New look for the forums?
« on: September 22, 2010, 12:49:38 pm »
Wouldn't it be cool if they worked on the forums and made it more....anime like?
For example...different colors, and a background on the forums of the kumoricon 2011 mascot, or something.

Who agrees? disagrees?

Simplicity tends to make things easier and less bandwidth usage, quicker page loads and easy organization

That would look nice ^^ considering the only Kumoricon looking thing i've seen on here is the logo at the top of the screen and the little umbrella icon on the tab.

Our bandwidth problems have been pretty bad as-is recently.  Also, since anime is such a diverse genre, the only way to not annoy some people would be need to be optional skins.

However, if there was a way to stick all the chibi mascots to date somewhere, maybe at the bottom of the page, that would be a cute touch :)  Or, maybe in the header somehow?

Hey Jeff, you want a challenge, right?  Right?

Ahh, well I think most people would enjoy the Kumoricon 2011 mascot in the background, I don't think it would annoy some people because there on the Kumoricon forums, and most of them attend Kumoricon ;D. I do understand the bandwidth problems though.

That's a good idea! ^^, I think in the header would be the best, I just think it would be cool to see something new is all.

I hope Jeff accepts this challenge! :)

I think what this calls for is more people to learn from Yoda-Tyrill
on how to upkeep the website, or specifically how to modify the
boards (Jeff may not be ready to let other hands touch his code
for the main site... ^_^) so as to have a TEAM (whats that?) working
on making this site streamlined and still eye-catching. Different color/
scheme options or having a design for a new header bar that is
specific to our boards in a very detailed way...

These are all things that web-design students could mention to us
they know how to accomplish and could show a portfolio or a test of
their skills to Jeff, so he could use the man-power to make this website
run without him having to be up 24/7 to do it. (Whats that whole sleep
thing about? Right Jeff?)

I think if you understand the complexities and the work involved, come up
with a proposal and a explanation of what you'd like to do, and PM or
e-mail our Website Administrator about it, so he can start looking through
people who might be interested in working with his team to innovate the
website or the forums at least.

Ally ...

Making more work for Jeff is my hobby.  Why you want other people taking the burdens off of him?

Ok guys, some misunderstandings here. :)

First off, the difference in bandwidth will be negligible. The front page is already nearly 1/3 of a MB. Repeated page views will be cached. Also, the issue with the server we have been having is not bandwidth, it is memory usage, which is completely different, and is probably being caused (or was being caused, if it has been reduced) by some errant code somewhere or issues causing the server to block in the middle of some page requests. Simply adding some images isn't going to matter.

Secondly, yes, I already do have web staff who contribute code. It is not just me. They have access to our source code (but not live data) and use a developer site for dev/test so access to the live operational site isn't an issue.

However... yes, more staff are welcome, or even volunteers, if you'd just like to contribute one thing. For example, the countdown timer at the bottom of the forums was a forum mod made by a staffer (in a different position) but doing an extra volunteer item for web.

We could have an additional forum theme for this. However, thus far, it has not been a priority to create one. However, if somebody would like to volunteer to specifically do this, then it will happen. :)

Jeff FTW! :D

I would volunteer, and want too but I don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to that type of stuff  :-\

If you want to volunteer to do part of it (like, say, just graphic design, but not coding), that might be enough to get the ball rolling. I can't promise that that means it will be completed, but if you can contribute something significant that would still be helpful.

Does it work better to do a design and then make it fit the requirements of a header image, or start with the requirements for a header image for a volunteer graphic artist to work from?

Not having designed a forum theme myself, I'm going to say that it's probably better to start with the requirements for a theme and design the graphics around that.

I really don't know what you guys are talking about. I like the 2009 Mascot color scheme.

I've liked it since 2005!

being able to have a profile we can fix up would be pretty rad. but i guess that would too much coding.

MAN I WOULD LOVE FOR THIS TO BECOME GAIA ONLINE.

I personally think there is nothing wrong with our lay-out, It's simple, it's nice. Let's not change it.

Oh man, just what we need, more sparkles and more drama.

As far as custom profiles so that you can customize the color scheme for your login that wouldn't bee too much of a resource drain. The admins would just have to make sure the color palette was a reasonable size and there were only minor changes available. I know plenty of people who prefer white text on a black background for some reason.
