Help Kimiski find an ART SCHOOL~
« on: September 23, 2010, 02:47:34 am »
I'm looking into Art Schools to transfer to from Chemeketa, or a school with a good Art program.
Preferably in Oregon, or in Washington/California, I want to re-main semi-close to home.

I want to major in Illustration and minor in Graphic Design

Pacific Northwest College of Art (Portland, OR)
Academy of Art University (San Francisco, CA)
Art Center College of Design (Pasadena, CA)
California College of the Arts (San Francisco, CA)
Laguna College of Art and Design (Laguna, CA)
Portland Art Institute (Portland, OR)
WestWood College (CA)
International Academy of Design and Technology (Seattle, WA)
Platt College (San Diego, CA)

Farther Away-  :'( :'( :'( :'(
The American Academy of Art (Chicago, IL)
Nossi College of Art (Nashville, TN)
Pennsylvania College of Art and Design (Lancaster, PA)
Art Academy of Cincinnati (Cincinnati, OH)
The University of the Arts (Philadelphia, PA)

if you really are serious about this and wouldn't mind having to pay soo much in the end, try the art institute of portland or seattle, washington. i went to the portland art institute for 2 terms and i did love the teachers and the program but it was too harsh for me lol

i do plan on being a manga-ka but i think it was a very heavy program for something i like to do on my spare time

but if you really want to be hardcore and want this to be your life your carreer, then just go and talk with someone at the art institute and see if you like the school, the teachers, the programs, and the classes ^_^ it never hurts to just look :3

Yeah, I was gonna recommend the Art Institute of Portland, too.  I've heard good things about their education system.
My cosplay plans for 2022 (thus far): Vanir from Konosuba
My son's plans this year (thus far): Penguin Chiyo-chan from Azumanga Daioh

See, I had a couple friends who went to AI in Portland, and they said it was a horrible program and that the AI will take anyone as long as they can pay, skill and all that doesn't matter. They just want money.

But, really my question is which degree I should go for out of the two above, not which school to apply to.

graphic design and development for sure. you'll have a lot more open to you than just graphic design itself ^^

I really wish you luck in finding a good path, but please be careful about schools. I don't know about PNCA or Art Institute, but one of my best friends went to International Academy of Design & Technology. They absolutely do soak people for all they're worth, with little consideration toward making sure they're marketable. They encourage people to sign up for more and more student loans on the hope of getting a good job afterward, but those hopes prove to be slim because most employers don't even know who IADT is.

One good way to tell is to check with state schools: Do they accept any of PNCA's coursework as equivalent? If it's a course they don't offer, that's one thing - but if a state school won't even accept PNCA's core curriculum for credit, it's not a good sign.

Another good way is to check the 'Net for horror stories. Every institution will have some, because there are always disgruntled people who want someone else to blame. But if you find mountains of them, be wary.

One bad way to tell? Go take one of their tours. IADT is well-practiced at giving the appearance of being official, and they pay a lot of attention to detail in mimicking real schools. But their programs are much like cosplay props: Mostly show for the sake of looking good, with little or no function.
This is my serious voice. Otherwise, I'm just another anime fan, not a moderator.

^ Thanks for that
That was actually one of the schools on my consideration list
I'm not sure how exactly I'm going to rule out legit schools from one's that are not :/
I know PNCA is legit though, because CCC even has a transfer program with them- but that's if I get into PNCA
So I need to look at others as well.

Note: You don't need a degree in something to get a job in that industry, IMO Arts degrees are pretty low end degrees for earning potential. Whats more important is those extracurricular activities designing that school paper or other clubs. Companies never say "Requires: Arts Degree" what they do say is "Show us your previous experience, 2 years minimum"

Choosing a school you need to way your degree against your earning potential. Again companies aren't going to say, "Oh you didn't go to THIS prestigious school", the most you'll get if your lucky is a "oh cool my cousin went there" or something. And if they do say the former, you probably don't want to work for them, right?

And last comment, IMO any school that goes out of their way to advertise how GREAT they are, they're only looking for your money. Advertisements are for PURCHASING THINGS you cant buy a good education and work experience.

(I did write this in the aspect that changing your degree might be an option, so don't take it as a call to bail out from it =) )

Because Juilliard is a performing arts conservatory, not an art school.  ;)
