The Kumoricon version of Hall Cosplay!

Kumoricon Hall Cosplay

Though out the weekend, various judges will be searching the Kumoricon halls and panels looking for costumes that stand out in some special way.

1.
Our judges are quite diverse. Some are experts when it comes to sewing and tailoring and these judges will be looking for costuming excellence. If one of these judges selects you for an award, you will be asked who made your costume because we would like the award to go to the person that did the work. In this case we will take down your name as “Model” and the person who made the costume as the “Winner.” If the person who made the costume is not attending, the ribbon will be given to the Model, but we request that it be forwarded to the costume creator. We believe people are honest and want credit to be given where credit is due and we trust you to get the ribbon to the person that deserves it.

[Exception: If you are modeling a costume that you had commissioned, we are not against giving a prize that will go to a smaller scale costume creator that is less well known or doesn’t make costumes as a full time job. But, if your costume was created by someone who is known to be one of the best in the business (someone like Melissa Quinn as an example of consistent excellence), we would prefer to acknowledge someone with fewer credentials. There are others that would fall into the same catagory and by no means do I mean to single out Melissa, but she is the best Pacific Northwest Anime example I could think of.

See section 3, you still have a chance to win something in that same costume!]

2.
Some judges are really into props and little details. Perhaps you don’t have the most perfect overall costume, but you went out of the way to make accessories to make your outfit stand out, a judge might choose to award that. (Think of an average Sumomo costume, but the cosplayer carrying around a giant, well made Floppy Disk or other prop to provide scale). Or maybe the Cosplayer made an amazing Zelda Shield! (Again, the same rules from section 1 about modeling vs. actually being the creator of the prop apply.)

3.
Some of the judges will just be on the look out for fun spontaneous moments that just can’t be planned. They are the judges that are focused on the “Play” portion of the word Cosplay. For example, last year a group of female Final Fantasy characters pretended to sing background to “Amish Paradise” and made up a simple choreographed dance on the spot while another Final Fantasy character decided to sing lead. It’s spontaneous moments that make a convention special and this is a way of rewarding them. Another example would be giving a very “in character” performance during ‘open mic’ Karaoke or someone being very much in character in the halls (as long as you aren’t doing a real life imitation of Happosai!).

4.
And finally, are you an attendee who thinks a volunteer or staff’s costume should be recognized? Go to the info-desk to nominate a staff member or volunteer.  Any staff or volunteer winner will be selected by attendees.

The Fine Print:
All Winners must be willing to give out his or her name, badge number, and be willing to be photographed for our web page. If you like, you will have the option of only being identified by nickname on the web.

Questions?  Post them right here and we'll answer them for you.

Will the judges be up late enough to visit the Live Action Sailor Moon Slumber Party?

I'm luring some of my Vampire players to the con by promising them XP if they come dressed in character and watch an episode. I'm sure the Victorian would be overjoyed to be seen.

I also have a costume......

There will be judges for most of the catagories keeping varied hours and visiting different events.  There won't be an exact schedule, it depends on availability.

No guarantees, but I'd say there's a good chance.  Since it's Hall Cosplay, the best place to be spotted would be "in the halls" or at an event that doesn't have dimmed lights for seating.

::tears of joy:: A convention that gives credit to the creator of commissioned outfits. ;_; I'm so happy!
I make costumes for a living (but nobody has even heard of me ^^;; ), and honestly, my customers are treated like crud whenever they tell judges/other cosplayers that they had their outfits commissioned.
Its horrible. Nobody ever seems to remember that even though the person wearing the outfit didn't make it, someone did!
I had a horrible experience with a certain final fantasy outfit earlier this year. There was all this complicated hubbub, but the point of it all was simply, since my customer (and now close friend..so he can compete in it now, lol) didn't make it himself, it instantly went from award worthy, to something he pulled out of the trash can.  I couldn't believe it when I was told about it. I spent days on end without sleep, putting every ounce of my energy into the smallest details that most people wouldn't even notice unless they were practically rubbing up against him (which did end up happening a lot. The glompers appreciated the details ^_^), and since it wasn't his work, it was worthless.
::pauses:: Oh dear, run-on sentences. I must be ranting...I'm so sorry!
Erg. There was a point to this...hmm...where was I going?
Oh, right!
Kumoricon, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, for remembering that costume designers are people too! ::dabs eyes with kercheif:: You now have my loyalty.

