Orange Box! Good choice because it = win.

There wasn't much of anything other than TVs that caught my eye at most places and I don't have enough for the TV I want yet so I just decided to stay home all day and avoid shoppers entirely.

I love shopping and I need to do some Christmas shopping but I'm waiting until Tuesday.  There is one shopping mall in the area and that place has been packed before Thanksgiving.  I don't want to imagine what it's like now.

;_; I wanna punch my computer for not being able to play Orange Box, especially TF2! *fail comp*

Haven't gone shopping yet. My sister hasn't rolled out of bed so I've been chilling here. Can't imagine how crowded the mall is right now...

I finished all my Christmas shopping before Halloween. I avoid shops, and especially the malls between Thanksgiving & Epiphany (6 Jan) because it's just too crowded to deal with. The only shopping I do this time of year is in food stores because fresh food is important and not something you can buy 2 months in advance.

I woke up at 3 am....not to go shopping, but because my boss at the-store-that-must-not-be-named decided that everyone should work one shift on Black Friday.  You can only guess how tempting it was to turn around and go back when I saw a HUGE line in front of our store.

It actually turned out to be an all right day...I only got yelled at by a customer a couple of times. LOL.

I got up at 4:30 and hit Washington Square with my mom and sister. We spent most of that time standing in line. Then we went back to Tanasbourne and dropped my sister off at Nordstrom Rack, but she said that by the time she got inside, the jeans she wanted were gone. Mom and I tried to go to Target, but the lines stretched all the way to the BACK OF THE STORE. And that was with all the registers open! So we're going to try to brave it tomorrow, although I think the Pokemon toys I wanted will be sold out by then.

Then we went to F.Y.E., and then out to breakfast, and then to Fred Meyer where we stocked up on socks. And then we went home (it was around 11:30 by this point) and went back to bed.

All in all, I spent about 100$ for presents for a bunch of people.

I waited in line at Toys R Us from 12am to 5am in the COLD! to get my hands on their 30GB MP3 players for $80, originally $200.
That ended up a waste.
Between kicking bunches of teen cutters out of line and loud protests over there only being 12 MP3's, the guy was suppose to give 1 ticket per family or group. Well... because he took so long he was rushed with two minutes to opening, so he gave them to the first twelve people, missing me by about 3 groups.

We went in anyway and ran for the $10 MP3 2GB players. All those people who cut refused to go back to the end of the line (It went down the front, around the side, down that side to wind again and go around another corner. I can't beleive how many people showed up at 4am) so we all knew as soon as we started moving inside they would try to join the line. That got ugly cause everyone actually stood their ground and were shouting at them to get their *cough* to the end.

We left Toys R us and went to walmart... UGH!
Walmart Black Friday shoppers scare me to death. Got a 2GB SD card. And a sewing machine for my mom. Went to Game Stop, decided not to wait in that line. Went to Office Max, decided to leave that line too. Didn't even try Best Buy this year... people were on the news lining up at 3pm O.O And people who were getting doughnuts and coffee for friends in the Toys R Us line said it looked like it was miles long, well past Macy's.

Decided to try Shopko. FINALLY got an MP3 player. A video/MP3 player, 2GB. Good enough.
Got breakfast. Went home and slept. And had to get up again to go regular specials shopping with my mom. Got clothes.

I always wonder how the following strategy would do:

Bring along 2-3 friends just to block the door (depending on how many doors and the size of the doors).  As you walk through the entrance, have your friends link arms, and grab the frame of the door.  When this happens, make a mad dash for whatever items you think will be sold out first.  Obviously the mob behind you will not be happy (possibly because they didn't think of it first) and blocking the door will be temporary but it at least gives you a head start.

Or you could rely on my old saying: "Tasers solve all of life's problems."

Well, no one else posted it yet... which is a little surprising.  However here's what I remember doing.

