Sharpie Wig Dying?
« on: August 15, 2008, 12:16:08 pm »
Okay. I recently (like, last night) found the PERFECT OMG wig for Miku.
Problem: Duh, it's the wrong friggin' color.
I don't wanna pay oodles of money on dye...it's a long wig.

That's the color I need.
Any advice on sharpie colors?
AND- ...does someone have a good tutorial? I don't want to mess this up.

I'd say this color could work really well. It's called Rain Shower.

I don't know anything about how you actually go about dying from a sharpie, but best of luck!

Well what my friends did when they tried to dye with sharpie is...

They opened up the sharpie and put the ink in a small water squirter and then just squirted the wig with it and let it dry.  o_o; Don't really know how well it worked for them but I remember that is how they did it!

There are two ways of sharpie dyeing.  One is to directly put the pen to the wig fibers and start coloring, very effective but also very time consuming.  The other is to make a homemade dye using sharpie ink and alcohol.  Check out the threads that Shadow posted, they're *incredibly* useful.  To summarize though, you bust open the sharpie, take out the ink filament and mix it with 70% alcohol to make a dye which you can spray directly onto the wig.  After any dyeing you must rinse the wig in tepid water (sometimes with a mild shampoo) to be rid of all the excess dye.  You can style the wig afterward, but use caution when using styling products because they usually consist of an alcohol base and too much can fade/remove the dye.  Hope that helps.   :)

Being a Miku cosplayer myself, I don't want to give away my secrets, but I will say I could never attempt to go the sharpie route with that much hair. I personally do not like the feel of wigs dyed by sharpie, having had the chance to examine one up close, it felt very greasy and unpleasant. Of course, that was the drawn on method.

I don't think it should be greasy....Not with alcohol in the mix. Perhaps the person colored each strand, rather than making the dye mix?
I'm fully capable of pulling it off- And it's the only thing I could imagine I could do. The only wig I found for Miku (aside from what I got now...) is very gross looking- I'm not quite sure why...>_>

How I did my wig, which is just past shoulder length, was take about 6 sharpies, cracked them all open and cut open the inkwells, and put them in some 70% rubbing alcohol. Shook it up a lot, and then dumped it into a bucket, and squeezed excess ink out of the inkwell.
Then I let my wig soak in it overnight, then dry the next day while laying flat. Then rinse until the water runs clear. I used 32oz of the rubbing alcohol and still needed to have used more since the wig didn't entirely get covered and I occasionally had to dunk it and flip it around in the bucket.

Hope that helps you some.

I'd recommend experimenting a bit, and saving your dye after you've dyed the wig, just in case you need to redo it or anything. You might need more alcohol & sharpies too, so have fun with it. <33

Also a good tip is to get some non-alchohol based wig shampoo/conditioner and give the wig a wash after you've got the color you like, so you can get out the excess dye. <3
