You have ___ Months
« on: August 27, 2009, 10:51:49 am »
I donno if you guys have noticed but why do Doctors tell people they have __ months to live?
In all honesty...I think it kills them faster.
My aunt died this morning at 5 am [/When I went to sleep TAAT] the one that I went to California last week to visit
and just last Monday the doctor told hey that she had 4 months to live.
This happened with my uncle too way back when. [/I didn't know him very well]
But the doctor said he had 6 months to live and he died within the week.

it's kinda depressing in a way. I guess what happens to some people [/well -A- people in my family]
is that when someone says they have an allotted time to live..they just give up.
I don't think my aunt wanted to give up but her brain was probably telling her "I only have this long"
And she was probably stressing about it making her cancer advance more.
If that happens then why do doctors tell you how long you have?
This has probably happened to other people as well I'm just saying if it kills the person faster, why tell them?

Well, honestly, I think it's good. Maybe if people got a choice to know or not to know, but I'm sure if they told the doctor not to tell them, they wouldn't.

If you know when the end is, it gives you opportunity to say goodbye, go through your bucket list, or other things. It lets you plan it out, at least. I mean, I'd hate to plan out going on a trip to Aus, let my friends get so hopeful, and then just die before I even got on the plane because I over-estimated myself xP And I'd hate to wallow away in a bed for the last few months of my life, thinking I'd die next week.

Doctors aren't trying to be cruel, they're trying to be fair. Don't be hateful because of that.

Besides, many people have made it long past what some doctor says they'll live for. It's only an estimate, it isn't complete fact. If someone loses hope, hate to say, it's their own choice.

^ This. There really isn't a way of knowing EXACTLY when a person is gonna die.

I'm sorry that happened, though, Monica. D:

I'm sorry Monica. :< I hope your well right now. Everyone here cares about you. :3

But the reason they do that is because they know the person might freak out more if they know they'll die in a week to a few days. Its kind of a reliever. You know your going to die but not for awhile. Then it just sort of happens without you knowing but your not really scared because you were expecting it. I have no idea if this is really helping but I'm trying.  :(  But also what hazuza said is that Sometimes they really aren't sure when the person is going to die. it realyl is an estimate but when somethings more fatal the time of course shortens.

I'm sorry Monica. ):
Sometimes it's the opposite case though.
A couple of years ago they told my Grandma she probably only had a few months, yet she lived for another year or so.
it really depends on how people take the news I suppose.

My condolences on your loss.

I think doctors are trying to let patients know there is nothing more the doctors can do, and that the person should try to get their affairs in order, like the will, saying good bye to the important people, and to maybe take that dream vacation the person always hoped to take someday, apply to the Make a Wish foundation for people too old to really apply, whatever.

Have Fun
