guys i need your computer smarts!!!

hey guys,
ok so i just got my laptop a few days ago. its and Acer aspire 5520-5908 and it works great! but the only problem is that i cant connect to my wifi in my own house. my grandmother has her laptop and its connected just fine with our router as is our ipods but i still cant connect! its getting really agrivating that i cant get connected like everybody else. so i took my computer to my school today and had a tech student look at, he some how got it to use the wifi at my high school but when i took it back home and tried to get on line, the poll at the bottom right hand screen that tells whether im connected  or not is a dead no connection. but my computer its self says that im succesfully connected to my wifi. i tried doing what he did which was to go to the wrench in the upper right hand corner of my google chrome and go under the hood and switch off the setting that it tells and still nothing.
as of now i amm using an internet chord connected into the ethernet jack of our router. it works just fine there and thats the only way i can get online at all.
                                           please please please help me!!

There are lots and lots of possible reasons why this could be happening. If you want to PM me, I may be able to assist you remotely. But I will have temporary control over your PC (you can see what I'm doing).

Can you see any wireless networks to connect to?  Since it is an Acer, I am going to assume you are running Windows 7.  There should be an icon a the bottom left that looks like a sloping bar graph that tells you your signal strength and allows you to connect to wireless networks.  When at school your school network should be showing up.  When at home the same should be true for your home network, unless the router is setup to hide your SPID.  If that is the case you need to configure your laptop by telling it what the SPID is and what type of security to use as well as what the security key is for the router.  You may also need to verify that the wireless access card in your laptop is operating and that it's software is installed.  You can find that out by looking in the Device Manager.  The Network and Sharing Center is your best source of links to everything that will get your wireless working.  You can access it from the Control Panel.  This is the best I can do without actually having it here to look at.  Since I don't check this board that often you may want to e-mail me with any questions.  My email is in my profile.
