A Little Help for an Otaku Out-of-the-Loop?

Hey guys (hope this is in the right place!)

So it's been about 8 years since I was really really into anime.  I've kept up a bit, clearly, and love kumoricon and cosplaying oh-so-much!  However, I want to try to catch up on some of the shows I've missed.  So, I'm looking for the help of you nice people!  I'm trying to make a list of the greatest shows from the last 6ish years, any recommendations?

Feel free to list the obvious, it'll help anyway.

Good all around shows:

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu / Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi
Lucky Star
Azumanga Daioh
Pani Poni Dash (Like Azumanga, but probably drug induced)
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Macross Frontier (I'm not a Macross fan, but I liked this)

Just ones off the top of my head.

Haruhi season 2 is out in japan now (see the first one if you haven't yet)
Natsu no Arashi is really good too!
Sora wo kakeru Shoujo is also amazing

I second Azumanga Daioh, and add a few others:

- Le Chevalier D'Eon (Mind-bogglingly brilliant historical fiction/fantasy/horror...and the animation style can only be called "Super-Anime"...watch it and you'll understand, haha)
- Ninja Nonsense (aka Ninin ga Shinobuden - Consistently funny and heartwarming hijinks of a ninja trainee and her academy)
- Speed Grapher (Awesomely original supernatural thriller with some great character development and visual artistry)
- Claymore (Monsters. Swords. Contemplation over what makes a man and what makes a monster. The art of this anime is so gorgeous, every frame is a masterpiece. Perfect combination of art and action, beauty and brutality.)

This is a start, since I can't recall others at the moment.

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys!  If it helps, I'm a big fan of Utena, Ouran, pretty much anything by Clamp (I'm caught up on that front, don't worry), Peach Girl...and a bunch of others I can't remember :P

If you like clamp check out Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles
I might also recommend Soul Eater as it seems to be gaining quite a lot of popularity.

D.Gray-Man, though I must ask you to read it instead of watching it.

Also, read it with an imagination. If you do it all makes much more sense, especially when you start forming your own conspiracy theories.

Lucky Star (described as the Seinfeld of anime)
Sayounara Zetsubou Sensei (a suicidal teacher teaching a class of students with major quirks)
Bakemonogatari (looks promising at least, haven't seen it)
Darker than Black
Soul Eater
Obar Star Racers (personal fav)
Bamboo Blade (an anime about kendo, looks promising)
K-ON (a group of girls form a light rock band)
Lovely Complex (or Love Con) (high school romance/comedy)
Gankutsu (anime meets the Count of Monte Cristo, visually stunning)

You'll have to watch it and see, but it's truly amazing.
It's 13 episodes with three OVAs so there's 16 total, and did I mention it was amazing?

Mobile Suit Gundam 00... Gotta watch that one. Great series! 'Course, I might be a bit partial, seeing as I am a Gundam fanatic. :P
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo is another great series. I love it.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, as already mentioned, I highly recommend checking out.
Solty Rei... It's not too popular, but I think it was a great series. Lots of action and suspense, but it's also very sweet and loving.
Kaleido Star... C'mon, this series was amazing! It's one of my favorites, and something very different from what you usually see in anime.
Planetes, this is a series that you'll either like or hate. I, obviously, liked it. While it's completely sci-fi it is a very "real" story that often makes you think.

my main suggestions are pretty much always the same

elfen lied: a series that comes close to perfect, but denies you the closure that you oh so desperately want

Solty rei: a perfect series with a range of emotions and an amazing story line

Vandread: another perfect series that grabs your attention with close observations of human interaction

Claymore: From what i have seen, it is a great series for the beginning anime watcher. It contains a lot of the things that people come to anime to see. Good looking girls, unbelievable twists, artistic views, a range of emotions, monsters, and great characters.

Bokusatsu Tenshi Doku-Dokurochan: a funny, perverted, somewhat adorable series, that is great for people who are into the comedy side of anime.

Basilisk: Like Ninja Scroll meets Romeo and Juliet. This series is one of the best i have seen, having that range of emotions that everyone loves, mindless killers, hilarious characters, and love.

Berserk: A completely human series that goes haywire. War, Violence, Love, and Giant Swords. This anime has enough packed into 24 episodes to please almost any anime lover.

Rozen Maiden: haven't watched enough of it to clearly judge, but what i have seen has been amazing. a psychological thriller, involving dolls that fly around in suit cases. a very unique and interesting series.


also, i recently started watching baccano, and what i have seen was pretty good. not my favorite, but its definitely a good attention grabber.

Soul Eater- Humans partner with other Humans that turn into weapons that need to protect Death City from the Demon God... thing o3o (Its has good animation, and fun characters)
Kuroshitsuji- A kid with an eye patch who has a demon for a butler (Has interesting plot)
Pandora Hearts- A kid who is told his Sin is existing and next thing he knows is that hes 10 years in the future... and meets a girl in the search of her memories... (I dont even know how to sum up this one but its good D:) (Very good and interesting plot. although the animation quality isnt the best)
Higurashi- A boy moves to a new Town. When he finds out about the myserious murders and disappearances that happen every year, are his new friends as innocent as they seem (very good if you can handle violence and horror but not the greatest animation)
Umineko- A family Reunion on an island but the grandfather is obsessed with summoning a witch soon people start dieing. and Battler tries to prove this is not a Witches doing. (Once again if you can stand Violence and gore. But not like Higurashi eevn though it is made by the same people. This is about Logic)
