Kumoricon 2007 staff and volunteer signup
« on: September 07, 2006, 12:33:54 pm »
We know registration sucked ass. We know. We know. We know.

There are several ways we can make it smoother but none of them will matter if we don't have more people on those desks. We need more volunteers to run it next year. Any takers? Please? Without more people it simply will not get any better.

This is the bane of every convention, never having enough people. Wouldn't it be awesome if we could use the infinite power of the Internet to become fully staffed and process everyone at registration in under an hour? (I'll be happy if we can get it under two, actually.)

Anyone who wants to volunteer to spend the time to make Kumoricon bigger and better, please let me know. I will add you to the volunteer usergroup which will give you access to the volunteer forum, and there we can organize you into a lean, mean volunteering machine.

What does it take to volunteer? Nothing! Just the willingness to commit your time and effort to making Kumoricon a better convention.

What does it take to be staff? The same as volunteer plus a little more. You have to be 18. You have to expect to be busy for a lot of the convention. We really need you to be responsible, and be able to attend some general meetings.

Reply to this thread if you want to volunteer or be staff. Be sure to include:

1) Full Name (real)
2) E-mail
3) Forum Name
4) Age (useful for know if you're going to be available after curfew)
5) Volunteer or Staff, if Staff, indicate what position you may be interested in.

If you are uncomfortable posting any of the above information publically, send it to me in a private message and I will see that you get added.

5) Volunteer or Staff - Well my situation keeps me from meetings (usually), but I can layout publications (create flyers, programs, maps, pdfs, announcements, signage, tickets, etc...), make calls (contact press, etc...), write press releases, and any sort of graphic production (manipulate floorplans, maps, etc...)

I can also scout out locations for the next con, there were a few places I briefly Googled yesterday, not sure if they meet our needs 100%, but....

Embassy Suites Hotel Portland-Washington Square
Hilton Portland & Executive Tower
Holiday Inn downtown conv ctr

5) Volunteer or Staff, I would rather not do Yojimbo but I will if need be.

Edit: Back ground: I am a Bouncer at The Escape Night Club so if Yojimbo is understaffed I will do it. I have to help clean the club before and after it opens so I can help with cleaning duties. I can help move heavy things and I am adept at talking to people when I need to talk to them. I am an artist in my free time so I can help make banners and signs or what ever. I am fairly flexible and can do most anything. Let me know if you need my help.

4) I have socks and goggles over 20 years old
5) I offered my help several times at the meetings and in PM to staff as I do have several years experience setting up and running shows in and out of school as a student of technical theater and video production.   Only the creation station asked for my help in running a panel on using leather in costuming and then as no one else had volunteered I ran the repair station and was a last minute staff addition who’s status was lost in the paperwork shuffle.

For 2007 I’ll be a volunteer for set up, teach panles and I’ll actually be a hybrid cooperate Sponsor/Staff and run the Repair station again on my own dime that if added in early will be better prepared and advertised.

I am willing to be staff again.

1) Valerie Allen
2) valliegirl@gmail.com
3) valliegirl
4) I will be 26 by the time con comes around again.
5) Staff.  I'm interested in a few positions.

Registration Manager:  I worked with the Registration Desk on both Saturday and Sunday in 2006, so I do have a feel for what goes on behind the desk and what can go wrong.  As a registration manager, you need a person who is organized who can deal with whatever issues come up not only during con, but also before con as well.  I would be willing and able to commit my time and be accessible to our attendees for whatever questions or concerns they may have.

Info Desk Manager:  I worked on Info Desk directly in 2005, and, in 2006, did my best to field any questions as a general staff member that our attendees might have had in passing.  I am a person who is able to handle talking with our attendees about whatever issues or question they may have, as well as organizing the information that they will need.

Volunteer Coordinator or Personnel Manager:  A huge part of this job is communication and organization.  I would be willing and able to keep the lines of communication open to not only reach out to new people that may be interested in volunteering or staffing our con, but also keep everyone organized with scheduling who will be doing what when.

Grunt:  As it's basically been my position for the past two years, if you want me to work as a grunt again, I'm willing to do so.  Tell me where you need me, and I'll be there.

As a note to my qualifications, my job in the world outside of the con is as a customer service representative.   I work very well with people and can handle troubleshooting on a regular basis.

If you have any questions, please pm me, or email me at valliegirl@gmail.com

Edit:  Also, as for availability, I do work full time during the year, but I have lots of free time on my hands and would be able to help out with anything that needs to be done outside of con.  My new job gives me weekends off guaranteed so I shouldn't miss a meeting unless it's held in a location I can't get to by trimet or can't otherwise arrange a ride to (like to Eugene).  And, of course, I will be at the con's full disposal on Labor day weekend, and can easily arrange for time off.  Next year, I plan to be able to get there Friday morning and be available through Tuesday.
Take a chance 'cause you might grow

I see Vallery and I were the only ones to add any background information.  The volunteer coordinator (the con desperately needs one this year) should prepare some sort of form for all Volunteers (and staff) to fill out that notes any real world Employment, education, or hobby experience that may be of use for the convention.  Although for the most part we all are volunteering for certain task we are willing to help in other ways.  If no one is available or at first willing to cover certain areas the Coordinator or Convention Board will be able to find people already willing to help that have some relevant experience.

This is one of several things I will bring up again at the meeting.