Wake up, 5-6pm, shower, eat
7pm: dropped off roomies at the Target at 185th and Highway 26 (Edge of Hillsboro)
7:30pm: At work for evening passdown... I'm supposed to have the night off, but Extreme Badness occurred and they called me in anyway...
8pm: Back in line with roomies, no one is showing up yet... it's already starting to get cold, so I do a bathroom break and blanket run with them.
10pm: Things are starting to pickup a little... 1-2 other hard core groups show up hoping for big screen TVs at deals near last year's... (Honestly NO one needs a TV larger then 32 inches x.x)
12am: I get paged back in to work to go over the plans, submit my recommendations, go back to the line...
1am-2am: Back in line, killing time nothing really happening...
2am-4am: More people are showing up however it doesn't really start to fill in until 4am.
4am: The line starts to noticeably grow.
5:20am: Some guy from target hands out tickets for the TVs only, thinks there's a limit of 1 per person on the other major sale items (However 'normal retail quantity' is the only fine print for any other item...)
5:40am: Jerks begin to form a second line on the oppsite side of the entrance...
6am: they successfully snipe in to the first round of door-breaching, chaos begins.

At this point several major things go wrong:
  • There's no noticeable crowd control happening, merely a funnel effect through one pair of the store's doors.
  • We try to get carts, and head towards the section of the store that would normally hold the items... (LCD computer screens)
  • They've erected a barricade in the area of the registers and say 'all the bulky stuff' is by the women's dressing room.
  • Boxes of sewing machines, the crappy combo LCD display/TV/DVD player/etc is there too, nothing I'm looking for is (but every Minor deal that warranted large shipments was.)
  • Down both major entryway isles are whole lines of carts dividing the isles.
  • **Carts which impede the progress of those who HAVE carts...
  • **...leading to many carts being abandoned down side isles, and the re-acquisition of other carts.
  • Running around the store to the section (kitty corner) which I suspected had my monitors anyway, I reach the start of the gaming section, and see what I want on an endcut.  4 monitors, which I start loading in to my cart. 2 go in to one of the roomie's carts, he arrives from the correct side.
  • That's all they have there, aside from a few of the other major tech deals, like the hard drive a friend next to us in line wanted (we grabbed it for him, and called him to let him know we had his screen and hard drive.)
  • Major, MAJOR, MAJOR congestion in the electronics area... in the confusion we manage to grab a few of the cheep DVDs we wanted, and some we didn't even know they'd have that we wanted.
  • One of the roomies saw the monitor area restocked, and sniped enough for us to get a total of 5 for our self's instead of just 3.
  • We also saw one more on our way out... but decided against it at the time.  I later bought something equivalent (almost exactly) from Staples Cyber Monday sale... which ended up being just $10 more...

Note of interest: First time out the doors, they didn't bother checking my receipt.  However on the second run (we broke the monitors apart in to a 2 and 3 monitor exit), we all had our receipts checked...  We can only assume they were reacting to some 'incident'.

We snagged Jack in the Box on the way home... mmm Spicy Chicken goodness.

I waited in line with Michael and his roommates. I would just as soon never have to do that again. But I waited for a 22" monitor and a hard drive and a few other things at Target. I got what I wanted. Except for the jerks who cut the line when the doors opened, people were very polite. I took a nap from 10PM-2:30AM to prepare for the coming exhaustion and the 10 people behind my friends in line didn't mind my cutting to rejoin them as long as I wasn't getting the TV they were all there for (which I wasn't.) When I got there we went straight for the monitors and hard drives, the things on deep discount we were most worried about. The rest of the stuff wasn't that difficult to find after we secured our priorities, they weren't on major sales except the sewing machine that I found the last of. I think I was out of the store with all my stuff by about 7:30. Most of my time in the store was spent waiting in the checkout line, I think. I thought about going to Best Buy for more deals but thought better of it.

The real bummers came afterward. I bought a cheap Magnavox home theater system (DVD player/receiver and 5.1 speakers) and when I opened it I found it was a return missing all its documentation and half of its cables, a big dent in the receiver unit, etc. It had clearly been a return that someone didn't check properly before reshelving it. But I went in to Target on Saturday and they still had another and let me swap it out easily.

Saturday we went to K-Mart and took advantage of their 2-day sales to get a console shelf on regular sale, nothing special, to put our TV on and put our game systems in, it fit our living room nicely, the only problem is the Magnavox receiver is so big it won't fit in the console shelf, and there's no place else to reasonably put it! So all our consoles and our home network are all nicely tucked away in our TV console shelf but our home theater system still isn't set up. :(
