First time @ convention, help or suggestions?
« on: April 28, 2005, 01:52:52 pm »
This will be the first convention of any kind that I will be attending, I'm hoping some of you vets might could give me some pointers.  Is it worth it to stay the entire three days of the CON, or is each day pretty much the same thing? And does each day cost extra to attend?  What else should I be prepared for in general?  I appreciate any responce.  I'll be dressing up as Zelda's Link, though a game character rather than anime I'm sure it's still quite common. mabye if someone knows any sites about Link costuming, that'll be cool. Also keeping an eye out for sites about dressing as Ed from "full metal alchemist".  thanx, people. see you there!  8)

Oh, Grasshopper, you have much to learn!  But it's so much fun learning it, it's like play!

Yes, get a three day pass.  It's the best value and different events do happen on different days.  Here is someone that won not only a call cosplay award for Link, but best in show/Costume at the Cosplay contest:

Don't let her intimidate you!  It's one of the best Link costumes one would  see at ANY convention in the world. (No exaggeration!)

For competition, any Anime Character is OK and any Video Game Character (as long as the video game started in Japan).  For just walking around the hall, you never know who you'll find.  You might run into a Storm Trooper, or Harry Potter right next to Sailor Moon.  My favorite costume to wear is a female version of "Strongbad."  There are a few purists that prefer only anime/Japanese video games anywhere, but just about anything pop culture works.  There was a great girl from Kill Bill at Sakura Con!

I forget admission costs off the top of my head, but the earlier you register, the less expensive it is.  Be prepared to be surprised at how many people like the same things you do outside of anime.  "You mean you love Anime with big robots, poodles and Baklava?  Me too!"  (silly example, but I've heard of stranger combinations).   Be prepared for not everyone having the same level of hygiene as you would usually expect (especially by late the second night!).  There's nothing we can do about that!

Hmm, I'm starting to draw a blank. I'm sure others will pipe in and add more to the discussion!

If you like anime, I can almost promise you without a doubt it will be one of the best weekends of your life!   (not counting strange life events or other things beyond the control of the con happening).

many of us have also been involved in the sca (society for creative anachronism), ren faires, and the like :)

my very favorite thing about kumoricon is that we are dedicated to appreciating and incorporating fan-creations. that is to say, for us at kumoricon, anime is more than a spectator sport! if you are into creating your own fan art and/or fan fiction, or appreciating or critiquing that of others, be sure to hop over to the fan creation station! this will be a room dedicated, for the entire con, to celebrating, developing, enhancing, and performing fan creations. hope to see you there!
