Cosplay Choreography Contest
« on: July 15, 2009, 05:27:22 pm »
Show off your dancin' skills! :D Perform known dances like the Hare Hare Yukai or Thriller, or come up with a new dance of your own! Please coordinate your cosplay with your dance though, as it is a cosplay choreography contest after all.

When and where will it be? Main Events space, Monday morning.

CATEGORIES
Best Group
Best Individual
Group - Most Awesome Performance of a Dance Based on Choreography that Already Exists (AKA Best Existing)
Group - Most Awesome Performance of a Dance Made Up of Original Choreography (tentative title) (AKA Best Original)
Individual - Best Existing
Individual - Best Original

The prizes aren't anything special because this isn't an official event like the cosplay contest. It is mostly just for fun! :3

Judging will be based on sharpness, timing, togetherness (for groups), character (yes, it is part of dancing too), difficulty of the choreography (minor factor), presentational effect of all aspects together (music + costume + dance), audience reaction, and personal reaction.  So far I am the only judge. If you are interested in being one, please PM me. Anyone, If you think I have left anything out that should be taken into account for judging, please tell me.

For clarification on what counts as "original" vs. "existing":

It's all based on the choreography itself. Let's take the examples I listed at the beginning of this post, the Hare Hare Yukai and Thriller. If you want to perform to the music of either but you're making up entirely different choreography to them, that's "original." Original choreography by you. If you're planning on using the choreography from one and putting it to different music - let's say you'll be dancing to the Thriller music, but dancing the Hare Hare Yukai choreography, that's "existing" because, well, that dance - the set of choreography - already exists. If you're planning on doing a mix of choreography, like half Hare Hare Yukai and half Thriller choreography, it's still "existing" because it's based off of dances that already exist. If you're planning on doing a mix of choreography that includes some from an existing dance like Thriller, but also some new choreography that you came up with, it depends on how much is recognizably taken from the existing dance. If over 60% of the dance is original choreography, I'll let it count as "original". If you have any questions beyond this, PM me.

This event and the official cosplay contest are not mutually exclusive, so you can participate in both. This isn't an official Kumoricon event. In this contest, unlike the cosplay contest, we're not judging costumes individually - just the dance/overall performance. Costumes factor into it, but we're not awarding anything based on costume alone. For major swag compete in the official cosplay contest; for fun, recognition, gloating rights (don't take this too far), and a love of dance, participate in the cosplay choreography contest. ; D

Some dance examples to get your brain juices flowing! I will update this as I find more, so always be on the lookout.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kv95hPYp-XU

---
You are allowed to have dialogue, like you would for a skit. It's not required, only an option. Just make sure you have one track all prerecorded to perform to, and that dancing makes up at least about 70% of the performance.

Things must be kept to a PG level, choreography and music-wise.

Performances should be no longer than 3 minutes each.

I would
but the only dance I really know is Hare Yukai, and that wouldn't really fit with my Lina Inverse cosplay
Also... I don't even know if I would be able to dance in my cosplay >.> Walking will be challenge enough

my friend and I might drop by and perform our choreography of carmell dansen or maybe some other dances, but our costumes don't match at all, so we'll probably fail in that category. Oh, and can you enter more than once? or just one dance per group?

omg! north italy, HI! (I was ritsuka at skateworld)

I and my lead may enter an original dance but we may not finalize our decision until monday...don't know yet, I really want to but she's kinda up in the air at the moment and if we do the cosplay will not be from the the same series that the music is from.  Is that alright?

:D Yay! That's two official entries, and at least two more planning to possibly enter. Lol yes it will be short, but at least now there's something.

The reason that this is really small is because it was late when I actually got this planned and didn't have any time to advertise. My hope is to get this really big next year. <3

I got a quick question... I saw on the first page that you want entries to be less than 3 minutes. Well, most songs are more than that... is that gonna be a problem?

Audiences tend to get bored if it's longer than that, and it's easy to cut songs down.

I'm not gonna be picky this time around though. I can't afford it or I'll lose entries. 8)

So any dance that's ever been created we can preform? because me and my partner know the Caramelldansen, Macarena, Time warp, Chichi wo moge, and are currently learning the Toroden, and hare hare yukai. So would the Time warp be acceptable? This being for next year of course.....and your the one who did the Algorithm march lol, once I saw you guys start I was like "Dang should have gone up"

I'd like to see less Caramelldansen and Macarena... They get old after a while~
Unless you have some particularly awesome new choreography to them... Then that'd be cool. :'D

I'll accept the Time Warp, but I don't want tons of groups doing it. It might just be something to do at the end with everyone if that many people want to do it.

Well, all cosplay choreography entrants could enter the regular Cosplay Competition....and that would be awesome since it would help ensure that the cosplay competition maintains its originally scoped length (Jaki was talking about possibly alloting less time for cosplay because we weren't getting enough entrants... :( )

OHO, INTEREST!

This was for last year so sign-ups aren't available yet, but there is a form to fill out that you must email to me.

If you sign up and can't do it, oh well. It's worse if we have a small number of entrants, because then there's even less to the event. So if you sign up for it, please do it with the intent of commitment?

EDIT: Is this with the intent of dancing? I see you posted elsewhere about just entering for a skit. That's in the actual cosplay contest; this is something else.
