I also agree. Don't get me wrong, I like disney and KH, but having the ball focus on a single series, or something of  the like, kinda puts me off of going. People might not even like the series, or know what it's about, and may not want to go. The theme should be more mainstream, something all-around that  people would want to go to. Something like just a simple formal, and then the night would play its self out. You could have characters from many different series be the 'hosts' of the ball- they don't have to be from the same series, and that way I think more people would enjoy it, and it would capture a  wider range of people to attend.
Kumori-con 2013 cosplay plans:
Day zero: Sollux Captor
Day one: Meenah peixes
Day two: Fem! Grand highblood.
Day three: We leave at about 1:30 pm, and it's a long drive home, so no cosplay on day three. Too much make up to take on and off, haha.

Well, when you put it like that... I get that calling it a Kingdom Hearts Masquerade or a Sailor Moon Masquerade or something like that might make it seem like you have to know about the series or dress in that fashion, but you might get the same idea if it was called something like the Anime Hunters Masquerade. Now, if it were changed to something like "the Masquerade Ball hosted by the (insert group name here)," then people would see that it was just a regular masquerade ball, but that it was going to be hosted by a certain group that has a certain theme (like the Kingdom Hearts group, for example) and that might have a special little intro to perform for the attendees. I think that would lessen the number of people who would be discouraged to go because they aren't familiar with the series being associated with the event.

(This might need revising later, as I was typing this while watching a new episode of a show, heh.)

@Hawk: They did that with the ball that the Ouran Highschool Hostclub hosted and I heard from a few people that they didn't go because they thought it was just nothing but Ouran. I think a simple title like "KumoriBall" or "Masquerade Ball" or something like that would be fine . Nothing to theme-like, I guess?

Even saying hosted by Disney or kingdom hearts might scare some away in some instances. If someone is cosplaying as either of those and does not want to host then they avoid the ball. Just a consideration and certainly not as big of a consideration as naming it the "Disney Ball" or something along those lines.

But what I'm saying about the group name is that it's just the name of the group. I mean, if it were hosted by the Anime Hunters, for example, you wouldn't expect people to think they need to come dressed like Zach and Dane, right? (I know that's a bit of an extreme example, but it helps demonstrate my point.)

I know what you mean and in that case, come up with a group name that is distinguishable. :)

The name of an anime/video game is different than the name of a popular group, though.

I like the idea of a Masquerade with "hosts" like when the Ouran Host Club did it (I volunteered as an official host that night) and I think it would be really cool to have the Hetalia characters or any anime characters as hosting it since it IS an anime convention after all. People don't have to know the anime to enjoy the masquerade, you can even put a disclaimer like, "Don't know the hosts? That's okay, come enjoy dancing the night away anyway!" Or something in the pocket guide/program book ... It's not like the ball is centered around the anime that's hosting it. They'd just do a couple small gimmicks related to their anime to make it interesting to those who have seen the anime, but a gimmick where people can participate nonetheless if they know the anime or not... like finding Honey-Sempai's bunny and winning a dance. You didn't have to know the anime to find the bunny.

However if something is done like this though, or even hosts in general, there should be pre-con meetings to figure out what the hosts are going to do and dancing. That was the problem with the Ouran Hosts, is we only got to meet about an hour before the thing started to collaborate. Luckily we really only needed to learn the Waltz, pretty simple, the rest of the songs we just kind of danced to with others. Also the general hosts were kind of left out of the loop when it came to what stunts the main character hosts were going to pull. There should also be  alot of pre-relations with convention staff. It was the first time it was done so we kept having to stop the dance to make announcements for staff, like about wearing shoes, fire codes, etc when all that should have been taken care of to begin with. And there were problems with some hosts getting down to the main events room before the event started as well, already cutting into the small practice time we had. I had to "argue" for a while with a Yoojimbo that I was a volunteer for the dance and I needed to get past the line and down into the event room to practice. Finally someone came to my rescue and told them they were going down as well to help and just to let me by, luckily they were staff. xD In fact, I believe that was you Washougal_Otaku. xD

Personally I'd like a masquerade one night, rave the next. Or the rave first, then the masquerade. Maybe have a panel before the masquerade to learn some basic dance? I would imagine many others would like the chance to brush up, go through an hour long crash course or such.
I agree with the hosting bit; Anyone else dressed as people from that series might feel like they might be approached by many people thinking they're hosting. I would personally find it interesting if the hosts were dressed as various incarnations of Kumori-tan.

I really would only attend a masquerade if it didn't have a set series of hosts... While that'd be cool and all, if it had the description or title say that it was a certain series, then I'd probably not go. With the pure assumption it's being put on much like the panels are, and isn't a 'main event' like the Raves are.

I'm not saying don't have hosts of a certain series, but also don't limit yourself to just that. If it's a theme of any kind, center the music around the theme. Not the hosts. That could be too demanding for those who'd have to cosplay those characters, and for anyone else who's cosplaying them- they would possibly get mistaken as one of the hosts, for example.
I mean, it's already a big undertaking to have a dance at all, let alone the 'requirements' for the masq balls. Why do you want to make it more chaotic? It'd be cool, yes. But you'd have to have a lot of people able to figure out ways to distinguish the hosts from the regular cosplayers, if it is from a series, and have all the hosts be in that similar style... It just seems too much like a hassle in my opinion. Which could result in the ball being poorly conducted, and thus wouldn't get people wanting to go, or stay to enjoy it.

A theme of 90's anime music would be cool :) If it had a title like "kumoriball" or "masquerade", something very simple like that, then I'd be much more likely to go.

Throwing this out there, if a staff member sees this, I'd love to get in on discussions about the masquerade/ball. I've got some ideas, and would like to hear others.

^ The best thing to do is to apply to run the ball yourself, or meet up with someone who has made a submission or plans to.  You'd use the same form for panel submissions in order to apply to run the ball.

Please bring back the ball.  I guess I just didn't understand the reason that I got for no ball.  (there was no space for it)  Instead of 2 raves couldn't one have been a ball instead.

Do we really need to sign up to run the ball?  how would we even do that?  not many people have the music equipment needed to do an event like this.

Are there any ideas out there?  I tried to have an impromptu ball in the park last year but I ran into problems cause it would have cost a lot of money to get this in the park and the park was already in use by other organizations.  :(

Please bring back the ball.  I missed it a lot last year.   :'(

My cosplay's going to be in a dress, so I really hope I'll be able to make it to the ball this year if there is one :-B
Good News and Bad News.
Bad news is I can't go to Kumoricon the whole weekend because of costs and drivers ed.

GOOD NEWS is that if I can raise enough money I can go for Saturday all day as Espurr (Pokemon X/Y)
Hope to see you all then! <3
