The venue is set back to Pioneer Courthouse Square (official) in Downtown Portland!

also please no cosplay! this is suppose to be a serious event, so please wear something more appropriate. kumoricon or event shirts are okay.

Please bring wax-free and non-colored candles!!

just letting you know i cannot make it until 8pm since i forgot that i work from 5-8pm that night. IF ANYONE IS WILLING TO TAKE OVER FOR ME, please LET ME KNOW ASAP! if not that is fine, you don't have to go as a group, since portland is coming together anyways and i'm sure there will be many there to support you <3~

so i saw this on facebook and i really wanted to inform those who do not have a facebook or twitter and happen to pass by here

i also do want to make this a meetup for those of us who want to go as a group as friends, loved ones, fellow cosplayers, etc. and would want to come together to pray or give hope to the Japanese earthquake/tsunami victims and survivors.

**(meeting in front of the umbrella, businessman statue @5:30pm)**

here is the information i got from the site:

Time and Date: Friday, March 18 · 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Location: Pioneer Courthouse Square, Downtown Portland
max stop: Pioneer Courthouse Square (BLUE and/or RED line)

Created By: Mana Morimoto, Mayuko Yamaura, Asami Katayama

More Info: follow us on twitter! http://twitter.com/vigil4japanpdx

our website: http://www.vigil4japanpdx.org/

On March 11th, a 9.0. earthquake occurred off the coast of Japan. The earthquake created tsunami waves up to 33ft that struck Japan, with smaller waves in many other countries.
The death toll now exceeds 1,300, thousands of people are still missing and 300,000 people have been forced to leave their homes. The earthquake caused extensive damage in Japan, including heavy damage to roads and railways as well as fires in many areas, and a dam collapse. Around 4.4 million households in northeastern Japan were left without electricity and 1.4 million without water.
There were explosions at the nuclear reactor plants. 190 people suffering from radiation and 80 people trapped in that area

We are a group of students from Japan and we feel so devastated by the whole thing and wanted to do something for our country. We thought holding a vigil would be a great way to have a positive impact and help people feel connected to one another and not powerless.

Mercy Corps is co-sponsoring this vigil! We are giving all the donation to them and they will send it to Peace Winds in Japan. They are helping provide emergency assistance to earthquake survivors in Japan as you read this description right now.
http://www.mercycorps.org/
http://www.peace-winds.org/en/

We are planning to put flyers and donation boxes at restaurants and food carts around the city this week.

Invite all your family, friends, classmates, and co workers. Share this on your wall. The more people attend, the more affective it will be.

We are still figuring out how to make this event more successful. Please let us know if you can help us in any way!

We will try providing candles but there are already over 100 people planning to attend this vigil so there won't be enough. Please bring
a candle and it would be really appreciated if you brought extra ones. Thanks for all your support!

I am worried about my Japanese teachers.  One of them in particular is sort of high strung at times.  I saw her last year when she was assisting with the Sakura Festival at Clark College.  I could tell how she was overworking herself so much just to make sure everything was perfect.  It was in complete contrast to how she was in class.  Made me think of how the other teacher told me to tell her "not to worry so much!"

I can only imagine how difficult this must be for her right now; especially when she has to act like life is normal, continuing to teach her classes and preparing to give her students their finals.  If I saw her right now I'm not even sure if I would dare to ask how she is doing out of a fear that it would force her to remember everything that must be going through her mind.

I will try to make it out to the vigil.

I plan on going!

Chauna can't, though.  She has to work.

Do you think they'll be okay with Kumoricon shirts, or cosplay, even?

I'm sure they'd be fine with the Kumoricon shirts, but I think cosplay may be interpreted as something lighthearted when we're expected to be solemn. Just a guess, though.

The current status is Friday, 6:00pm to 8:00pm (I think), at Director Park (which should be about a block away from Pioneer Square).

The mayor will be there. So, that's pretty cool.

Yes. That's it. It's right down the street from Pioneer Square. The place with the little pool/fountains.

I've never been to one of these before, so does the type of candle matter, or is any candle okay?

I was sure that I didn't see it there last time... in any case, I didn't bring one, and I didn't see the candle buying booth there until after I donated my cash to one of the Mercy Corp's buckets.

But I was there!  It was awesome having the Portland mayor there, too.

I got there a few minutes after it got dark (about 7:50) and there was hardly anyone there.  So I sat and listened to a guy play bagpipes for a while then went home. :P

Yeah, it ended just a little bit after 7:30.  I spoke with one of the drummer-group members there (don't remember their name) as well as one of the students who organized the event.  I'd say I left there around 7:40 or so...
