Do we have to pay sales taxes in Washington state? (Yes)
« on: April 21, 2007, 04:13:54 pm »
I know this sounds silly.
BUT does anyone know:

Since the convention is in Washington this year, does this mean when we purchase things at the convention, will the sales taxes be included in our purchases?

I've been wondering that for weeks now.
Silly silly I know.

But if anyone could answer, it would be more than appreciated.

That is up to individual venders and Artist if they want to include the tax in the displayed price or if they will add tax onto the item.

Well at Kumoricon's much biger sister con, Sakuracon thats in seattle some vendors might not include it, but i'd say 90% to 100% of the vendors just include sales tax into the price they post on the item. All the vendors and artists i bought from at this years Sakuracon just included sales tax already.

Yeah, there's a few who actually try to do the math and add sales tax after, but most just build it into the price on the tag so that they don't have to make complicated change.

THIS TOPIC should be able to help you better understand whether or not Oregonians are taxed on various different products in the state of Washington.[/url]

I think the reason for that is because most of the vendors up there were from the Seattle area, so sales tax would have been included for them if you had gone to their stores, anyway.

It makes sense for them to just add it into the price so really it shouldn't be a huge deal.

Don't worry, we won't charge tax at The Slants' booth...

I think it's easier for cash handling reasons (not to mention not spending time calculating out the tax) for vendors to round up to the dollar or quarter rather than dealing with all kinds of change.

Again, please offer a descriptive subject when you start a topic, rather than "Silly question". (Unless the topic is in fact, silly questions, and in the spam forum.) Thanks.

^ I disagree.  Sales tax is a good thing, because it assists with fundings.  (This is why Oregon schools are having so much problems).

All in all, I think Oregon would have less problems if it had a sales tax of its own; it would be small, like 4.5% or something, but something would be a good thing for you guys.

Ha!
Save your propaganda taxman. Just because the government gets more money doesn't mean we benefit.

Oregon State ID? Make sure to bring the exemption forms for the businesses too because not many places actually keep those handy.

Sales tax isn't going to be that big of a deal. Especially in our situation. There's been enough of us convention Oregonians enjoying the park across the street that the State is justified in getting more money out of us. Also, this Hotel/Convention Center is actually the property of the City of Vancouver, they let the Hilton manage it for them to have a high quality hotel chain downtown. So while our hotel room fees are paying Hilton employees, the high quality of the convention center itself is completely due to the City of Vancouver spending tax dollars on it.

I'm against sales tax in my hometown but I don't have a problem with it in Vancouver. It pays for lovely wifi networks and shiny LCD screens.

Look for an earlier topic in this forum where it's been discussed before. Oregonians only get exemptions in certain circumstances and only when the seller wishes to provide it (ie you cannot demand an exemption from a business that refuses to provide it). I have no idea whether any of the businesses in downtown Vancouver, particularly any of the convenience stores and take-out restaurants, offer it. Basically, don't expect to get an exemption.
