Japans Internet Providers
« on: March 17, 2008, 05:37:53 pm »
Well just heard that Japans 4 internet providers will be blocking file sharing.  So I'm curious how this will effect getting anime online.

Well you can take it with a grain of salt sense the report was on G4 but it does make sense.  The crack down on peer 2 peer downloading isn't being done by the Japanese Government but by the 4 internet providers themselves.  So I'm wondering if maybe they are getting a little nudge by the Anime industry themselves.  Hey if they can't stop us over here from downloading anime then they surely can stop it from coming over from there.

There is some more info.

There is, almost definitely, going to only a short term affect brought about by this. Closing down P2P in Japan isn't even a feasible long term fix. When P2P was ruined in America (when Napster tanked and KaZaA failed us), it didn't take long for people to go to filesharing websites, bittorrents, etc. Japan moves about twice as fast and is already 5 steps a head.

The principle is the same as closing off all exits in a room so that an expanding gas can't escape. The gas will build up and be halted for a short period of time, but then the room will explode with a number of new holes.

All of Japan has only 4 internet providers?

Anyway, all the people who use P2P to transfer non-pirated materials, like writers sending things to editors/betas, are going to be steamed too.

Well I kind of hope what happened here when peer to peer sites were stopped happens there.  I figure when they were closed here it finally got companies to look into pay for download models for music.  I'm hoping maybe they may finally start thinking about a way to make it so we can start to pay (reasonably) for content that is coming out.  So if a new anime comes out that withen that week we can download it for a fee (mind you reasonable fee).

I read on animenewsnetwork.com somewhere that it is not illegal to download movies and tv shows in Japan, but it is illegal to upload them.

Can you give me a link to that if you know where it is?  I surf ANN daily, and I've never seen anything like that.

This explains the real reason why P2P is being attacked.

But you probably already knew that.

Thats what they say but I really don't feel that is the biggest issue of why they are doing it.

I am pretty sure it is the 4 largest internet providers, not that Japan only has 4...

Good joke Tom... <_<;; I just hope you're kidding.