Wow, the reason I was not going to cosplay was due to that reason, people just don't accept comissioned costumes. But this changes the situation, I need to think up one for next year then....

You're welcome, Lost Elf!

It comes down to two main things for me.  We want to see our halls filled with great costumes, and we want people to be honest and not say they made something that they didn't.

Going back to the Big Named Costumers, on a hall costume basis, I wouldn't be against gathering up the people that were wearing his or her costumes, taking a group picture, and sending a letter thanking creater for making our halls more beautiful (and if I run into a lot of someone's work, I'll do just that).  I may not always be the cosplay director, but I know the core staff and I have similar opinions on this.

For the main cosplay, something that could be considered over the next few years, as long as the contest totally seperates the Presentation from the Costume Judging, is to have a "professional" class that is only for costumes made by professionals (using the real definition of the word) not taking into account who is wearing the costume.  If that person had never been on stage before, the presentation portion would still be in the novice catagory.

It's not too late to piece something together!  Hit Value Village and thrift stores.  Go to martial art stores and look at Kendo Uniforms...that kind of thing.  I just bought a Yukada (summer kimono) to fit my 6'6 husband at Owajamia on Sunday.  There's plenty of time for a costume, and plenty of time to make up a skit.  :)

Hmm, in that case I think I'll come up with my own costume by simply putting together some clothings and make it look anime-ish. I know cosplay is supposed to be a work copied from anime/manga characters, but I can go as a 'original character'..... right?
I've seen some people come up with their own interesting outfit so I think it would be fun *and maybe little more affordable and less time consuming.* ^^;

Where will the pictures that got taken be uploaded?  I'd sure like to see them all!  I also wanted to say thanks to all the great cosplayers and very respectful cosplay watchers.  Nobody glomped me without permission, so thank you!  I get quite uncomfortable in large groups 'cuz I got some social anxiety *twitch* but I felt really at home with Kumoricon and all the staff people were super nice!

So thanks everybody  :)

The pictures wul be uploaded to the Konoricon site within a few days.

Happily, we got a new (amazlying qualified) webmaster about 1 day before the con and is dedicated to just that position instead several people "wearing 4 or 5 different 'hats'," updating he web when they got time between other things.   We're glad we don't have to pay him for the position because he'd cost a lot, but luckily we got away with Pizza, Vanilla Coke, and nodding and smiling at him when he says things like "grep," "man-page," "My SQL and Sequal Server," and calls "Perl the 'duct tape of the internet'!"   (Actually we do know what he's talking about, just not to his level and if we nod, smile and then give him a cookie...he stays very happy!)

I received a ribbon from a lady, but my pic wasn't taken, nor was the back of the ribbon filled out or my info written down.  That was Monday near the end of the con.  I was dressed as "Chinese Mao" Ranma, with the hat and matching outfit.  I was so happy to get a ribbon!

We might have just been tired by then.  When you got a ribbon, most people were asked to go to the info desk.  The person most likely just forgot to tell you that.  But if you got one of the "rainbow" colored ribbons, you deserved it!

Aren't they cool? The image on them are our Kumoricon 'chop.' (A stamp people use for a signature in Japan.)

We'd write your name and info in the cute Hello Kitty notebook and take your picture there.

Oh, I forgot to add, when you get the time, just slip your costume back on and have a friend take a picture of you holding your ribbon.  Then send it to me (PM me first for an adress) and we'd be glad to add you to the gallery.
