Roxas Cosplay Help? c:
« on: January 31, 2009, 02:01:16 pm »
Okay, so for K-Con '09, I'm probably going to go as Roxas or Sasuke (or maybe both, depending on my budget),
but if I go as Roxas, I have some questions that I would love to have answered.

ROXAS :

1) Vivid, sky blue contacts - Where do I get them? What are the price ranges? Is it possible to rent them?

2) Hair - I'm NOT using a wig (I've had some BAD experiences). I'm perfectly fine with keeping my hair short,
but how do I get the spikey thing going with out making it look...plastic-ey? Teasers, hair spray? And should
I bleach my hair, or keep it brown (I can always dye it back when I go back to school)?

3) Shoes - I have NO idea what to do for shoes

4) Costume - I'm a fairly nice sewer, and I have a lovely mom who can sew and an AMAZING sewing teacher,
so the costume making should be easy, but...materials? I get REALLY REALLY warm in cosplay and I'm not
sure what kind of materials to use so I don't over heat. And do you have any tips on staying cool?

All advice is appreciated!

As far as hair goes, I would get it as close to his color as you can. A golden blonde should work.
For spiking it though, I would use gel. I like using got2b spiking gel, but I've used other spiking gels that work too.
Keep in mind that with gel in your hair, it will probably look darker.
I have a golden brown hair color, and with gel it looks dark brown.
I'm sorry if I'm not much help. >//<

Ah, no, you are a great help!
I would have never known that gel could make your hair darker. :<

I think it's because it gives it more of a wet appearence.

As far as contacts go, it depends on where you live. Some states let you go in and just buy them, while in others you have to do a ton of paperwork and wait months before you can walk into a store and buy them.

I don't know Oregon or Washington's stands on this, however.

You could, of course, always buy them from the internet, too. I'm pretty sure you can't rent them.

As for prices, it depends on which brand you get. Also- Do you have light eyes or dark eyes?

I was actually thinking of getting them from here : http://extremesfx.com/
They seem pretty reliable/safe, but I still need to research them more.

And I have hazel eyes (more on the dark side).

Well, remember to get dark-eyed contacts then- If you buy the kind for people with light-eyes, then it'll look really bad.

Twinfools from Fightingdreamerspro cosplay group uses them. Twinfools (who cosplays a number of people.) cosplays as Roxas.  Her deviantart link is right here: http://twinfools.deviantart.com/

And if you want a picture of her roxas cosplay:

As you can see, the products are wonderful and lasting. She's gone to many cons.

shoes - are you willing to "permantly modify" a pair of shoes...what my friend did was hotglue red craft foam to her sneakers. If you want that metal square piece you can get them at joanns in the notions section
Most Recent Cosplays as of June '11:
Ciel Phantomhive (Kuroshitsuji)
Taiwan (APH)
Sakuma Jirou (Inazuma Eleven)

Yes, I would probably buy another cheap pair if I were going to "permanently modify."
And that sounds like a great idea! c: thank you.

About the Washington standards for contacts: You DO need a prescription, with a note from your [eye] doctor, either faxed or mailed[snail, o' course]. If you don't normally wear contacts or glasses, just talk to your doctor about it. >< Not sure about Oregon.

1) Cosplay Lab is a pretty good place to get colored contacts I think. Read the FAQ to find out stuff like how long they last. You'll also need a prescription. I haven't bought any personally, so I dunno too much about the quality *-*

2) Not sure how good this works on real hair since I just do wigs, but to keep spikes up I use Aquanet, spray the ends together and a light coat over the rest (to keep volume as well as keep it up), then use a hairdryer so it dries fast :3 You might need a friend if you're doing it on your own hair. Might be hard to hold it in place and spray/dry at the same time xD

3) You could modify shoes with foam, paint... idk. Or you could start with a pair of slippers, make a foam base, and cover that with canvas (I think that's what's used on shoes idk) and other stuff. Experimenttt~ xD

4) It won't be too hard to stay cool, since you can take off Roxas' jacket :P Cotton twill is a pretty good fabric that can be used for many things. And it's breathable, so it stays cooler. You can get it light or heavy, depending on the part you're going to make. I'd use something more stretchy for the vest though, just because :x Lawl but you don't have to.

Ah, yes. Sakura wigs.
I've ordered from them before, but the shipping was late (by 2 weeks),
and they aren't too good on hiding your hair.
I had a very, VERY difficult time with my last order there, so I really
don't want to take my chances with them again.
