I'm guessing you haven't been to the past couple of Kumoricons. ^_^

I've actually cosplayed Harry Potter Characters for 2 years now.  At KCon '05 I was Prof. Lupin (non-movie version) and at KCon '06 and Sakuracon '07 I was Tom Riddle complete with Snake, wand, and snake fang in journal.
Plus there were other times I've seen Harry's and other random Hogwart students.

Only once did I receive the "Harry Potter isn't Anime" comment (SakuraCon) but it only sounded like they wanted a reaction out of me so I wouldn't worry about it.

I went to the last Kumoricon and the last Sakura Con, I love you by the way Tom Riddle, XD I saw you at Kumoricon and it was my first anime convention so I was like "Yay!! Harry Potter!!!" Well me and my friend are most likely going as Pansy Parkinson and Hermione Granger just for fun, are you going as a Harry Potter Character this year?? If you go as Tom Riddle I will be your loyal Death Eater 8D.

Unfortunately no, not this year.  In fact I'm not even going to be able to attend this year.  I'm going to grad. school in Hawaii and school starts in mid-August.

Negima is totally right. We've had Harry Potter cosplay every year!

Kumoricon people are generally very nice about copsplayers who "aren't anime". I've gotten no problems for my weirds non-anime characters (such as Steve the Pirate from Dodgeball).

There's a couple of bad apples on our tree but they should be shunnnnnned and not taken to candy mountain.

Harry Potter characters are cheap cosplay, recognizable, and fun!

last year we had a female Dent Arthur Dent, complete with towel, and she even got on the dating game. As I recall, every one of her answers had something to do with the Hitchhikers guide. I wouldn't worry.

I have a Hufflepuff student costume lurking around my box that I wore at last years movie premiere, but I'm going to be in New York for the opening of movie five. =( I am greatly saddened.

But no, you won't be shunned for HP cosplay =) I'd take your picture for sure.

On a less related note...

Yesterday I went to the HP cosplaying band The Remus Lupines. Many in the audience were cosplaying. It was fun

How do they compare to the bands Harry and the Potters or Draco and the Malfoys?
(some people claim they're the same musicians in different costumes but we know that's impossible don't we?)

I 've only heard "Voldemort can't Stop the Rock" but I thought it was pretty good.
