Dragon Moon Festival
« on: May 03, 2009, 12:10:50 am »
Second update: Unfortunately, the entire remainder of the Dragon Moon Festival events for 2009, after the June event, have been canceled. The Dragon Moon Festival is planning on returning for 2010. Thanks to those who participated and attended in June!

Original post:

(Post update: The July 4-5 event has been canceled. The rest of this post, minus the quote from the original promotional material, has been updated to reflect this.)

Kumoricon will be hosting an exhibitor table, cosplay shows, and artists at the Dragon Moon Festival, an Asian cultural festival held as three weekend events over the summer of 2009.

Find our table on the weekends of June 6-7 and August 1-2. We will be presenting a one-hour cosplay show on the Sundays of June 7 and August 2. (The Dragon Moon Festival will also hold an event on September 5-6, however, Kumoricon will not be there as this overlaps our convention dates.)

Check back for updates as we work out more details and scheduling!

Location:

Dragon Moon Festival
Old Town Chinatown Festival Streets – NW Davis St between NW 4th and 3rd Ave
Portland, OR 97209

Saturday-Sunday, June 6-7, August 1-2, September 5-6
Saturday times: 12noon-10pm
Sunday times: 12noon-6pm
Kumoricon will be present at the June and August events.

Quote
This event began in 2006 as the Under the Autumn Moon Festival and has evolved into a 4-month event in 2009 with celebrations the first weekend of June, July, August and, September, 2009. We've adopted a new name: The Dragon Moon Festival. In ancient Chinese lore when the full moon rose and the dragon constellation was at its highest point in the sky, the moon's bright beams would shine with a special magical light. This was the Dragon Moon.

People would come out during that singular night and bathe themselves in the moonlight. It is said that the old become younger; the infirm find new health; the weary grow energized; and despair turns to joy. The legend says that stories told under the Dragon Moon will never be forgotten.

Has this been going on in Portland for a few years? This is the first time I'd ever heard of the festival so I went to their website and it sounded like it's been going in downtown Portland for a few years. I feel outta the loop...

They've had similar events such as the Harvest Moon Festival but this will be the first to span across four months and is much more extensive than previous years

As part of Kumoricon's participation in the Dragon Moon Festival, we're still looking for cosplay skits and artists to join us! Kumoricon will be running a 1-hour cosplay show on each Sunday, and also will bring 2-4 amateur or professional artists who can sell their work at the festival. This is in addition to the table we'll be hosting all weekend.

We are looking for cosplay skits and artists for all three weekends but feel free to sign up for just one if you'd like to try it first or you can only make one.

This is a great opportunity to sell your art outside the con, especially if weren't able to get a space in the Artist Alley. 40,000 Dragon Moon programs are being distributed, many in advance of the event in the Portland Chinese Times, so this event has a wide audience.

Please email publicity@kumoricon.org if you're interested! We'd love to have you.

They called us Kumorican xD

Oh yeah. :P In most places they spelled it right.

Also, that seems to be the working schedule link now. The image I embedded in my last post no longer works (it is down at their site as well).

So what is kumoricon doing on the stage?

Cosplay and AMVs. Maybe other little things. Bang Bang Neko is doing a skit. We are still looking for additional cosplay groups to help. We most likely can also feature walk-on cosplayers who would just like to show their costume, so if any attendees would like to come to the festival in cosplay, that would be awesome!

What is the Dragon Moon Festival about anyway?

It's basically a large outdoor Asian cultural and arts festival.

Hm~ Maybe for next month's I'll get a group together to try to do something. We have to do a photoshoot in portland sometime soon, so we might be able to stop by for that >:D I don't know what we can organize in under a month though... o~o For skits, can we have prerecorded stuff or...?

Or are there mics that won't be too hard to handle, or at the least, are wireless?

I might do a walk-on this time, though I'm not sure what I could do... with that... oUo;

I believe they have the equipment to play audio (and video), I am checking to confirm that. Provided they do, I think pre-recorded would be excellent, as it much improves the ability for the entire audience to hear, especially since this is outdoors.

We might try to have a large cosplay gathering at the August event, and maybe even some news coverage.

There continue to be spaces left for artists who would like a table. Also if you are unable to staff a table for the weekend, Kumoricon can arrange to display and sell copies of your work directly at the Kumoricon table and pass on the proceeds to you. Please contact us at publicity@kumoricon.org to work out the details for this.

Our main stage events run 4pm to 6pm (it was extended one hour because another group backed out). Kumoricon attendees and cosplayers, this would be a great gathering time! Maybe we can do on-stage photos.

I just received notice of an important schedule change:

The July 4-5 weekend event has been canceled, but the August and September events will continue.

Quote
After careful consideration, the Dragon Moon Festival Committee has decided to cancel the July Dragon Moon Festival. We've realized that even with your generous support our target audience of families and those interested in food, culture and entertainment have fewer resources this year and we are shifting our plans to align with the economic realities of Oregonians this summer. For us that means we should not compete with other city wide events including local back yard parties and the Waterfront Blues Festival held during the celebratory July 4th holiday.

To this end – our next Dragon Moon Festival will be on August 1st and 2nd. By doing so, we will be able to position the festival for greater success. We'll see you in August!
