Good thought, Gryff, but personally most of the "newly discovered" animal articles I see are of unnamed things. Most of them are from the Southeast Asian area, too, like the Phillipenes or Papua New Guinea. I think that maybe the lag is no more than a month or so. Information gets out fast nowadays.
Regardless of who's heard of it or how long they've known about it, this is the first time I'm reading of such creatures, and I think it's awesome!
