Con Going into School Year
« on: May 30, 2004, 03:44:20 pm »
Im gonig into 8th grade next year, and the con is gonig on right at the start of the convention! My parents will not let me skip the first day of school to hang out with my fellow Anime fans, and to top it all off, they hate Anime! ERGHHH! I found the listing in Newtype-Usa and I knew I had to go, as do my friends, but we are afrid we might not beable to make it.
Is anyone in the same situation as my friends and I?

There are several things that you can try, since the convention goes until Monday, which is a holiday, you're not actually missing the first day of school, unless you can't get back in time for Tuesday.  Also, ask your parents why they don't like anime.  Most people just have a bad impression of it from something brief that they've seen.  Currently, anime has seen a 300% growth rate in just two years, and there is enough variety in anime that most people can find something they like.  If you know any of your teachers, talk to them about the convention, since anime conventions cover more than just showing anime and cosplay, we also will be having events and panels that will go into Japanese culture, you might be able to get support from your teachers to go.  The other option is, if you can't stay until Monday, you can leave Sunday night, most of our events are on Saturday and Sunday, there are still events through monday, but they end at 5pm.

It depends on where they live, zenix.  My advice: just go Saturday and Sunday, and head home on Monday.  Unless you live somewhere out of the way, like the East Coast or anotehr country, you should make it home intime for the first day of school[/quote]

My parents detested anime when my brothers and I first got into it.  Why?

...well, I mostly blame it on the fact that our first anime was Pokemon, and that we were obsessed with it to a barely sane level.  >.<  I think in general they just got tired of hearing about Ash's latest adventures over the dinner table.  (In our defense, we were respectively twelve, ten, and six at the time.)

In the years since then, I have gradually won them over to tolerance, acceptance, and even grudging approval.  How?  Well, first, I tried to shut up about it, since it was constantly hearing about it that messed things up in the first place...and second, I tried to gently introduce them to parts of the fandom I thought they would like.

My father, an openminded person, drove me to my first conventions and liked the camaraderie he saw there; he was also proud to stand outside the Glacier Room at Sakuracon '04 and listen to the crowd cheering his little girl's first public filk.  (He didn't have a con badge, so he couldn't come inside.)  I finally got his approval of a few carefully chosen series, like Dragon Half and Cowboy Bebop, by asking him to watch them with me and making sure they were the kind of thing he likes.

My mother was a harder nut to crack, but she finally agreed that it was a good hobby when I started cosplaying.  She adores sewing and was delighted to have a reason to teach me.  Thanks to that, I'm a competent cosplayer and have won prizes for my work, and she's finally approved my fandom, if only because it led to my becoming a seamstress.

Yeah, in fact my dad enjoyed watching Haibane Renmei, and as for the schools in and around Portland... my brother's school isn't starting until that Tuesday, so he's going to be able to go to all three days.

You guys are lucky, my father has declared that all anime is porn.

I don't know where he got that idea exactly, as I've had a copy of My Neighbor Totoro sitting in the front room since I was 8, but he insists it's true, and won't be swayed.

But I'm 19, so he can go and watch Star Trek all day for all I care, I'm going to the Con. ^.^

there is nothing wrong with Trekkies... or at least, nothing wrong with all of them... just some of them have issues... just like some otaku... and some star wars geeks, and computer geeks, and bikers... it's the few that give the many a bad name.  >={

Trekkies aren't pycho, just dense.

My Uncle Scotty still tries to use Klingon pick up lines on chicks.  I don't think I'm ever going to get cousins out of that side of the family. ^.^;

The question, as I see it, is does he use the original Klingonese, or does he translate them into English?

Because there is the pivitol factor.  If you approach a Trekkie and swing a Kingonese pick-up line in Klingon, I'm not enough of a Trekkie to know Klingonese, but I might recongize the language.  If the former, I'm gonna smile and walk away; if the latter holds, I'm more likely to get involved in a conversation.  On the other hand, Klingon pick-up lines in English just sound psycho and dumb (read: "My bat'leth requires polishing.  Give me your blood to make it shine!") =D

(as far as I see it, it's only the Trekkers that are dumb X) Well... that and all those snooty Star Wars freaks *shot*)

well... since I doubt there would be much use in clipped Klingon when it comes to pick up lines, I'd imagine they are in tlhIngan Hol.

