Chinese New Year celebration in Portland - interest?
« on: December 27, 2006, 02:37:48 am »
How many people are planning on attending the Chinese New Year Cultural Fair - Year of the Pig celebration, in Portland?

http://www.portlandchinesetimes.us/cny07/2007nyf.html

It's on Feb. 10, a Saturday, all-day.

There's not a lot of information about this online. Has anyone attended one of these fairs before? We're trying to figure out what it's like, and considering Kumoricon making an appearance. :) If we get a booth there we can promote the con and even take registrations.

If you are interested please post!

Thanks for letting us know.  Thats a life saver.  I was supposed to have some one hand deliver a book to china by Christmas but they forgot to take it with them.  Now that i got it back from being locked in their empty house for a month I said I'd try and ship it by new years, now I have two extra months till Chinese new year

Oh and yes it is totally the year of the pig we will be celebrating.

http://www.portlandchinesegarden.org/awakening/orchids/info/C2/

Long ago, Buddha asked all the animals to participate in a contest of intellect and strength in which the first animal to cross a mighty river would be considered the winner.  The rat rode across on the back of the ox and jumped off just as they reached the other side, winning the race and becoming the first of the zodiac signs.  The ox was second, then the tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog and the pig was last.

This year is the year of the pig, people born in 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983 or 1995, were born under the sign of the pig.  Pigs are characterized as honest, noble, generous and joyful.  They take pleasure in caring for others and constantly worry about the happiness of everyone else in their life.  As the last of the animals in the secession of the Chinese zodiac, the pig represents bounty.  They are also students for life, always wanting to learn more.

I can always get a Saturday off I'm the boss.  I will plan on going If some one else from Eugene is going to bum a ride.  If I work the booth can I wear my red silk Chinese bathrobe, I'll look like Hugh Heffner scouting for PlayCos  magizine.  There is  10% chance I'll bring a friend if her Visa application is not rejected by Bejing again

Didn't someone cosplay that pig from Ranma 1/2? We should have them show up!

I say we do it...

Hi everyone!! I would like to say that we are trying very hard to get a booth at this year's Chinese New Year which is taking place at the Convention Center on Feb 10.

With up to 10,000 attendees, we'll need some help, so please get in touch ASAP if you can visit us at the booth for a bit!!!

More info in the Street Team 2007 thread under "Get Involved"

I should know by Friday 2/3/07 for sure if we have a booth.

More info:

In Short
The Oregon Convention Center is the site of this year's Chinese New Year Cultural Fair. Besides game booths, retail booths and cultural displays, there will be a dragon dance, lion dance, Chinese rod puppetry, children's choir, a singing contest and martial arts demonstrations, including a Kung Fu show. Last year, 10,000 visitors attended the one-day event, and this year is expected to be just as large.

Correction...it is on Feb. 10, a week and a half away.

That is, as it turns out, also the day of the general meeting. However, if you don't feel like going to Eugene for the meeting, we could use a couple of volunteers instead for the booth. :)

WE ARE IN-- we just don't know what our booth number is... or anything else. :-P But we will be there!!! Anyone not going to the Eugene meeting, please stop by and see us!!

And if anyone has any great ideas as to how to decorate the booth or things to do to get people involved (coloring pages etc.) let me know! I was thinking of a "name that anime" for the following pig-related pics:

P.S.  Admission is only $3!!!

I'll bring my camera and take pics of anyone who shows up in cosplay
