the same process may have been used as by Misionaries in Mexico who taught in Aztec terms and redressed some saints and important bible figures as Aztec gods

A few days ago, I ventured into fanfiction.net, where I was a little surprised to find a rather large collection of bible fanfics!  I lol'd!

Miau~!!  Used to practice more....But since moving around, it's hard to settle, you know?  I also like Anime, but I was in church before I was into anime.  *shrug*  Hooray for open-mindedness!

.......Are there really Bible fictions?  What....(I'm going to regret this)...would an example plot be for these??  O_o

This brings to mind Cosplay Church. Did anyone attend that last year. Bible Study on Alchemy as related to Full Metal Alchemist on the Sunday morning of the Con. It was pretty sweet and I'm curious if those two plan to make a return?

Just watched Trinity Blood. Made me laugh a bit, with the liberties they took with the Catholic church of the future. That and mixing up Latin with English.

Esther is a Persian name. Astre is Latin for star, not English.

Yeah, that show/manga is pretty cool/interesting to see the different sources they used and how they compiled them.

I didn't stay long enough to browse, but I'll bet there's some hot yaoi action in there!

Well, the Bible fanfics are usually just Bible stories illustrated in manga format. Not original takes or actual fiction, I'd imagine.

Well, fanfiction.net doesn't host images, so they can't be manga.  I can't verify right now since the site's blocked by my company's firewall (and with good reason too - I wouldn't want my employees going in that cesspool of Mary-Sue fic and furry pr0n)

My female Muslim friend went to Japan recently and was lucky enough to visit Gamers.  For whatever reason, seems like all the Muslim friends I've had have all loved anime. She also picked up a yukata. I'm jealous to the max. I thought of posting her pics, but dunno if she'd be too happy about me doing so. She's totally geeking out in some of the pics, too.

Most of my friends are atheist/agnostic. Not that I have a problem with anyone that believes in a deity, but that's just how it is.

For most intents and purposes, I probably follow most of what is considered to be "proper" for a religious person anyways. I don't smoke, I don't do drugs, I don't even drink caffeine. Although I do swear like a sailor. But I never say "G** damn" or anything like that.. even when some of my religious friends do.

Seperation of church and anime....when has one ever even crossed over into the other's territory? I mean, I understand it may have been a joke or whatever, but still...just kind of overly "protective", wouldn't you say?

Well, not in Japanese animation, but it's been known to happen in this country.  Like that thing with the Christian vegetables...

Come to think of it, a particularly interesting example is Night on the Galactic Railroad (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_on_the_Galactic_Railroad).  I'd like to note also that I really enjoy watching this sort of thing, as I think it's a valuable artistic exploration of pretty important themes.  It's a far cry from the kiddie oriented brainwashing of that tomato and carrot thing.

You poor thing. What Anna Nicole show? It was on prime time then eh? Sorry, I work those hours.

You know, I see a bit of a common thread running through here. On the face of it is anti-Christian sentiment, but what it really is, is intolerance. People running their mouths off, and not showing any enlightenment they possess themselves.

You got to watch for that from any direction. Christians, and anti-Christians, and non-Christians, especially today with it being real easy to make this world a holy battlefield. (Batman!)

Say a few Na Myo Ho Renge Kyo's and call me in the morning. Like 2 hours worth of those!

For me, that's not it, it has nothing to do with Christian or non-Christian.
Veggie Tales is just a really stupid show, and that's what I think. :)

:Edit:
Oh, and another thing... this is just a thread in the kumori-con forums, not the place to look for enlightening conversation. Look elsewhere if you want that, imo.
On top of that, it appears to me that you're being intolerant of intolerant people. :P

On that note, as I see people starting to get pissy, it's time to lock this thread. Everyone's religion is fine, and I'm even ok with people expressing pride in their religion, but commentary about other peoples' preferences inevitably leads to flamewars, which are bad, mmmkay? Let's not forget that Kumoricon is about anime.

Everyone wave bye to this thread.
