Summer Pocky Flavors
« on: May 09, 2006, 05:49:40 pm »
Yes that's right, three new flavors of pocky have hit the scene fro a limited time!

Pine Cream (pineapple) is making its debut alongside old favorite Coconut.
http://www.glico.co.jp/pocky/summer/index.htm

The bigger news (literally bigger) is that there are two summer flavors of Decorer Pocky, the pocky built like a decoration cake.
Berry and Lemon promise sweet and sour flavor for pocky fans!
http://www.glico.co.jp/pocky/decorer/intro.htm

I'll be heading down to Uwajimaya tonight to get some for the Club. i may not be able to leave any for the rest of you though!

So I got over to Uwajimaya last night and as I expected, there was a giant display of Green Tea pocky still. So I started stocking up for the May meeting at the hotel. I stroll down the aisle to find the new flavours and there it is, Pine Cream Pocky. I grab a couple boxes and try to find the Berry and Lemon Decorer but no luck. They didn't get any in. I picked up a box of the awesome Blueberry Fran (another brand of pocky known for mousse like thickness) that superjaz brought to one of the first meetings. I also found a box whose lable mearly said "moose choco murasaki". I looked over the ingredients for a clue and the only thing I noticed that stood out was sweet potatoes and the coloring. I really have no clue what this flavor is but the box is elegant, textured, and looks like a fancy kimono pattern. I have dubbed it Murasaki Pocky for now. Final pocky related note; when I had gotten the new flavors it was time for me to grab the staples. Chocoloate, Men's and Strawberry Chunk. However when I looked I found no Strawberry!

Sure there was the GIANT strawberry (which is always down the aisle for some reason) and the Hello Kitty brand, but now Glico strawberry chunk, or even strawberry creme! This has happened before, evil stockboys trying to stash some of their favorite flavor. So I kneel down and start looking over the display to read the boxes in the back and sure enough, behind some weird flavor of Pretz, there's the carton of Strawberry Chunk Pocky.  It's things like this that make my Pocky shopping an adventure.

So at the May meeting I'll bring the Murasaki and Pineapple for people to try, as well as plenty of Green Tea and the regular flavors.

Note to Pocky Club members, we have an assignment! I'll notify of the job by the mailing list when I have the final details.

Awwww, I really wish they'd had Lemon at Uwajimaya. Sorry guys.

The Pine Cream has little bits of pinapple pulp in it though! It's yummy!

No, she was not. She was a girl I was friends with but we ended up not getting along, thus we ended our friendship.

WHOA dude!
You're right, Neko does need to settle down but no need to close a post for that. Sheesh.

And no Von, I don't think she was a member of the PLF.
When Neko says ex-member though she's probably right. I haven't heard anything from those guys since the convention.

Neko, I got about 25 bucks worth of Pocky, total.

Remember, i'm working on making a suit of Pocky Armor. I need all the boxes I can get. BTW, anyone know a good pattern/diagram for how samurai armor is made? i'm trying to figure out a good method for linking the boxes and that came to mind.

Well if you'd like to meet up and trade costume tips we'll be at the May meeting. I'm trying to come up with some designs for Pocky Club uniforms (something small that can be worn over other costumes, like a vest) and i'm sure that you'd be a great deal of help.

This site looks great, just the sort of thing I need to practice.
http://www.armourarchive.org/patterns
Now if only there was a site giving advice for use with cardboard instead of steel. Heh

For the Samurai I found this through a series of SCA-Japan links
http://www.sengokudaimyo.com/katchu/katchu.html

I might just have enough resources to start my project, I just need to decide whether I want to go medievil or samurai. If I design samurai style armor it'll be more in keeping with the convention and I always have the option of creating a Gundam head-helmet!

I was going to say you realy want to reenfoce all the holes you put in the pocky boxes and thread the lace through even so far and squars of plastic  cut to fit snugly in the box and have matching holes in it

Well, I thought of that but I want to make sure that our uniforms are in no way like those of the Yojimbo. If the Yojimbo are using sashes this year we want to coordinate differently. If they choose something other than red then we'll be set.

Maybe we could make a bunch of white bands with big red logos.....

Vondan- I was indeed planning on using the Giant Pocky boxes that I have as shoulder panels that would stick out to the sides.

What kind of plastic would you suggest for the holes? I want whatever reinforcement I use to just be on the back of the box panel (I'm cuttiong the boxes flat, so they'll be like tiles) so that the boxe's art is fully displayed. I suppose if I overlap the lacing properly it won't matter but I still wouldn't really know what would be best for that and how best to attach it. Hot glue? Staples?

The first big step, before I start sizing and lacing the plates, is figuring out what I'm going to use ase a base or a framework undernaeath it all. I'm going to need some shirt or shoulder mounting to hang the actual armor from. Maybe I can just use some corrugated box from a Pocky shipment for the base.

