So guess what happined to me yesterday!
« on: June 27, 2007, 12:20:05 pm »
So yesterday my mother and I were at the mall getting me some new clothes. Our neighbor called us at this point and said that there were around 3 cop cars, and 8 cops at our house, and they had a warrant.

W hen we got back they read me my rights and patted me down. In the mean time and am in a state of shock! After about 15min of us asking what was going on they finally told us that I was being suspected of hacking into the Tigard Library computer system! They then asked me a series of questions on my computer knowledge and stuff like that.

After about 30min of questioning they finally asked me to stay outside whiled they check all of the computers in the house. After they did that they came outside and told me they were going to take my computer away for forensic analysis, and that it may be gone for up to a month! They also took my cell phone because "I may have accessed my computer from it."

First of all I would like to tell you all that I'm innocent and didn't do this! I'm not that bad of a person! Hopefully I'll be acquitted soon because they have a voice sample of they guy that did it and they recored my voice yesterday, and they will NOT match!

Ugh! This is all just a really big hassle! They even too my external hard drive, which had all of my anime on it! I'm using my mom's laptop at the moment, and will have to use it for awhile, so I won't be on the forums as much...

I saw this on your myspace.

And I think it's really stupid. Well, at least we know everything will work out since I know you didn't do it.

It's still lame though.

Now you just have to wonder, Multiple personality disorder? One side, a mild mannered King'o'spam. The other, a devious computer hacker, getting into everyone's comps, and taking all their stuffs.

....  o.o

wow dude.

Why in the world would anyone hack a library?  Clear out over due book fees?

I'm sorry that you got wrongly accused of anything, but if you should get accused of a crime, it should be way cooler.  At least it makes for a semi interesting story, one you might laugh at sometime down the road.

That's really lame - do you think someone at your school or that you might now might have given them your name as a possibility? I actually don't know anyone who can hack into anything - and seriously, the freakin' library!? Even if they had a hacker, what he heck could they do!? Re-arrange all the names of the books? At least it'd give the librarians something to do re-organizing them. Yeesh! I hope you get your compy back. If we have to we can start up a stash fund and replace it =)

loltigard.

Major lameness.  Let's hope it gets resolved soon.

You'd think they'd try matching up something like what IP's had accessed the network recently or something.  Or maybe they don't realise that they can do that.

Actually even if they do match IP address, how can they prove that it was Actually You doing anything from the computer anyway?  Someone could have hacked your account and cleaned their tracks, or used a script-kiddy tools to create a proxy on your computer.  Additionally when they issue a warrant for a search you should carefully read the terms for it.  IIRC in most places it's not legal to go in with a blanket search warrant.  They have to actually list the things they suspect are not legal.  So if they went in specifically looking for evidence that you did something to the local library system, then anything else they find, or could have reasonably found during that search wouldn't be something they could do anything to you with.  However you should probably write all your files off as lost.  Also, I am not a lawyer and make no claims to actually know anything about laws, this is just what I remember having come up before in prior conversations elsewhere.

Personally, I applaud the police department for actually doing something, but there's some stuff that I question.

One - Evidence
Two - The amount of cars & police (It seems like there should have only been one squad car for a "crime" like that)
Three - The search.  Did they only mess with computer related stuff?  I had a friend who was accused of murder & the local police trashed the whole house & stole about $300 worth of old coins that had been in the family for many years.

Maybe they wanted to harness the power of the Dewey Decimal System?

But seriously, it's about time they gave everything back.  I checked out your first post and you said they said they would be done in a month.  I don't know what calender they were using but from June to December is not a month.

Just remember that your hardware has been in the hands of those who at the very least lied to you about a return timeframe.  Who knows what else they may have done to your stuff, completely re-flashing firmware and reinstalling the software would not be bad ideas.

Yes, trust no current executable code in any areas that are modifiable.  Granted, they probably didn't do anything to it, but it's still a good idea, who know what kinds of other nasty viruses or other items your hardware may have been exposed to.  It's very difficult to be too paranoid in such matters.
