Non-Anime Cosplay?
« on: July 31, 2009, 01:14:56 pm »
I'm curious to hear people's opinions on dressing up as a non-anime cosplay to a con.

My friend and I are planning on cosplaying as Starsky and Hutch for MEWcon, which is pretty freaking obscure. Especially at an anime con. For those who don't know, Starsky & Hutch is a TV cop show from the '70s that was made into a movie in '04 with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. I'm planning on being Starsky, and I got her to cosplay Hutch. 83 I'm ridiculously excited.

Have you ever done a non-anime cosplay to a con? Ever received any negative reactions or comments?

You'll defiantly stand out, but don't be surprised when the majority of the people there (14-18 years old) don't even know what starsky and hutch is =D. I don't think it's much of a problem people do cosplays from video games, even popular movies. You'll have to make it pretty good to not look like a bunch of onlookers though, I mean most cosplays are quite colorful or distinct, all you got is that hair XD

Well this year me and my brother are going as the Venture Twins. And For upcoming cons most my plans are Video game related.

I don't see anything wrong with it since Cosplay doesn't just mean dressing up as Anime characters.

@ Neon

Yeah I'm guessing most won't even know who we are. XD Given the target age range as you pointed out, it's to be expected. I'm thinking I'll carry around my model Torino.. because the car's gotta be incorporated somehow. Or maybe even a big cardboard cutout or something. 8D I'm really picky about details, so I'm going to try my best to match the clothing.
Oh god the hair.. there's no words.. But be rocking the 'fro.

I think non-anime cosplay is pretty cool. X3 My sister and I are planning on cosplaying from a book this year, if we can manage it.
Possible Future Cosplays:
Sergio - Minor Acts of Heroism
Nero - Devil May Cry 4
Maybe something from Homestuck
? ? ?

At Kcon a couple years ago there was a Leeloo from Fifth Element. I did Zim and Dib with a friend for Sakuracon this year, and I've never gotten or seen anyone get negative comments for doing a non-anime cosplay. Recognition can be a bit low, but that's okay as long as you have fun.

the year I did go, there was a guy dressed as a box of pocky, I dressed as a crappily made pirate, there is this guy who goes as the pope, there's the scooby gang, and I think there's more, so don't worry about dressing up as a non anime character.

Well this year me and my brother are going as the Venture Twins.

EPIC.... hahaha

My friend who is going with me to con is currently trying to decide on another cosplay and it'll likely end up being something non-anime related. I've seen quiet a few people do it before and it doesn't seem like anyone gives them a hard time or anything. There was a guy dressed as Jesus at Sakuracon and it was kind of the best thing ever, so I say do what you want. =]

I say go for it, lol i've done it before. At sakuracon 2009 I dressed up as Harley Quinn but my design version, I was recognized by a few people which was awesome because it gave me break to take naps or buy things without having to stop every step for a photo. While my dad went as Neo one year and Ash from Army of Darkness and sorry to say this lol but I think it's better than having an army of the same character.
lol I know who Starsky and Hutch( you should get a cardboard car, lol that would be epic XD) is and i'm 17, I think it's because i'm just a big nerd love everything from comics, movies, sci fi, and anime. So if you enjoy the character you picked GO FOR IT! Because that's all cosplay is, dressing up as your favorite character anime or not. ^_^
Sides even at anime conventions, if it's not a popular cosplay/character many people will still probably not recognize you XP But oh well ^_^

Though I'm not going to do a non-anime character this year, I am contemplating on these characters for another time...

Larson from Tomb Raider (the original, not the poor remake that should've been obliterated)

Lt. Commander Data
My cosplay plans for 2022 (thus far): Vanir from Konosuba
My son's plans this year (thus far): Penguin Chiyo-chan from Azumanga Daioh

So I went a little insane and dressed as this shady character known as "Spagett" from the Tim & Eric Awesome Show (Great Job!) for a little while at Akicon last year.

OH WOW IT WAS SO FUN.  Because I was in-character, and a total freak.  And I looked sooo ridiculously different from the other costumes I was wearing that weekend (attractive lady-characters) that nobody knew who the eff I was. XD

And most people had no idea who/what I was supposed to be, but were at least amused or I caught their attention.

And a few people actually DID figure out what the heck I was!  And those moments were OH SO MAGICAL.
And I spooked Vic Minestrone.

All-in-all?  An amazing experience, would crack-cosplay again. <3  (Actually, it'll probably become an Aki-con tradition thing for me...)

And Shadow-- you guys are going to be SO hot. <3  Do iiiit <3 <3 ^_^

I truly love seeing random-ass costumes at a con.
People can argue "THAZ NOT ANIMES!!" but I think it's the place for such a thing, cons have such a ridiculous, random atmosphere, and the main focus should be on having ridiculous amounts of strange fun. ^_^

Making one is going to be a little hard. I'm hoping to snag the store-bought version at Spencers, though that would look better than mine will.