Tom, so I had an idea about your pocky armor.  I am not sure if it would work but what if you took one of those suits of armor things that hockey players wear under their uniforms and connected all of the boxes to that?  I mean it could at least help make it sturdy and maybe easy to take on and off

A full set of pads is really expensive (to me) and it'be super bulky. If I can find some used stuff it might be a pretty easy thing to do though. Thanks for the suggestion!

I was thinking of the plastic like from 5 gallon plastic buckets.  It would be easy to make them from the sides of the square buckets but if you cut the round ones into pieces and were careful about placement they could work or you can flatten out sections with a heat gun.  Cut the squares of plastic maybe an 8th of an inch smaller than the flattened pocky box then glue them together with contact cement and punch a hole in each corner.  When all the "plates" are laced together it should hold up on it's own.  They make Armour to fight in the sca from squares of plastic laced together.   On that Armour archive research the Wispy coat of plates or COP.  Although it’s a European style think of ways you can use that method to make a Japanese looking coat of plates.  And don’t for get the Dasho with a Pockytana and Pockyzashi

Hmmm, so basically I'd get a suit of plastic armor and then glue the pocky boxes to the plates? That sounds easiest so far. Especially since I could probably order a set of armor like that from someone online.

Funny you should mention the Pocky Daisho. I've already got two giant Pocky. One is a little over a foot long so it could serve as a Pockyzashi. The other one is far too big for Pockytana though, it's more of a Pocky-Dachi. I do hope to get a Pockytana from a friend of mine once he's done moving. I already have the materials for it he just hasn't had time. I'm also planning on comissioning him to make a strawberry chunk Pocky tetsubo.

I'll probably end up putting grommets on the pocky box panels I use in the armor. Once I get the breastplate/skirting finished the gauntlets and shin guards should be pretty easy to pull together. I just need to buy more giant Pocky. I only have three of those boxes right now.

Hmmmmm.... All Pocky is individually packaged in plastic within the box, I can always throw the actual pocky in a tupperware container when I buy more boxes. Then I can just buy a ton of it and save it for the next meeting while I use the boxes!
I can't believe I just thought of that!

Even if you buy a suit of plastic Armour you still need to take it apart and glue on the pocky boxes.   Better to buy a lot of plastic plates or scales pre cut then you only have to cut out a few more for the odd shapes.  And the plastic panels and scales made for SCA combat are from the 50 gallon drums twice as thick and  heavy as plastic from a 5 gallon bucket.

Dont worry about the pockychucks, all I can say is it's covered.  Some one ask me at the Next meeting in Eugene.   With the Strawberry chunk Pocky tetsubo remeber the old saying  "Tetsubo no Oni".

Grommets are a good idea, the holes is are ware the wear will be, and most grommets over size 2 should fit though both the layers of Pocky box and bucket plastic

I have no idea what the size of a standard pocky box is look around this site again

http://www.sengokudaimyo.com/katchu/katchu.html

and pick a pattern ware the scales or plates are close to the average pocky box size.  I'm thinking the Haramaki Dô

Oh my god......... the sashimono. I can't believe I forgot that. Having one of those with a giant Pocky box on it would instantly assure my role as Pocky shogun. I think if I have that and a good helmet then the Pocky plates themselves could be pretty shabby.

The grommets and the grommet set tool, those would probably be the things I need the most. The harder stuff I can probably get from friends, the plastic and tools to shape it. How tricky is it to find grommet stuff? Do they have it at regular stores (as in fabric, building supply, etc..) or would I have to special order them (from you, a sailing store, an armorer, etc...)?

Oh, and back on the subject of Summer Pocky Flavors!
Remember Reverse Pocky? Well it seems that they have a new product called Poare. from the packaging it looks like it's reverse pocky but it has a wheat outside and chocolate inside. This will be thoroughly tested by Pocky Club at the meeting this afternoon.

Yes you cant forget to be sassy.  I think the armour made from the plasic covered in pocky boxes and red lacing will come out well and last. you will just need to replace some of the boxes ever convention

A Leather supply or upholstery store will have them.   They come two ways.   High-end setters from Osborne that go for as much as $50 for just the tool.  Mid level ones by Osborne that are $20 with some grommets.  Fabric stores have crap ones for under $5 that are made from aluminum that if I have them I just give away.  The leather store across the street has a bunch of the high-end setters on clearance for $25 and I can always get the mid level one for under $15.   Your best bet is to go to that Von @$$hole leather guy in Eugene and use his Merchants discount. He might also have some plastic buckets and bamboo for the sashimono.  Also check behind your local bakery, there is a Mexican bakery near my shop that tosses out like 10 buckets a day but they are full of egg batter or jelly filling remnants.

I saw the pine cream ones at Uwajimaya today but sadly didn't have money to spend on pocky.  They sound wonderfully yummy though!

...it was much appreciated.  I also took your idea and posted an actual photo of myself. And here is my idea for Pocky-armor:

Allright!
We had a pocky box like that at Kumoricon last year and we made sure to get lots of pictures with her.

Von, I am buying some furniture right now but I will definitely be making a move on this gear in a couple weeks when the next paycheck comes in. I may have to visit some Events to make some transactions.
