Aliens vs. Predator
« on: February 25, 2010, 07:58:26 pm »
Anybody check out the new console version, released within the last few weeks?

I picked it up, being a fan of the PC games from some-odd years ago. It's really fun.. I think they tweaked gameplay, and make it quite awesome for consoles. And I think the online gameplay is pretty nice too.. even if it is just a battle insta-kill moves and attack-strafe-attack

I Strongly Disagree.

This game was a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT.
To start off it's extremely watered down and simplified compared to the original games on PC. (AVP, AVP2) There are some pretty extreme balancing issues on top of that aswell. My first big complaint was with the overall lack of weapons for both Predator and Marine. Then the weapons you do get are either too weak or broken to be very usefull. The Single player was absolute garbage, script heavy, extremely short, terribly written, paced and put together.

I hated this game.

They had a pretty good format with the original 2, if anything they should be remaking/re-releasing those.

No offense, but I'm really amused about the contradictions and non-sense of that review.

First, did you really ever believe Aliens, Predators, and Marines would be perfectly balanced? Particularly for the first game of the series, on consoles? And prior to any patches, updates, or DLC?

Second, lack off weapons. Sure.. compared to the PC games, which were generic. This game, if you couldn't tell by the storyline, is based slightly more around the movies, with various game adaptations like all games based on movies. Again.. first game of it's kind for consoles, less than 2 weeks after it's released.. DLC much? Sequel much? If you expected this to have the weapon variety of Modern Warfare 2, I pity you.

Third, "too weak or broken to be very usefull". Seriously? How can any weapon be too broken to be useful? Wouldn't the term broken imply overpowered, and therefore, the epitome of useful?

Forth, are you comparing the 'garbage' storyline to the original AvP games? Which had virtually no story in their storyline, and basically a linear path involving killing enemies?

And finally.. did you really expect something not 'watered down'? I mean, could you really expect something more advanced when comparing old PC games with a keyboard of controls, to a console game with 10 buttons, 2 joysticks, and a D-pad?

In the end, all I have to say is.. if you bought the game and hated it, sucks for you. I consider the money well spent.

No I was not expecting perfection, especially not from an Alien Vs Predator game. I was however hoping for something on par with if not better then the first 2 AvP games. Its not the first AvP game to come out, its the first one they've done on console yes, but that's no reason to why it can't be as good.

First, did you really ever believe Aliens, Predators, and Marines would be perfectly balanced? Particularly for the first game of the series, on consoles? And prior to any patches, updates, or DLC?

Yeah, a lot of the balancing issue can probably be patched, but that's not going to fix the overall poor gameplay.

Second, lack off weapons. Sure.. compared to the PC games, which were generic.

No I didn't expect to get the amount of weapons available in MW2.

Yeah, lack of weapons. Your arsenal as predator has not only been stripped down to 4 weapons, the emphasis is now on the poorly done melee combat. To use anything other then your claws to kill the aliens proves to be a hassle and for the most part its a lot easier to just run around using executions on everything else. The weapons take a real backseat and the majority of the time aren't needed at all.

With the marine it wasn't so much a complete lack of weapons as it was how lame and weak they all felt . Upon finally getting a hold of the Pulse Rifle, I think back to how it was your primary weapon in the other games and how good it was. I figure I'm now good to go. WRONG! Felt like I was shooting an Airsoft gun, 30+ rounds or so into the 99 round clip and it has still failed to kill the alien running at me. I shouldn't Have to dump more then a 3rd of the clip into any one alien.

Aside from lacking even a decent variety of weapons (especially with the predator) The weapons you are provided with aren't even all that fun to use, and are poorly done. If you're not going to put very many weapons into a game, make the ones you do put in fun and enjoyable to use.

This game, if you couldn't tell by the storyline, is based slightly more around the movies, with various game adaptations like all games based on movies.

WAT.
Are you saying the Story/Campaign is based more around the crappy AvP movies?? The movies that take place in present day, on earth, with no space marines. What are you trying to say with this??

Wasn't really talking about the storyline. I was comparing the garbage single player campaign to that of the original games (Avp2 in particular). While the original 2 games weren't exactly known for their mind blowing storyline, they were better written, better paced, and more enjoyable to play through. The environments and level design were also done better.

And finally.. did you really expect something not 'watered down'? I mean, could you really expect something more advanced when comparing old PC games with a keyboard of controls, to a console game with 10 buttons, 2 joysticks, and a D-pad?

Are you kidding me on this? As a much younger kid, I was very easily able to map out the controls to my Logitech controller, which at the time I preferred over keyboard and mouse. A controller which couldn't of had any more buttons or been any more sophisticated to that of a 360 or PS3 controller.

In the end, all I have to say is.. if you bought the game and hated it, sucks for you. I consider the money well spent.

As much as I really wanted the game to be good, I had very little faith in it to began with.
Was a Free rental.

Being an owner of the original AVP (thanks to Steam), I have to agree with Agent47; there virtually is no story in the original, and basically breaks down to just going from point A to point B a lot of the time, with a lot of enimies to kill along the way. Not to mention the simple fact that each campaign only had five full fledged missions (wouldn't be surprised if it was the same in this one).
And after reading these reviews, I have to say that Koga appears to feel like this game didn't meet his EXACT fanboy expectations. And to be honest, it sounds like a highly opinionated fanboy rant. Were you expecting Bioshock levels of gameplay? I certainly am not.

But me thinks you may be looking at the original AVP through the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia.

I look forward to playing this game after updates come out for it, hopefully on a computer that can support it. My personal main reason is the improved AI. More importantly, the ability as a Predator to lure away Marines from the main group with the mimic function, and then pick them off one by one. Because the AI TEN YEARS AGO, was CRAP.

Dumbass, he's refering to the respective Aliens and Predator movies, not the AVP movies; you're obviously in fanboy rant mode right now.

Let me make this clear, as disappointing as I found this game, I never really had high expectations for it to began with.

But me thinks you may be looking at the original AVP through the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia.

Yeah, It probably doesn't help that my opinion towards this game is slightly skewed by the nostalgia I hold for the first 2 games, but overall I wasn't able to find myself enjoying this one. The majority of the comparisons I'm making are coming from the 2nd AvP game.

Yeah, I realize that.
The point I was driving at with this, was that if he's not refering to the actual AvP movies, what is he trying to say? How is this game based any more off the movies then the other 2?

Just sharing my thoughts, didn't really intend for anything to come off as a rant.