Awww, crap! Good thing someone mentioned the thing about school conflicting with the con, I would have completely forgot about it until just before the con ^.^;; I'm a Portlander, so it's not like I have travel issues, but I actually do have classes that Monday... I'm going into my Junior year at University of Portland, and the only time off we get is a week for fall break in October after midterms, 3 weeks for winter break, a week for spring break, and then Good Friday, Easter Monday, and Founder's day (which is in April). I mean, don't get me wrong, I love the week long breaks they give us, but the downside is that we don't get national holidays like labor day or MKL Jr. day off....

Hmmm... Maybe I can slip over to the con between classes... Or skip them altogether... Claim I'm sick or something... With anime fever of course ^_~ ! It's only two classes! Hehehehhehehe... *slips into Gollum mode for a second* We shall see, yes, precious...

Yeah, enjoy it while you can. I love college, but the first year was a bit of a shock.... You don't realize how easy you had it in high school till you start college @_@ Then again, in high school you generally couldn't get away with not reading the book and only taking notes in the lecture :P

.... Actually, I don't remember if I ever TOOK notes in high school  8O

Generally.  That didn't stop me, though.

From not reading the book, I mean, not taking notes.  I never did that either.

Wow, I'm such a slacker. :)

>> I'm starting highschool.  Ack.  I look at my life and realize I'm only half-way through school.

And it hurts.  ...Ouch.

:D I didn't take any notes in my geometry class.  XDDD I didn't even do half the work.  Keep in mind, somehow I still got an A.  Our teacher was reaaaaly weird.

Heh, I slept through all of the lectures for my Intro to Programming class college Freshman year, and managed to get the highest A in the class :lol: Best part is, the teacher never noticed that I slept through the lectures. It was so funny, but kinda irritated my classmates  :oops:

Hmm, college seemed easier to me than high school.  It was so nice not having seven different classes to go to in one day (high school).  I was able to actually sketch in between classes and relax.
Not meaning to sound like a slacker, but if it conflicts with the first day of classes (in college) and you think they're easy classes, they usually only go over the syllabis (<-sp?) and you don't miss very much.

No, no, it's not the first day of classes for me. I start on August 30, so it's the second week of classes. If it was the first day then heck yeah, no doubt I would skip it :P Second week of classes (when Labor day is) is typically when  the teachers start getting into the topic for us. But at the same time, it's early enough that I can probably catch up pretty quick without worrying about a test being soon... So I'm probably going to skip, but I won't know for sure until classes start up and another major factor will be what stuff is going on that day.

If you're going to a community college and the con conflicts with your first day of class... I would seriously advise you to NOT miss your class.

I spent the last two years of high school in my local community college (a program called Middle College, so I got college and high school credit for the classes I took), and the way 80% of my college teachers did it, roll was taken and if you weren't there to say "here" you were kicked out of the class and one of the people who WERE there, but not in the class, and wanted to add it got your spot.  Some teachers did it differently, but still.  Don't miss the first day, even if it is boring as (especially compared to con).

As I don't start "real college" (Art school as an animation major) until April, I can't tell you if they follow the same policy.  Probably not, as they have a set curriculum that you follow for your given major and you don't have fifty extra people crammed into one of the small little portables, trying to add Beginning Japanese (in addition to the 90-something the class already had enrolled) o__o;  I imagine it varies from school to school, though.

If you've already secured your place, by all means skip class—I mean, uh... do what you feel is in your long-term best interests.  Ahem >_>;

Lol, wow. Community college sounds crazy!!! Nah, University of Portland is a "real" college, and it's just a small private one. Since these classes are upper division classes, there's probably going to be a maximum of 15-20 people in them, and the profs know all of us well enough to notice we're gone without taking role. Especially in my case since I'm one of maybe four girls in the entire computer science major. Buuuttt.... Since the prof of one of the classes tends to favor girls, he probably won't mind :P I haven't had any classes with the other prof tho... I've never had any troubles with the CS classes being very hard tho, so I sincerely doubt I'll have any reason NOT to skip the classes. Unless there's a test or something, which is unlikely that early in the semester  :wink:
