21+ anime group
« on: September 19, 2008, 01:24:06 am »
Me and my good friend are both two year veterans of Kumoricon.  Lots of fun at this year as it was last year, but there's something we've been missing.  Both of us agree that there might be a need for a group of older otaku that wish to convene in the beaverton/Aloha/Tigard area.  This is a real basic outline of what we are trying to accomplish; watch anime, drink some beers, talk about said anime, then more beers, then maybe some j pop, some deep fried tofu, then a safe way home.   It's real simple to start, we can get into cosplay, further into culture etc  if the group can expand.  But I'm not really seeing a solid opportunity for a solid 21+ to just hang out and watch anime over some beers.  We have options for locations and days, both at bars and at households.  I'm basically seein what ya'll think and if there's enough of you 21+ otaku out there to make my idea a reality.  Thanks so much.

I'd be interested in meeting up!  However, it's definitely a matter of when and if I already have prior arrangements.

Sounds like me down here in Eugene.  I have been having my Anime Friday for a couple of years now, but getting anyone interested in comming has been hard.  I just turned 45 yesterday, so I suppose I fit the profile of an 21+ otaku.

I posted earlier this week in the plan your own adventure area,  I have the latest Studio Ghibli film 'Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea'  by Hayao Miyazaki.  Downloaded a screening of it and found the English subtitles.  I said, "Who wants to see Ponyo at my place on Friday?"  Not a single reply.  That is just sad.  Made the same offer for the Death Note live action movies.  Nobody interested in that either.  Oh well,  Guess I will just sit around watching Zettai Karen Children, Moribito, and Sailor Moon.

If it didn't take me 2 hours to drive to you, I would consider joining your group.  Good Luck.

I'd be interested in coming. I live in the Salem area though, so I'd need a few weeks notice about hanging out and such. Also, if we hang out late into the night (and if there's alcohol...) I might need to crash at someone's place.

I do like the idea of hanging out with older otaku. No offense to the younglings, but sometimes, you wanna be with people similar to your age group.

See.. stuff like this always intrigues me, but I don't drink.  I'd kind of feel like the odd man out while everyone else is drinking it up and I'm sitting there sipping on some water. ^_^;

Meh, don't worry about not drinking I drink (don't get trashed because hangovers suck) but it's just for chill not to be all macho.

I have a good home theatre setup in my house, it'd be cooler though I think if we found a small bar or someplace that we could use as the venue for anime viewing.

Zilla sake has a monday night anime night but it's in NE portland, I went this week and it was cool (the setup was kinda meh) but I did enjoy it, the owner was nice. It'd be better to find some place closer though.

That would be so extremely bad ass.  I was just telling my friend a couple weeks ago how I can't remember the last time I'd had a Shirley Temple.  She had no idea what I was talking about, so I had to explain it.

Now I want one.  :'(

I have them pretty often and always have the fixing on hand, i dont always have the cherrys tho cuz i dont like them but a shirly temple dosen't look right with out them

for those out side of the know,
ginger ale(or sprite or 7-up)+cherry+grenidine (red syrupy stuff, its the same stuff that makes pink lemonaid pink= shirly temple yay!

grenidine can be found at grocery stores near the drink mixers, but you can get a small bottle for around 3 somthin, where you can get a giant bottle with around 4x as much for 5$ at a liquor store

there are also green hornets, sweetened lime juice+sprite+green food coloring+green cherries
my fiance invented green emrealds= sweetined lime juice+mt dew

I'd be very interested in a 21+ otaku get-together.  I live in the Beaverton area not too far from Aloha.

Don't feel bad about not drinking reppy.  I'm like melchizedek.  I don't drink to the point of getting trashed (or even drunk for that matter) I just enjoy the taste of alcohol.  After having a couple of drinks I settle down to water for the rest of the night.

Never been much of a drinker of alcohol.  I can really taste it, and literally feel the stuff being absorbed through the walls of my mouth, and tongue.  I have found one alcoholic drink type that I can stand.  Bacardi Silver, and Bacardi Silver O3.  The first one taste sort of like sprite with alcohol added.  the other like orange crush with alcohol added.  The O3 seems to be more prevalent.  Anyway i can stand these as is.  The only other kinds of drinks are mixed drinks like Pina coladas and strawberry daiquiris.  Of course these can be rather expensive.  I also like rum and eggnog.  Not much else.  Can't stand normal beers made from hops.  Hate most wines.  I am usually the designated driver for my buddies.   ;)

I don't mind others drinking around me though.  Sometimes that is the best way to see your friends make absolute fools of themselves.    ::)

My offer for Anime Friday at 7:00pm is always open.  Any of you that want to drive to Eugene and visit me.  Free anime all night.  Good video and sound,  environmentally controlled room, interesting company, great selection of stuff to watch.  And you can drink if you want.  I WILL eat your snacks.  ;D

As for crashing at my place.  Maybe, after we get to know you and you have attended a few of my Weekly Anime Friday get togethers, I would consider it, but for the first time?  Kind of stretching my hospitality on that one.

