my friend is in school in hokaiddo japan and this was outside her back door

and she states
"Any armature entomologist out there who can reassure me that this is not a Pan's Labyrinth-style fairy? It's gray with double freaking bat wings, NO FREAKING FACE and it's the size of my freaking hand. It's sitting right outside my dorm room door and I'm afraid to go out there in case I might anger it."

any ideas?

Moths can get really big. Search "Goliath Moth" to see the point. Then again, that isn't a goliath moth. Hm...

Yeah, I think it's a moth too, because Bat's don't look like that. xD
Um, I don't know what kind it is though..

it's a decent sized moth, what species, I don't know... but if you look at the body and detail, you can tell it's not a mammal, but a bug of some kind do to the fact it look's like it has an exo skeleton and the wings look like moth wings.

It looks like a sphinx moth, but I'm not sure which species...

This one looks pretty similar, but it's also really different. o-o

I see how you can mistake it for a bat or something *_*

The one in the pic has about a 5.5in wingspan *_* But it was found in Florida, so I'm not sure if it's the same ><

At least not all moths are creepy~ :D

I just tried googling up Japanese moths, but really couldn't get anywhere.

Put up a poll, and ask if it's a moth.

Whatever it is, I love it and want one as a pet. The more bizarre a creature, the more undiscovered.....the more I'll heart them. ^_^

Looks cool to me, haha, but no, I've got no clue what it is.

If it were from Pan's Labyrinth, tell your friend to beware flabby pale dudes with eyes in their hands. Don't eat stranger's food!

As a general rule of thumb, I won't eat much of anything after it's touched someone's eyeballs.
