Newtype USA magazine no more
« on: March 13, 2008, 06:00:35 pm »
Well just recieved my first PiQ magazine.  Basically Newtype USA has closed shop and so all those who had a subscription with Newtype USA will continue with them.  But I sure was suprised to see Newtype USA closing up.

I used to buy NT but then it started losing its focus on Japan (and thereby, its focus on anime) and it became harder and harder to find information about what's new and hot in Tokyo and especially Akihabara It was really hard to find the charts for Most Popular Chara in Japan, for example, or What's Airing in Tokyo This Month. So I let it go. Worst was when Uwa stocked only the NT/USA version, so even if you wanted to read in Japanese to see what was going on back in anime ground-zero, you couldn't get the REAL THING.

Well the nice thing was I still had 7 months left on my subscription.  But a magazine called PiQ took all these subs and gave us 2 times the amount of time left on our Newtype USA subscriptions in return.  I havn't really read it as of yet but hopefully its a good magazine.

Their website is www.piqmag.com

Well there is this, but it is focused on cosplay, not the whole anime culture.

I got a copy of the last issue of Newtype USA.  In it was a postcard to fill out for a chance to win one of seven prizes.  I chose one & sent it off.  Does this mean that my prize is not available?  I want my prize.

Read OtakuUSA. That is all.

--

To elaborate: OtakuUSA is like if the old NewtypeUSA and the old Anime Insider had a love child that was locked away in a Cave with Master Asia for the first 10 years of its life. Now it has emerged from the cave to defend the honor of Anime magazines while AI and NT/USA go down the tube.

Full of brilliant writers, a lot of coverage (both US and Japan) and it is as colorful as Newtype and it comes with a DVD like Newtype. As funny articles and serious ones as well.

Please, support them.

Well, guess I'm gonna have to tell my friend we can't get anymore new Newtypes for anime club next year o-o;;

I'm very surprised by the news of this. I thought they were doing great too. Anybody know why they had to stop?

I think the only thing wrong with PiQ is that it is more of an entertainment magazine with a little anime flavor to it than a full fledged anime magazine.
