"Open Mic" versus "Karaoke Room"

A lot of you attended Karaoke Room, which ended up being a haven for people who were getting tired of the dance (whether physically or otherwise).

However, there was a little bit of confusion over the name of the event. This was partially because Open Mic ran only an hour and had few performers, due to the Contest running late.  It is also because staff kept referring to Salon B as the "Karaoke Room" since that's where the contest was held, which confused things.  I want to change the name and I would like your suggestions. What should we call "Karaoke Room"?

There is a slight difference between Open Mic and Karaoke Room, and if we continue to differentiate the two, those differences will become bigger every year. Open Mic is supposed to be exactly like the karaoke contest, except unjudged and with very few rules about what you can sing. Karaoke Room is supposed to be more like karaoke really is in Japan.

So, can I have suggestions for an alternate name for "Karaoke Room?" It should be something that reflects traditional karaoke in Japan, the kind that you do in "booths." Ours will be bigger than a booth, though. The best I've thought of is "Free Sing," but I'm sure we could do better.

I know we've got the fancy machine and all, but Karaoke Revolution is just so much more fun!  Insted of just singing, you get points and can build up combos as you get more and more back to back phrases correct.  Also, Karaoke Revolution 3 will be out in November, so we'll have at least 3 US versions, if not four, of songs to choose from.  

Also, I got the Japanese Anime edition of Karaoke Revolution working.  It's a more primative game than the US version, and the Lyrics are in Hiragana, but I have printed out lyric sheets in Romanji.

The great thing about it, is I was controlling the game and riding the level of the lead singer.  When someone was dead on, I turned the lead singer all the way off; when someone else was having trouble finding where they should be singing, I turned the singer up for a bit to bring the person back in tune.  In my opinion, that's how to do the other days of open Karaoke.

Since it was commented on, where was Karaoke Revolution set up? I looked a LOT and couldn't locate it anywhere, which was kind of frustrating... meh, oh well. Always next year!

I'd call it something like "Free Mic" or something... I really can't think of a good name. I didn't have enough time to stop by the Karaoke Room, so how did that go? Could you only use the songs on the machine, and what kind of songs were on it?

I would've loved to enter the contest but I didn't have a CD burned... I'll DEFINATELY enter next year, though.

Almost all of the Japanese Karaoke Revolution disks are expansion disks and we couldn't get the Anime version to work with the main disk.  We had tried to put just put in the Anime Disk (just randomly) and from what we could read, it looked like an error message came up.  We would click YES and we'd end up in a loop.  Well, randomly yesterday at home I hit 'No' and it turns out that it is one of the only Stand Alone Japanese Karaoke Revolution game... Who knew?  Also, I don't know if I would have had the heart to kick the Para-Para players off of my pink Japanese PS2 and I wasn't sure which other machine was Japanese or chipped. (everyone who gets a Japanese PS2 should be forced to buy a pink one!  No wait, if they did, mine wouldn't be as cool!)

Because of the amount of power we were using downstairs, we only had Karaoke Revolution going Saturday Night right after the cosplay until closing.  We were under the stairs in the back of the room.  I'm on staff at Sakura as well, and the people in charge of the game rooms may decide to use it.  I've offered it to them.

Well, Sailor Naboo and I had a very interesting chat over the phone regarding Karaoke Revolution, among other things. My response was that I'm not very fond of Karaoke Revolution, because it feels "restrictive." She commented that it's great if you have time to try it out alone. That sounded like a good idea to me, especially since that's how I got started playing DDR two years ago.

Still, we have a karaoke machine, I love it, a lot of other people loved it, and we still haven't figured out all the features on it, so next year it should be even better!! I'm hoping the con will be ready to buy at least one disc of Japanese karaoke songs (they include collections of over 200 songs each and region is not a problem), and then work out plans to have tons more non-karaoke versions of Japanese music available for people to search through.

I have finally gotten to play Karaoke Revolution and I gotta say I love it.

I like it a lot better than normal karaoke because you get a hint of the tune even when the lead singer's volume is all the way down.

If anything I think that thre shoul be a room with a few PS2s and all the Karaoke Revolution games! You could have the people go through the song list on the different games and only do one song at a time. The Staffer present would make sure that everyone took turns and nothing happened to the three (or four) PS2s.

I just think that not only is it popular enough for something the size of a video room, but having it away from the DDR machines would be good!

Tonight at Beth's party I got a great chance to play Karaoke Revolution -- with my voice in tact, unlike both years of Kumori Con where the game was available -- and I realized that my problem with the game is not that my pitch is off... I was just trying to do songs that were out of my range or songs I hardly knew the lyrics to.  I found a few low-range songs and was able to get some pretty high scores this time.

.... Dangit. Beth's Karaoke Revolution has taken over my Karaoke Room again! Grrrrr. *shakes fist*

Oh,  just call the karaoke contest "Karaoke Contest" and open mic "Open Mic" or "Karaoke--Free Sing."  Is that what you mean?  The non-contest karaoke can be the "Karaoke Room." How's that?

Well, "Karaoke Room" is the third event, yes, and the one I was trying to think of a new name for. Most of the people were calling it "Open Mic," even though Open Mic was the day before.

However, that was partially to do with a misconception with some of the volunteers. They were mistaken and posted a note on the door that said "Open Mic." Can't really blame them, though. As Open Mic the previous night was so short, the event opposite of the dance became an extension of Open Mic in spirit.

It seems like "Free Sing" may end up being the new name of Karaoke Room, but only if we lack any better ideas.
