Custom Wigs and Elf Ears
« on: July 15, 2008, 12:47:06 am »
Here I am asking for advice again. :) The good news is that this means I value your opinion around here.

Having addressed most of my other costume needs, two of the things left on the checklist are wig and elf ears.  First of all, the wig: I need somebody who does custom styling for wigs.  My desired wig style is not difficult and is a 'do you could get from a regular stylist.  I'd prefer to work with someone in the Portland area to save on shipping.

Secondly, I'm looking for a good set of anime-style elf ears.  Sadly, it seems that Cosworx does not have them in stock right now for whatever reason. :( (Perhaps they are sold out due to the convention season?) Below is the style I'd want, though the ears in the picture are longer than I would prefer:

I'd greatly appreciate any reliable sources that you may know of. I'd be especially grateful for firsthand recommendations, so I can know about the reliability of the seller.  And of course, local sellers are always a plus. ;)

I'm not sure if any of them are close to what you want but I figure it's worth showing you ^^

Cosworx doesn't make them anymore. But Firefly Path still does!

I used Aradani Studios last year for my Link ears. They were fast and I was very happy. The ears were light weight, and I didn't notice them after a while. They were a lot more fun than I imagined, too!

I recommend buying their spirit gum and spirit gum remover. It doesn't take a lot to glue on the ears, but it works extremely well.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. :) I think Aradani Studios' smaller set of elf ears seems best.  They recommend them for Hylians, and this is a Link costume, so maybe I should go with their suggestion. What do you guys think?

Smaller Ears ---- Larger Ears ---- Link Example

After that's taken care of, though, I'm still looking into styled wigs. Right now I have an offer for $70 plus shipping.  That includes the wig itself, styling, extensions, and wig stand.  It's a lot, but for all that I'm not sure I can get a better deal.  High-quality wigs can cost as much as 40 bucks without styling.

Has anybody else here bought a pre-styled wig for a character whose hair you'd never be able to match otherwise?

Oh. Cool. I did Ordon Village Link last year. I used the smaller ears. Here's a picture of how it turned out:

It's a nutter picture, but Zelda and I used identical ears. We liked them a lot :)

If you and Zelda used the same ears, then the differences in appearance must be due to how you angled them. That's good; it means that I can use the same kind of ears and angle them so they stick up over the sides of the hat. :) I'll buy some soon.

Now I just need to find some good chain mail that won't weigh a ton...

P.S. - Great job on your costumes. :) I especially like your Ordon Link.
