I have to keep reminding myself that I need to read the books so I can justify hating them. The hard part is seeing stuff like this and know that it's going to be beyond awful.

No, you do not need to read the books to justify.
There are enough online resources to give you a plot synopsis or excerpts.
You don't need to drink spoiled milk to know that it's bad.

I know I know. I pretty much know what's in it, all the adjectives for Edward, all the inside jokes, all the team mr. sparkle vs. team vanishing-shirts bruhaha, but if I ever come in contact with a rapid fangirl who starts shouting because I insult it and they say, "You never read it," I want to back it up.

All I can really do is sigh...there will ALWAYS be something new for people like that to obsess over. Whether good or bad. For example, I loved the Death Note series...however, the insane fangirl obsessions with the main characters annoys me to all hell. But that will not stop me from defending it in the end. My G/F I happen to find Twilight entertaining & we don't have some kind of crazy obsession that will lead us into a fandom killing spree over it. A multiple page thread just to publicly show that you are on the other side of the fence as the fandom, only helps keeps it alive...let the crazy be crazy alone lol. Once the last movie is done, there will be a new face for them to obsess over, & everyone here will jump on the hate train without even thinking about it.

Maybe but Twilight is the only series I've heard of where fans will key your car if you so much as say you didn't like it.

Just as a social experiment, I really think Hollywood should release one of the last Harry Potter movies on the same day as a Twilight movie.
