Sony Vegas Questions and Techniques

OK this new thread is for folks from n00bs to old-hands who use or ar learning to use Sony Vegas.

In this case it's n00b=ME. (!)

 I just bought Vegas-7 for my old Win2K box. It looks like I'll be able to figure out transitions and effects with a liffle RTFM on my part.

MY big question is: Now that more raws are coming out in mp4 and the dreaded mkv containers, what's the easiest was to drag-n-drop these file formats into Vegas 7?

And what about freshl;y-ripped VOB files?

I was under the impression that .mp4 was a protected file type used by iTunes for their music. But if Sony Vegas 7 doesn't support it, it doesn't support it. I've got Vegas Pro 8 though, and so far every video file type I've fed into it has shown up in my project media with no problems. It chugs through .flv files even when my computer occasionally skips while playing them.

Don't give up hope though, Eugen! Sony Vegas in every incarnation is an extremely fun program.

Here's a really dumb question, but I wanna ask it anyway.

Is Sony Vegas a program for making AMV's?

It can be. Mostly, it's just a video editing software. You can use it to do anything from cut video clips to watch video clips to make AMVs. But, it's basically the same thing as Windows Movie Maker, but more advanced.
