Curious about eyebrow trimming/etc for cosplay purposes
« on: August 22, 2007, 10:52:56 am »
Okay, so I've heard that when your natural hair/brow color and the color of your character (and their wig) are VERY DIFFERENT, it can help to get your eyebrows done/trimmed/made neater so that they're less obvious and/or it's easier to apply make-up over them to make them the right color.

My hair/eyes/brows are very nearly black.
My character, seen above, has pink hair.

I'm getting my eyebrows done professionally (waxed? partially!! I love my eyebrows.) during my lunch hour this tuesday.
....But it's kinda scary.

Have other people done this? o_o

I was just waxing right now actually XD Lol

I'll tell you this, brows are the part that hurts to least. Feel your forehead and you'll realize that it's not an overly sensitive area and it's pretty strong, so the top part wont hurt. However the lower part, like the arch area, will hurt depending on how thick your brows are and how close to the lid area. It'll sting just for a second - honestly, no longer and your eyes may tear up, but it's just from the sensation. I'm Greek, Armenian and from Turkey XD so I've grown up with waxing

As for trimming...oh man I accidentally took a chunk out of my brows the other day but anyway, it actually helps to THIN the brows out...it's hard to explain but you're not gonna be plucking just layer it. Ask the lady, she'll get it. Ask her to thin out the hair NOT the shape of the brows. Like cutting over on top of the brows to thin it out.

As for making your brows pink, there are some temporary color gels you can put on your hair, use one of those. Gloop (lol) it on there really well, and it'll work. OR just dye them...honestly, it grows back within a week, our brows and lashes fall out constantly. Bleach your eyebrows and go over it with hot pink. Or you can buy one of those hot pink dye packs from Hot Topic, they have bleach in them.

I had my hair bleached last month (I'm a chocolate brunette) and my roots grew back so fast...and as for the brows, even faster...naturally, I'm back to being chocolate, it was such a bother to bleach every week. After the con, you can just dye your brows black again, no problem.

Sooooooooooooooooooo yeah, hope that helped.

Woah woah woah. Slow down there. That is NOT a good idea. The bleach you use on your hair is WAY different than the bleach you should be using on your brows. Doing that could result in blindness.

Now, personally, I have been bleaching the hair on my head for about a year now from a very dark brown. Naturally my eyebrows are also very dark. So I use facial bleach (Joleens works the best for me] on my eyebrows. They have instructions on how to do it. But if you do go down this path be very careful not to get any in your eyes. But if you want to not permanently lighten them, I suggest you used a colored creme (like sunneytehbunney said) or just putting foundation on over them.

But since you are only wearing this costume for three days, I suggest just getting them shaped and trimmed. I also thin my eyebrows (I have catepillars thanks to my heritage), I use a little facial hair razor that I bought from the drug store it looks like this: http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/2649/imagesfacialtouch3ld1.jpg
And it comes with a little attachable head that has different trimming lengths (that pink thing in the photo). You just slide that on, then go over your brows, against the grain of the hair, and it will thin them out. I suggest using the longer setting first if you do this. Personally I like to trim mine really short, but that may not be the best for you.

But like sunnytehbunney said. Waxing really isnt all that bad :] I got it done once, and they gave me a really nice shape... but as you can probablly tell, im a freak about my eyebrows and wanted something different, so now I take care of them myself. Sorry for going on such a long tangent, I tend to do that when it comes to eyebrows. But I hope I could be of help! And I hope that everything works out for you. If you have any more questions just ask.

I actually need to go get my eyebrows trimmed for Kumori-Con. Do that Monday or Tuesday. But I find that trimming your eyebrows simply work the best. I tend to cosplay darker haired characters, so it doesn't matter too much for me.

Oh, please, please use facial bleach if you want to bleach your eyebrows.

Hahah, thanks for all the responses ^ - ^

Yeah, there's NO way I'm bleaching my brows. It was enough fun bleaching tiny portions of my hair when I tried that years ago, my hair is very very nearly black and it wants to STAY that way.

My plan is as follows-- have my brows professionally shaped and maybe waxed a bit, and then cover them with pink liquid eyeliner. I've also been told that crayons can work on eyebrows (coming off on hair but not skin) but I haven't attempted that yet.

It was very difficult to find the proper pastel highliter pink that most pink wigs (like mine) come in, but I've found a pretty good one--now I just need to whip my brows into shape so it's easier to put the stuff on them!
