What is the policy on minors?
« on: May 11, 2004, 01:59:06 am »
I live in Portland, about a fifteen-minute drive away from the Mariott, and I just found this... naturally, my first reaction was "Yay! A con!"

But then, I was curious. What exactly are your policies on minors? See, I'd love to go, but I'm...ah, under eighteen. So here I am, asking: what effect  would that have on my con-going enjoyment?

These are Sakura Con's policy's, so please correct if I'm wrong:

Over 16 but under 18, someone over 18 needs to be your guardian.  They DON'T have to be with you at all times, but they must attend the Con, even if they only sit in one video room the entire time.

Under 16 requires that your guardian be with you at all times.  Unless you need to use the restroom and they're of the oppsite gender.  Then they wait for you. ^.^

I'm assuming under the age of 6 is not a question here. ^.^

I'm very sure Sakura's policy on needing a parent/guardian with you at all times matched up with the child and minor badges.  12 and under, paid admission guardian always with you, 13 and up, guardian with paid admission on site.  Sakura would have put some sort of designation on the badges if there was another age break in the 13-17 year olds to make it easier for security if there was another age group.

My nephew from Tucson came to the con with me and he was 14, and we read all the rules very carefully to make sure of what we needed to do for him.  Since he was 13 or over, and he always had someone at one of the hotels that paid to get in, he was free to do what he wanted until curfew. (We gave him strict orders to always obey security and not to talk back to them).

we will be marking badges for minors.  we're not quite sure how yet, but they will be marked, and there will be cerfews.

My advice, after the HUGE screw up at this years Sakura Con, make all the badges the same, but give Registration several stamps marked MINOR, and stamp the badges of all minors with BIG RED LETTERS. ^.^

If you were out of your room after 1am, and had registered on Friday, best bet is that you know about the problem.

Registration handed out minor badges to adults and adult badges to minors, and never informed security until Saturday. >.<  It made enforcing curfew a joke, really. ^.^;

I'd suggest stressing the Portland City curfew as well at Kumoricon's. On The SCMB alot of people had complained about the curfew, and they don't seem to realize that Seatac has a city curfew for minors... just a suggestion.

we will be stressing the portland curfew, but as it falls before our curfew, it's mostly going to be posted somewhere saying "if it's after midnight, and you're not 18, I suggest not going to play".

http://www.portlandonline.com/shared/cfm/image.cfm?id=33656

That's from the PPB (Portland Police Bureau.  But as I said, that's only going to be something to tell people when they go outside after a certain time.  Inside it's our curfew...

well, curfew at sakuracon was 1am, right?  And the night of the rave it was extended to 3am for minors IN the rave.

We were thinking it would be best to stick with that... but if security feels it's better for midnight so we can mesh with PPB rules... then, so be it.

But, this will be touched on at a meeting.

Curfew at Sakura Con was midnight, but we started heavily enforcing it at 1am.

It was never pushed back for the rave.  Security just never went into the Rave to card people because most people put their badges in their pockets so they wouldn't be lost.  So we carded people the instant they left the rave.

ah, well that answers that... I could have swore when you came into the Console room to check badges you mentioned something about it being pushed back.

Okay... well, midnight sounds like when it'll probably be for us.  Unless there are some really good reasons to have it be sooner or later in the evening.

One benifit that we have is that we're in one hotel, unlike at SakuraCon where security needed to worry about people going between hotels and beind outside after curfew.  Technically, according to how curfew laws are stated, we'd be able to hold events that go past curfew that would have minors at them solely because they are in a supervised location.  However, I don't know if we're going to persue that loophole, as it does open us up for trouble if a minor gets injured or becomes missing during this time.

Actually guys, if somebody 'll take the flyers to.... hold on, let me find the name of the restaurant..... Ah!
Bodacious Classics, a  dance club in Southeast Portland.

This's the place where they have Klingons doing Karaoe every Thursday night. I'm sure if we got some flyers there we'd get some more attendees. It might not be "anime" but they'd at least be in costumes!
As far as the 501st Stormtrooper Legion, they manufacture the stormie armour, you'd still hafta find people to fill the suits, though I think you might not have to buy them all. It was creepy having them chack the costume weaponry and baggage.

Again, that was an actual Star Wars convention sponsored by Lucasfilm itself.

Bodacious Classics... I hope you're not referring to the place across the street from BurgerVille?

Anyway, Midnight's an hour I could live with. That's when I pass out usually, anyway, so it works rather nicely.

I just tried to imagine the Portland Police either going after people dressed in costumes or being assisted by people in costumes.  Somehow I have a feeling that's normal sometimes for them.
Hey, since it's an Anime convention, why don't they rent a mecha or something to help them^_^.  How about the one in Megatokyo?

this all reminds me of that Cowboy Beebop episode where Spike had left that lobster in the fridge for a year, and this fungus thing that grew off of it started attackiing everyone. hahaha! anyway, i'm 14 and i'll be with my 10 year old cousin. do we HAVE to have our Grandma walk around with us? or can she just wait for us some wheres, and we just check in with her now and then?
