The manga's just beating around the bush, trying to add suspense and such. Maybe they're trying to come up with an idea of who they can change drastically next.

I'm surprised nobody posted this news yet...from AnimeNation:QuoteNew Naruto Anime Series AnnouncedAn advertisement published in the latest issue of Japan's Shonen Jump Magazine announces that a new Naruto television series, titled "Naruto Shippuuden" (Naruto ~ Hurricane Legend) will premier early next year. The new series will return to directly adapting Masashi Kishimoto's original manga. The current Naruto television series has been broadcasting original stories for over a year.Article provided by Jon HertzogSo basically, if I'm reading correctly, a new Naruto "series" is beginning, marking the end of "original stories" (i.e., fillers).
It has now been confirmed that the Japanese Naruto anime series will be returning to it's original storyline as told in the Naruto manga series, coming this next February, a few short months from now. Along with returning to the story, Naruto will be getting a brand new name to go by. It is nothing big that will blow your mind, but nonetheless a couple of words have been added - Naruto: Hurricane Chronicles - which appears to play reference to Naruto being a Wind Element user. This is also the name that the fourth Naruto movie, due to be released in theaters next Summer, will be going under as it is a movie that will take place after the time-skip. Now there, is something to the thankful for this Thanksgiving.
