So just for everyone's information
« on: December 14, 2008, 09:28:58 am »
YES, 6th gen consoles are cheap right now.  Why?  Because they're all refurbished, 70-80% of the machines still on the market today will break within a few years, it's Christmas time, and it's the imminent ridiculous drop in value that every system has before it can start being a classic. (5th gen is starting to pick up; GoodWill raised their price on N64's from $5 to $8 within the last year, and that's GoodWill; a good 2nd or 3rd gen system in working condition is worth almost what it cost new)

360's too.  Not sure why.  They're probably all the defective ones.

I was kind of exaggerating that point so people wouldn't come knocking angrily on my window (I've got a door, but it's not as popular) when their $40 PS2s break.

They're all refurb, which probably means they're quite a bit better than the factor sealed ones; it means there's a good chance more than 50% of the components actually function.

buying one new is kinda the same as buying a broken one  :P .

what exactly does refurbished mean? they're used and have some new parts in them? I didn't think they did that with consoles and thinking about a house term makes it weird.

Yeah.  Basically, when you sell a console to any specifically licensed gaming retailer, they test it for functionality in all departments, replace any broken parts, get a "refurbished" sticker if it's a Sony system or anything else that has a "void" seal to un-void the warranty, and then sell it.  The difference between pre-owned and refurbished is that refurbished systems have been repaired.

Some stores sell refurbished systems cheaper.

So it has the functionality of a new one, but is cheaper...? Hmm. I like that.

Pretty much.  Think of it like a pre-owned car.  Even if the owner puts better parts and nice interior in it, it'll cost less because someone else owned it first.

No prob.  I just noticed those prices walking through the Lloyd Center and thought, "you know, maybe I don't have to worry so much about getting systems for MEW Con." :P

I'm guessing it has more to do with the fact that it was a 360.  Everyone knows that Microsoft makes unreliable products that are too advanced to be stable.  I don't suppose you tried Vista when it was first released, did you?

I actually was part of the "developers" beta and then part of the public beta... So I know exactly how bad it was...
Alright, so I don't need to remind you that it probably wasn't the "refurbished", it was the "Microsoft". :P

Until the 360 was released, I thought fat PS2's and PSP's were unstable systems.