04. I will be nineteen by the time Kumoricon 2007 comes around.
05. Volunteer or Yojimbo.

Volunteering: I'm willing to be just a simple volunteer. Maybe running water out to people at the registration, info desks and to the other volunteers and staff.

Yojimbo: I replaced a Yojimbo during the Saturday in 2006 registration line doing crowd control. I'd actually like to be a Yojimbo and not just a volunteer.

Registration Table: I saw how overloaded the registration table was for Saturday 2006. I'm very organized and quick with paperwork. I'm willing to help with the registration table.

I'm definately qualified for working long periods of time. As long as a job is explained to me before I start it, I'll be able to perform the job without mishap. I deal well with solving problems.

Any questions, verifications or otherwise that is needed from me please PM me here, or email me at kilte_rose@hotmail.com

Background: Been lovin' anime since youth, since I grew up in Japan. I do speak Japanese/English fluently, so that might come in handy if you have some Japanese speaking guests. :3 I can't believe how fast the con is expanding, I'm excited to be part of it every year.

I think (afaik) AMV Manager isn't elected, but rather appointed BY whoever gets elected as Programming Diety.

Anyway, AMVs are my favorite part of anime fandom, and I enjoy creating the contest & show, just playing them in a room somwheres, & swapping techniques, tips, fav's, etc.

currently 18, will be 19 at time of con.
Desired Position:
I tend to be a runner whenever I vollenteer for something. Meaning that I basically do anything (Within reason) that the director asks me to do. So I'm up for anything, I tend to have plenty of energy so fast paced things wont slow me down. Hope I can help.

Currently 19 will be 20 when the con arrives.
Volunteer or Yojimbo

I work as a cashier at a Bi-Mart and do paperwork rather quickly. If you need help at the registration table this year I'm more than happy to help you.

I'm also willing to do anything from crowd control or simply running errands.

I helped a few Yojimbo's out last year with the people outside, keeping them on the sidewalk and not in the street. I wouldn't mind being one for the con.

Any questions, verifications or anything of concern please feel free to PM me here or email me at kikyogoddess@yahoo.com

Age:21

To whom this may concern,
I am Nathan Chamberlain, other wise known as 'Default' or 'Bull'. I was at 2006 Kumori-con with my wife 'Katt'. I may not be remembered by name, but more so the guy that kicked out that drunk spiderman idiot during the Techno-Rave thing. From there "Brownie" elected me as not chief of security, but as a personal sort of Special Ops.
I have 2 years of security experience and am a prior Lance Corporal of the U.S.M.C. I very much enjoy my work and I am licensed to work security in both Oregon and Washington. I am armed and unarmed certified (however I see little reason I should be carrying a side arm at a convention). I am also certified in ASP, Use of Force, Hand Cuffing, as well as many others.
I thoroughly enjoyed 2006's Kumori-con, and hope to be a part of next years festivities. I am not seeking to be official security, more a special operations. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

5) Whoever helps with manning/running the reg table

I already have my con reg and a room reserved, so I don't need that.  Just want to help make the con better for everybody.  I am also one of those EVIL morning people, so manning the reg tables early won't be a problem.

I can be the minion who watches the cosplay panel room and cosplay lab, not that I would run but 3 hours of the programing in such room but i'll be the manager of said room open to close  each day (and have heard from/of 3 to 5 people who will be my henchmen and henchwomen  )

I bet you'll watch that cosply lap you dirty old man! *snicker*

OK, anyway. I'm going to have a table that i need to watch or arrange for my people to be watching it. I don't know how much help I'll have but I may be stuck in Artist's Alley for awhile during the con, especially setting up the table before hand, which is when I usually do the most work.

anyway, I hope it doesn't take too much away from my ability to help.

What can you do?

We always need more Yojimbo!  :D

We need a tech to be in charge of the Karaoke and Live programming rooms, basically the programming outside of Main Events. Any good with lights?

Last I heard Relations still needed Guest Hosts. You need a car and an id that'll get you into bars (just in case). Also, Brad DeMoss likes redheads. >_>

Street Team is an easy way to be staff, however you're going to have to pull your weight on this one since most of the members are volunteers. If you can be a connection to more stores than the ones on the Street Team  LIST that'll get your foot in the staffer door.

How are you with a sharpie? There's a position we've been needing to fill for awhile but I'm not sure if its under Ops or Publicity. Signmaster. The person who posts signs for announcements and directions if rooms and events move. This position may or may not be the person who speaks with the hotel about programming those nifty LCD screens in front of every room.

In the end, every department needs more hands so there's always going to be "mook" positions available.

Good to know.
As a member of Pocky Club you'll already be counted as a Volunteer unofficially. Sign up and designate yourself as "Live Programming".

This will make it more likely for you to be helping with stuff that you know AND stuff that effects you (since you'll need to be available for your Ouran event).

I think you'll get along great with Mike Fuller.

5) Volunteer or Staff.  Don't know what is available or needed.  Of note, I am in a wheelchair and need assistance getting around so I can't do "running" activities or need to move from place to place without a lot of warning...  But I sit well.  :P  I would really like to do something connected to ADA compliance since I know this is an issue at other cons I attend (and the hotel already told me all of their wheelchair accessible rooms are booked for the weekend).  I know how to crack a whip to keep an aisle clear (or to accidentally run over a beautiful costume when people don't hear me or dart in front of my wheelchair...)   ::)
