What do you do with old VHS tapes
« on: January 22, 2009, 01:08:03 pm »
I've been cleaning house and have come to a bit of a problem. I have a decent sized collection of old anime on VHS tapes. It feels crappy to just throw them out, but I can't think of much else to do with them. So I come to you guys; surely someone else has had this problem before and figured something out. Any ideas? I was thinking that clubs probably wouldn't take them or have use for them, same goes for libraries.

It's worth mentioning that while there are plenty of commercial tapes, there are also a lot of 1st gen fansubs as well.

Okay, I'll catalog and box it up then post on here what I got. Only rule is whoever wants it has to take it all.

I know for sure I have all of the Kyuketsuki Miyu TV, Utena, Slayers, a lot of Urusei Yatsura and a few other shows.

Oh and Combustible Campus Gaurdress.. Which should have been picked up here. It's right up there with Muteki Kanban Musume

There ought to be some way to store on DVD. I'd watch them first to see how badly they have degraded over the years. Magnetic tape just doesn't last long.

To do that, it requires a VCR that I don't have.

Next I think.

Eh anywho since there seems to be spots of interest, and it would make me feel more comfortable, is there anyone in the 18+ range who would want to pick it up and part-out the collection to the relevant parties? I just got home so I'm starting the job/quest of sorting things out now.

Okay so there are some tapes missing out of the larger series:

ToHeart Tapes 1-4
Lots of slayers from 1st season to 2nd; Movies/ovas: Great, Return
Lost Universe 1-3
Magic Knights Rayearth
Marmalade Boy
Lots of Urusei Yatsura
Sailor Moon - some original JDM through S; Ami chan no hatsukoi
Dragon Half
Tatoon Master
Some Eva
All of DNA^2
The X movie
Aa Megami Sama original
Bubblegum Crisis+Crash
Devil Hunter Yoko
Most of Utena.
Early Nadesico

There are collectors out there, selling is a good option to try at least. I still have all mine, don't intend to get rid of them, and I know I'm not the only one.

I would suggest Goodwill or Value Village, if you are concerned with just getting rid of them. Or ebay! People always look for classics on ebay.
I've heard that Goodwill won't accept any VHS tapes anymore. O.o;

Pop 'em into a VCR, run it through a capture card (they're about $80-$200 IIRC), and convert them to Digital Video.

My time is more valuable than this. It would be cheaper to just re-buy everything than it would be to sit down and do this.

its a "take the whole box, or take none" kind of deal. I think it's all there, and I'm referring to the proper Sonoda stuff, not the accidental spillover cast from El Hazard. :)

I still watch my old VHS tapes. We've got Spaceballs and half of Star Trek in our VHS library, along with some old Thundercats, Beast Wars, She-Ra and Sailor Moon. Cardcaptor Sakura and Digimon too, come to think of it. And the first Pokemon movie.

I've seen (can't recall the URL... I'll search if I must) a photo of a dress created from tapes pulled from old VHS and cassette tapes. It actually was rather pretty looking - the person looped the tape around itself in a way such that it looked almost like fur   :D

I think THAT would be a good tribute to old anime tapes ....

I still keep my old VHS tapes purely for nostalgia purposes. Reminds me of when I was young and getting into anime.

You could keep them just for memories' sake...

Because VHS tapes had fewer episodes/unit, they have more cover art for a given series. Just sayin' :)

I keep my old VHS tapes, but that's only because I have one that was never released on DVD, and very few others.  If you are honestly trying to get rid of them, donate them to the local library.  Yes, they would prefer DVDs, it is the current video standard (Blu-Ray will need a few years to catch up, not everyone is going out and buying a new player at the moment), but they still will take them.  I think.  I haven't donated anything but books to a library since before DVDs so I'm actually not that sure.

Wow, I just dated myself.  Ack. ^.^;
No, I'm not insane.  I'm just... happy.

Sorry that I forgot about this thread; I went to Spokane on a work trip and spaced it.

There are two boxes which are about 18" on a side full of tapes. Unfortunately, most of the tapes are fansubs. If you're 18+ and interested, send me a PM. If they're still here come saturday morning, they're going in the dump.
