November 10, 2006 is “Free Admission Day” at
The Japanese Garden in Portland
Portland , Ore. – The Japanese Garden Society of Oregon is having a “Free Admission Day” on Friday, November 10, 2006. Between the hours of 10am-4pm, the Japanese Garden in Portland , Oregon , will open its gates to all members of the public at no charge.

Nestled in the scenic west hills, the Japanese Garden is a haven of tranquil beauty. The garden includes a formal Japanese Tea House, meandering streams, intimate walkways, and an unsurpassed view of Mt. Hood . The 5.5 acre Garden is composed of five separate garden styles—a Strolling Pond Garden, a Tea Garden, a Natural Garden, a Flat Garden, and a Sand and Stone Garden.

“The autumn colors will be out in full at this time,” said Steve Bloom, Executive Director of the Garden, “and we wanted to share the wonderful fall experience of the Garden with the community. We purposely picked a school holiday to encourage families and children to come and visit this magical place when they have the time to truly enjoy everything about the Garden. ” The event is sponsored by Commercial Frame & Art and First Cup Coffeehouse.

Free tours of the Garden will be conducted at 10:45am, 1:00pm and 2:30pm. The Garden Gift Store will also be open and will feature a sale of holiday items, books, and Japanese cultural and art pieces. During Free Admission Day, the Autumn Leaves bonsai exhibit from the world-renowned Weyerhaeuser Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection will be on display and is also free of charge. This collection of living art features bonsai from Canada , China , Japan , Korea , Taiwan , and the United States .

The Japanese Garden is located on the west side of Washington Park , directly above the International Rose Test Gardens at 611 SW Kingston Drive in SW Portland . A free shuttle bus is available to take passengers from the Garden parking lot to the admission gate.

The Japanese Garden Society of Portland is a private 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that operates year-round and is funded through gate admissions, membership dues, and individual and corporate donations.

I might be going with me and bunch of other people from my class we made friends with. Instead of taking a trip to Uwajimaya together. But If not, I still might get to go with my sister and my dad and... tee he.. skip school.

It's definitely worth the trip.  However, given the weather, I'd say wait till spiring and hit it when the cherrys are blooming.  (then go home and watch Ai Yori Aoshi or something).

I've been several times this year, and it is a really nifty experience.  Last time, I made a double feature of it and hit the Chinese garden in the same trip.  This is really instructive to see how Chinese architecture and landscape concepts were borrowed and modified by the Japanese.  Moreover, the Chinese garden is copied from the era in Chinese architectural history which was most similar to the stylistic variants subsequently developed by the Japanese.  It has the least 'bling' of any era of Chinese architecture, opting for brown paint on the woodwork and black slate colored roofs instead of the usual glazed tile look.  It's a lot of fun to see how the styles diverged.

Would we have to make an appointment for tea? There is a tea house there isn't there? Some kind of house, that looks to do events. How would that sound? Meet for tea there? Or just meet. Maybe the Eugene area club will finally get a meeting, in Portland.
Have Fun

I plan to attend the 1pm tour and check it out before that maybe noonish. I'd go later but with PSU's anime club at 3pm going much later makes it hard. Earlier is hard due to working graveyard. i guess a broken black backpack & violet glass's.

not from here.  if you bring it to the con i'll fix.  the deal will be all fixes are free but not the leather creation stuff.

or you could bring it to the eugene/springfield/gleenwood tri city area and I'd trade a fix for some old manga, action figures, rpg books, minis etc
