Greetings!

Welcome to the brand new Kumoricon message board. My name is Beth Wickel aka Sailor Naboo and I was the 2003 and am the 2004 Kumori Con Cosplay Director. I'll list some of my credentials at the end of the post so you can skip them if you want.

We don't have anywhere near all of the details ready to go, but here is a rough idea of our cosplay contests.

Hall Cosplay:
Staff will be wandering the halls looking for excellence in cosplay and after asking to make sure the costume wearer made the costume (or someone else attending the con made the costume...or a parent made the costume for a child...that kind of thing), an on the spot Hall Cosplay award will be given. Last year we gave out Hall Cosplay Ribbons.

Cosplay Contest:
Our cosplay contest is a Hybrid Presentation/Construction contest. Skits must be anime/Japanese video game/Japanese Culture Based. The entry form will have a place to designate if the costume is personally handmade, pieced together or commisioned/purchased, and only handmade costumes (made by one's self, some in the group, someone else at the con, or a parent) are eligable for Best Costume awards. When judging is close, construction will be used as a tie breaker for the "Best of Show" award.

Notes about the Cosplay contest:
The pre meeting and rehersal will be split into several groups so there will be less waiting around for contestants. Yes, there will be a way to pre-register for the cosplay before the con. It will be a while before I have answers to specific information such as the exact size of the stage and the exact number of mikes available, but please feel free to ask questions below.

While I'm not organizing Cosplay, I wouldn't think there would be any problem with staff being nom'd for cosplay... then again, I could see why some people might think there is favoratism if a staff member won.

I don't see any issues with recognising volunteers for Hall Cosplay, as long as it continues to be done the way we are doing it now. That is, with no actual "winner" but with many good costumes being recognised and given a tolken prize. (Ribbons)

If we were to then take all of the Hall Cosplay winners and come up with an over all winner with a major prize, I'd want to exclude volunteers and staff, or have a seperate 'staff' catagory.

Indeed, that makes sense. While I have no doubt that we would be as objective as humanly possible with including staff and volunteers, and probably just as objective as if we did not, the perspective of the average congoer might be that there was favoratism involved... though if the panel of judges was large enough (i.e. more than 3 people I would think) then that idea would be a foolish one.

Eh... probably make it easier to either exclude staff and volunteers, or to have two catagories, "general" and "special".

But then, I'm not running cosplay... and by design I have as little to do with events as possible. :-)

I'd just be satisfied if I had a decent picture taken that I could show to my Grandma. But yeah, staff shouldn't be allowed, or should have a seperate section, in any main cosplay awards. Iit would look kinda biased.

Maybe special shiny ribbons? ^.^

Don't worry, Princess. I agree with you about staff and the cosplay competition. If there are staff members that would like to put on a skit, there is no reason why they couldn't do an exhibition performance. If we had enough staff entering to have a mini competition, we could have non staff judge. (I doubt we'll have to worry about that. Who'll have time!?)

I look at the Hall Cosplay award differently from Sakura Con. I can't imagine picking a winner from all those people in the halls. There are too many different kinds of costumes!

At Kumoricon 2003, I believe we gave out 20 Hall Cosplay ribbons. It's a chance to say, "hey, that's cool!" to someone weaing a costume. What I also like about it is that perhaps not all of the costume is award winning, but the cosplayer really did an amazing job on the wings or the shoes, or something like that. Since I plan on keeping about the same ratio of ribbons to attendees, I feel comfortable if we recognise volunteers.

That's the great thing about pretty ribbons: they're cheap and come in large amounts. ^.^

I've never heard of people getting Ribbions for their hallway costumes, although I DO know that there is a award catogory for hallway costumes. I wounder what kinds of costumes have been given awards?

I hadn't heard of ribbons either, but the people that got them for Hall Cosplay last year seemed to think they were cool.

We looked for all kinds of things. Great costumes, great parts of costumes. Somes people in good costumes that were just really having fun and in character.

Last year a Chii that a daughter sewed with her mom got one. A group of anime musicians got some, various Final Fantasy costumes were recognised. Blackjack got one for that big red costume with the fringe (she kept dissapearing and I forgot to mail her ribbon, so I just brought it to Sakura).

I don't remember all off the top of my head, but then other staff also gave them out as well.

by every year, I assume you mean last and this sakuracon, yes. I was at Kumoricon too. as I'm staff and all.

and my signifigant other is the wonderful and famous Druihd, this year at SakuraCon also known as Shelinda (I think it's an Sh and not a Ch), but I'm half asleep right now...

Hi Kei-Kei,

No, you do not have to do a skit, you can do a walk on. Model the costume for the audience (walk around for a bit and do some sort of turn so they can see the whole thing).

If you want an amazing example of this, I suggest going to http://www.obsessedwithanime.com and picking up a DVD copy of last year's cosplay. I think it only costs about $6. We had an exhibition contestant that had already won awards with her costume (she decided to let others win since there were so many newcomers... but then we decided to give her 'Honarary Best Costume of Show'.... we're like that!)... Anyway, she is a perfect example of how to do a walk on and to really show a costume to it's fullest.

Hall costume ribbons are traditional at Science Fiction Conventions. At OryCon 2003, about 200 hall costume awards were given out. The point of all those ribbons was to encourage people to wear costumes - and the more peole wearing costumes, the better. Yes, 200 hall costume awards may sound like a lot, however, several people recieved multiple awards because they wore several different costumes throughout the con.

I've also heard that at some other con -- the name has slipped my mind -- the people who earned a hall costume award were sent to a special booth someplace in the equivalent of artists' alley to have their photos taken and to recieve the award. This way, the judges had a set of photos to go through near the end of the con to pick the top costumes (and show them to others!) rather than relying on memory to pick the winner.

You know, that's the motivation I needed to get an extra Final Fantasy 6 costume together! Hall costume awards would be awesome! Especially since there are lots of people that are to shy for the stage or can only be there one day!

I like the camera idea. I should mark one memory card just for Hall Cosplay winners and make sure to get pictures of all of them! Since I'm not also doing an event this year (I also did the pajama party last year) I should be able to handle it.

Cosplay isn't just about showing off your cotumes, it's about having fun!

Our Ninja in the cosplay last year didn't really have a costume, he had a belt on his head and a knife. He just happened to be dressed in black and that made him the Ninja.

At many cons the Cosplay contest is based on excellence in costuming and the act itself isn't as important.

We're doing more of a hybid contest. Costume judges will be looking at the handmade costumes, and presentation judges will be evaluating the acts for entertainment value (the tie breaker if needed is costume construction and the quality of the handmade costumes in the groups).

The skits need to be anime/Japanese culture/Japanese origin video game based. As long as your skit has that basis, costuming can be flexible. An example I've given before is that if a group of 10 guys dressed like Klingons want to do a song and dance number to the theme from Sailor Moon, that's fine with me! It would be a riot to see!. (If you do plan on working in a non-anime character or a 'real life' fan stuck in 'anime land' -- or anything along those lines-- don't forget about making sure the skit is anime based!)

This is my first con and so I know hardly anything. But I know I love anime. I have even written my own anime story and am currently trying to find someone who would be willing to draw the art for it. (My own manga type of thing.)

My Question is this: Can I go as a character from my story and compete in the cosplay competition?

Well, it looks like 3 members of the GPACG will be attending KumoriCon. Any news on plans for how the judging will be run? We'll definitely want documentation (stills from the anime or books showing many views of the character) so that if a person picks a character or version of the character's costume we don't recognize, we can still tell if it's an accurate representation of the costume. [Also, the other 2 GPACG people are very new to anime, so they are not at all familiar with anime costumes]
