yeah. you by a dye thats a grey black and some times it gives you the instructions for color of fabric prior. the longer you let the fabric sit in the dye the darker the fabric will be.
my mom used to dye and customize beanie babies on the side

yup yup.
just select the color you want and follow the instrcutions.
make sure you waash it thoroughly when your done, or else it'll get stiff and you might get nasty dye runs going down the side =[

A) Make sure you get the right dye for your fabric.
B) Make sure you get enough dye for your fabric.
C) Make sure you rinse all the excess dye out.
D) If you can get it, use a dye fixative as well, or you might get bleed-off/rub-off onto other things. The fixative also improves how lightfast it'll be, as well as colourfastness. Once you've done that, fabric softeners can eliminate some of the post-dyeing stiffness.

Caveat: a true deep black is finicky, from what I can tell, with most readily-available dyes.  I don't tend to use Rit or Dyelon or the like, so I don't know how theirs are (some bad experiences made me shy away from them), but most black dyes will have some cast to them.  Just read through whatever you buy and they should clarify things.  You may have to dye it several times to get it as true-black as you want.

Acrylic is a bitch to dye.  I hope you're not working with that.  :)

I have tried dyeing fabric before and it turns out alright. There are a lot of lines on mine, I could have just done it wrong but it still looked ok. The problem was that I couldn't get the colors to match :P

yeah, you just gotta make sure that its not synthetic. well you can dye it if it IS synth but you have to make sure its the right kind.

i recently found a new dye that works AWESOME, and you can use one pack of natural dye and one of synth for blends and it comes out really nice.

its called idye

ive used rit tons of times, i just really REALLY like that new idye stuff i came across. it also comes in a little water-soluable packet in the box thingie. so it doesn't get powder everywhere quite so easily.
