Suggestion #1: Recycling
« on: September 08, 2004, 11:34:37 am »
Being as I was on staff, most of my suggestions are really just thoughts, since I already know most of the reasons why things were done the way they were done.

That said, one of my first suggestions for next year would be a recycling service. I brought it up at a meeting months before the con, mentioning how Sakura Con has no place to recycle cans, and they assured me that this was the hotel's responsibility. It was thought that they lacked recycle bins because it is held in Washington, and Oregon recycles more than Washington.

Well, we found out for ourselves that this Marriott, at least, is about the same as the Sea-Tac Hilton. I don't know how much you folks care about recycling, but when I think of all the hundreds, even thousands of cans of pop drunk by con-goers, I believe we should do something other than throw them away.

My first response last year was to offer to put out and monitor recycle bins, but I quite obviously didn't know what I would be getting into. I think we need to work out some kind of system for this. The Marriott's trash receptacles were hard enough to find as it was, so I imagine that we should also do it for the purpose of giving people new places to throw away recyclable garbage.

Raiden, I think you're on to something. Just think, if KumoriCon took in all the pop bottles from Congoes (quick calc 1000 con goes x $0.05 per bottle = $50 bucks...and that's if one person drinks one bottle!). Anyway, I totaly agree that something should be done.

The problem with setting the bins out is that you gotta pay somebody to take care of them.  Unless you can somehow haul all of them cans to a recycling center.

And don't you diss on WA!  We recycle a lot!  And we care about the environment just as much as Oregon does, thank you VERY much!    *hiss*

but yea, I know how you feel.  I hate it when stuff that should be recycled gets tossed.  I tend to drag home all the recycling stuff I have consumed products from after staying somewhere and just tossing it in our bin.

Sorry Legato. :( I'm just echoing what was said to me. It doesn't reflect Washington individuals, persay, but rather ecological legislation, the nature of big city recycling programs, and the way hotels operate there.

Having volunteers haul them may not be enough of a solution. We need a plan for who is going to do it, driving what, and carrying what kind of bags. I'm sure a convention can easily produce far more pop cans than the average Boy Scout pop can drive ever collects.

If I end up volunteering for this, I'll contact local recycling centers and see what kind of incentives they would need in order to help us out, and what help they are ready to offer to anyone. After all, recycling is only profitable because we have laws expressly designed to make it that way.

So not true. Washington recycles just as much as Oregon does, and in fact, Washington residents go and recycle *IN* Oregon.

More and more, the can and bottle machine scan bar codes that will tell then if drink was at least bottled in Oregon, so it's getting trickier for
Washington people to do that.

I'd love to at least see some "cans and bottles only bins" for only the items that have the 5 cent deposit on them.

Then I have another question about that to do with the money, but I'm going to ask this as a new question/topic.

If the can says "5c" in a state then it should be allowed to recycle that can in that state, no matter where it's bottled. And.. bottles are shipped between states to stores so I don't think it matters.

'Should be' is good to say, but that isn't reality anymore, unless you go someplace without a scanner.  Stores only have to take the brands of soda or beer they sell, and if the barcode shows it's not from Oregon...no money.

Um, I took some cans to Oregon this SUMMER, and there was no problems other than Fred Meyer's wouldn't take Safeway brands. The machines can't tell. If they could they've have to be hooked up to a network, which they aren't.

Btw, please don't say things like "that isn't reality" that reminds me of my mother and REALLY pisses me off. >_>

Just as a general, neutral statement, pop can recycling has changed a lot since I was a kid.  Stores don't want to have to hire someone to handle returned cans. While the deposit doesn't affect them at all, they lose money in counting and sorting them. That's why they're willing to spend thousands of dollars on counting machines: it saves them from having to hire people to count them.

As Naboo mentioned briefly, the reason they try not to accept outside cans is because the law doesn't require them to. They can, but if they can prove that a pop can came from somewhere else, then they don't have to accept it.

Now, regarding who recycles better than their neighbor, I really don't care whether Washingtonians or Oregonians are "better." All I care about is whether the individual cares. And thankfully, it seems a lot of you do.

Awesome! :) I'm glad to hear someone else is interested. Please, by all means bring it up if you get the chance. Last week there were too many other important issues for me to butt in (after all, this isn't a pressing issue at the moment).

I will not be at the meeting tomorrow, as I have class at that time this week. Hopefully I'll see you next week.

I don't want to get into "yes they do, no they don't," because it must depend on what kind of machine the store has.  I brought in some cans that I realized later must have been from California (regular diet pepsi) and the machine wouldn't take them.  I'm sorry "that isn't reality" bothers you.  OWNS and things like that are annoying to some people as well.  As long as we aren't calling eachother names or things you can't say on rated G TV programs, isn't it all good?

Totally for recycling at the con!  :)

To hopefully cool the waters, let me quote an old adage from a friend I knew in high school:

"My reality is stronger than you reality, and in my reality you are a turnip."

Since I am a turnip, and there is nothing I can do about it, I've decided to move on with my life. :) So... what will I do with my life as a turnip? I've decided to talk about recycling... ;)

Are you suggesting they're not cool? All I see is a debate about cans and a part where all I did was ask someone not to use a phrase around me. (I'm sure other people have weird quirks too. )

But okay, if you're so eager for a fight: You're a NANYGOGOBOOGERBUM!  (whoa, that made me giggle :P )

Anyway, perhaps talking to the city recycling centers would help with the project. They could send a truck and collect recycling every day, or so, so the con doesn't get swamped in gross sticky popcans and bottles.

Heh... well... "That phrase bothers me on a subconscious level" seemed a bit serious for a recycling thread. I just thought it'd be safe to lighten it up with a joke.

*scratches his turnip head*

Anyway.... yeah, that's exactly what I was suggesting. Sending a truck is exactly the help I was hoping for. I don't expect they'll be able to offer manpower to help with collecting it, but it couldn't hurt to ask.

They could probably provide you with some recycle bins too, or if not you can get some trash bins from the store and label them "cans only" "glass only" et ctra.

Cmon, don't you think Nanygogoboogerbum is funny? :p

some of the waste companys even do the sorting. Here in Salem they have Larg Blue Grabage cans that you put out on the street and they pick them up just like your normal trash. then they take it to sort (by had or by mashine I don't know) But I guess part of that is becuse some people where not sorting and makeing a big mess that they had to clean up, so Pay someone to clean up or pay someone to sort everything. Works eithire direction.