My only complaint about it being at a bar... I drive up from Salem, so if I go, I'll already have to crash at someone's house (especially if I'm buzzed X_X), and so I'd rather just make it a one stop trip for me. And I know I don't have to drink (cause' I don't drink very often anyway), but that's just kinda my issue.

What we need to have is organize a drunken Rock Band party ^_^!

Alright ladies and gentlemen, lets do this thing.  I think we got enough demand to potentially start something.  To the Salem cat I'll have some couch to crash, filling that there are many friends of mine not on the forum that can oblige as well.  I believe we should start this at a house of some kind.  My buddy has ample space for everything but lacks a big tv.  I think this would be a good starting point and from there we can evolve to a bar or other folks in the groups' houses.  What is an ideal day and time for oor first conveneing?  I'm thinking night for sure as I'm sure most of us are night owl's anyway.  To provide ample time for setup and to get the word out further, I'm thinking 2 weeks from now at the soonest.  Suggestions?

Oh and to more specific responses, nobody would have to drink.  I might get buzzed or maybe drunk but there's no neccesity of it.  The point is to have a good time enjoying one our favorite hobbies among others 21+.  The only reason for the age limit is legal issues regarding any presence of alcohol and for the fact that we're rockin a more adult atmosphere.  Sake?  Hell yeah.  Shirley Temple?  Go for it!  Rock Band?  Lets do it.  Cheers!

I didn't, had family visiting but I'd still like to go to a meet up where there are people closer to my own age besides parents that got drug along ;)

Nothing against parents minds you

If we wanted to do rock band, we could meet at PSU, I also have rock band for wii, so my condo is fair game.

Radien and I would love to meet up as well, we live in the Beaverton/Aloha area.

I don't think a meet up happened but Saturday evenings are great.  Probably not the 11th because that is Vallie's b-day celebration and the elections but maybe the 12th since the 13th is a saturday.  Please keep me on your e-mail or PM list for the event!

Ohh it's raining <3

I had to go to a birthday party this weekend...  No one really replied after I suggested meeting up this weekend so I figured it was a dead issue.

Next weekend is elections, plus my birthday as Leashy said.  We have plans.

The weekend after that:

Friday October 17: Fright Town at the Portland Memorial Coliseum around 10 pm.
Saturday October 18: Scream at the Beach:  meet up in Jantzen Beach with us around 9pm.  ^_^

Ok we'll shoot for the 25th.  My buddy just hooked some new anime, can't remember the title but it sounds classy.  Champloo esque but more edgy.  Vague i know, but that's all i got off of him.  As for where I'm open to suggestions.  My place is a possibility and I live on greenburg road right next to washigton square.  I got couch space for 3 and plenty of floor.  Beverage wise I think for the first round we'll stick to some random Japanese beers.  Maybe a bottle of Sake for the group to taste on.  We still have time to organize the evening's activities.  The only problem is television size.  I'm rockin a ****** 27" right now.  Bitchin sound, but ****** tv.  As for liqour fans, definately byo.  I'm not big into liquor, it makes me an *******.  Beer, wine and sake is my M.O.
Now as far as i can envision it, the night will start with introductions, beverage distribution/mixing for you liquor and shirley temple fans, then through on some of episodes of above mentioned anime, sake sampling, snacking and discussion on said anime.  Then we watch more of something else.  Then gaming.  We can do wireless comp gaming if someone's got a hub or bring a system with guitar hero or rockband.
Let me know what ya'll thinkin.

We're gonna try to rearrange this once again.  Halloween weekend is out because I'm playing a show at the 45th street pub and grill.  If you don't have plans, come see my band rock it.  Then on saturday  the 1st i'm going to see Metallica.  For a prelimanary meeting to create in essence a more organized "first" meeting, i would like to meet with a few of you at my apartment this saturday the 25th.  We can get everything organized for the real deal on November the 8th.  I have couch space and I'll get the refreshments and everything.  My phone number, and don't friggin call me at no 8 am, is 503-423-7129.  I'm located in Tigard off of Greenburg road.  I'll give the specifics when any who call me do so.  Thanks again to all of you.  I'm really stoked we have a good number of people to start this thing up.  So yeah, call me up and we'll get this ball rollin.
