Another AMV help question

So I want to learn how to make AMVs after I've had some ideas float around in my head for awhile.  I went to AMV.org to download what I needed but I was kind of surprised by the number of programs they had available.

Anyway, what programs from AMV.org would you guys recommend?

I have a new MacBook pro, as far as I know it only has Quicktime and MacDVD to play stuff, and I would like to turn the programs into .avi files.  I don't know if I have anything to rip footage from DVDs either.
You guys don't have to describe everything that I need to do but I nudge in the right direction would be great.

Well, just from my experience, I would suggest two programs, both of which are free.

For ripping footage from DVD's, I would suggest AOA DVD Ripper: http://www.aoamedia.com/dvd_ripper.htm
To use the program, you do not need to purchase it, the trial does just fine. You can rip videos by chapter or however you want, with just the oen restriction that you can only rip 10 minutes of footage at a time.

As for converting and encoding well, I would suggest EO Video: http://www.eo-video.com/
This program converts and encodes nearly any video file into an AVI, MPEG, or WAV. It can encode with pretty much any codec you have on your computer, and you get a lot of control with attributes of the output, like codec, frame size, quality, etc.

also imovie is a great program to help you edit. Especially the latest version of imovie '08.
