I have been having this thought as of late. With the anime viewing schedual, I was thinking of a block at some point that could be dedicated to older anime. Sure the new stuff is pretty and better drawn, but some of the old stuff is good to, and the people new to anime don't know what their missing. Some suggestions for it that I have are Dominion Tank Police (not New Dominion) and/or Robotech and/or Cyber City Oedo 808. What does everyone else think?

Dominion Tank Police & Robotech would be nice.

I'd also like to suggest Project A-ko, Barefoot Gen, & ... ah, litter box! I can't remember the name of it! I'll do a little dirt digging to find out what I'm thinking of.

I remember seeing this anime on Sci-Fi channel a long time ago. I was really young at the time; possibly 4th or 5th grade. Maybe even younger! All I remember is it was in the desert and had characters that were often over the top with the facial expressions and stuff like that. I realize that is the exact opposite of the word "descriptive". If it helps, I think I remember there being guns, too.

Like I said, at the time, I was young and I wasn't too observant. To this day, only animes I can recall seeing in their entirety on Sci-Fi were Lily Cat, Akira, Tenchi Muyo Daughter of Darkness (heh, taped it on VHS) and .. I can't remember any more. I know I would catch parts of Galaxy Express and Project A-Ko.. maybe a few others. I think Sci-Fi was kind of on and off with the Saturday Night Anime.. or maybe we didn't have cable for a few years.. I forget. ^_^;;

Oh, Galaxy Express was one of my favorites. There are alot of good ones, like The Guyver, The Gun Smith Cats, the first anime I ever watched ever was Ninja Scroll (that one is a bit brutal and contains very adult themes. In retrospect that was a pretty bad introduction to anime at age 10 Hahaha.)

P.S. Where can you find Devil Man? I can only ever find Devil Lady.

They were indeed, until they finally dropped it from their lineup. But if it hadn't been for Sci-Fi showing what it did I wouldn't have ended up with all of the "Robot Carnival" cels above my desk now (That also happens to be my personal favorite "old school-ish" anime, though it's not really that old.).

As for the idea of an old-school block... I could be wrong, but isn't one of the problems with that licensing? I can't say that I know what I'm talking about, but I was under the impression that you weren't supposed to show things that are licensed without permission from the companies that own them here in the US. *shrugs*

Funny. That was about the same age I saw Devil Man. Age 10. But I'd already seen Vampire Hunter D and Akira like a year or two before that, sooo.. Oh, and "Bikini Carwash".. haha.. ^_^;; Dunno where you'd find it though. I have a copy (DVD) but it's dub only. I tried downloading the subtitled version once but ... it was broken about half way through and missing a huge chunk of the second episode.

And unfortunately I've only ever seen Gunsmith Cats dub.. on VHS. Still have it. It had both episodes of the OVA whereas the subtitled versions were like $30 each and only had 1 episode.. soooo.... And Ninja Scroll was good for what it was.. a movie about people killing each other in brutal fashion. Don't try to make it anything else, you'll just end up hurt!

The only thing of Devilman that's licensed here is the four OVAs from the 80s, being distributed by Manga Entertainment. The TV series from the 70s never made it here. But there is talk of Manga getting rights to Amon The Apocalypse of Devilman, a small OVA whose story takes place after the 80s OVAs, and it's just as gory and ridiculously violent. Good stuff.

I totally know what you are talking about. I would wake up every Saturday morning for that anime block. Then it disappeared. Then I was sad. T_T

But yeah, I remember a lot of what I caught on those Saturdays, actually. The movie you are referring to, I believe was called "Venus Wars". I remember the desrts and guns, and bizarre facial expressions. I also remember catching "8th Man After", "Armitage III: Poly-Matrix", "Record of Lodoss Wars", "Ran", "Dominion Tank Police", "3x3, Mars Eyes". Some good, old stuff. That's the first place I saw "Armitage III", for which I hunted fervently thereafter for years, until I finally found it and bought my prized possession (at the time).

Hmm I'll have to try and track down Venus Wars. And yeah I think I saw a few of those animes too but don't think I saw 'em on Sci-Fi.

If it turns out Venus Wars is in fact the anime (I know people in the past have suggested it was "Dominion Tank Police"), I'll have to e-glomp you or something.

(Edit: kind of random but I just remembered it. And it is about old school anime. One time me and my friend were at Wayside Video in Battle Ground.. they had a really small anime collection. Like, 10 movies. Tops. Anyways, we were there.. and um, we weren't in the right state of mind, so to speak. We ran into this guy with kind of long hair (I had long hair at the time too, so no discrimination here) and really ratty pants comes up and starts talking to me and my friend about anime.

Guy: "You guys like anime?"

Me: "Yeah man."

Guy: "Cool man. You guys like fighting anime?"

Friend: "Yeah.. blah blah.. Kenshin.."

Guy: "Right on. You gotta check out this anime man.. It's called Crying Freeman. It's got some of this *makes slashing motions with his hands* some of this *slow uppercut as if he was thrusting it through someone's chest* and some of this *pretends like he's a woman taking off her shirt*."

It was one of those things that was so hilarious at the time that I could not do anything except stand there in awe. We still talk about it to this day. Hi. Lar. E. Us.

Oh, and then I whatever I bought there ended up ringing up to exactly $4.20..... yeah.)

could this Galaxy Express you kids speak of have ever been edited down to a movie or a movie version was made of it. When I went to See Robin Williams Popeye it was in a double feature with Galaxy Express.

it was about a boy from earth who snuck onto a train that flew through space and they went to several planets and people were after him and he ended up with a robot chick body guard (who got nekked) and there was lots of blood for a "Cartoon"

Yeah, that movie you are talking about is "Galaxy Express 999". I've got that on VHS, and I totally forgot about it until right now. Thanks, Dan! I actually really like it, it being so much older than a lot of what I watch now. It has a pretty nice, classic feel to it that I don't get much in anything else. Agreed, I don't watch it all that much either, but it is a nice treat every once-in-a-while.
