I, personally, don't see him doing a terrible job if he does have the part. He isn't a terrible actor. Plus there are far worse people than him for that role. I don't think there should be a non-Japanese release of a live action on it. We tend to ruin lots of things. But that's just my opinion...

Yeah. I mean, he actually know the story and the characters. The only thing to do is to make sure all the actors could pronounce the Japanese words properly.

No... anime should be pronounced 'Ah-nee-meh' by japanese phonetics, not 'ann-ih-meh' like I've heard as well. xD

The Germans pronounce it Bear-LEEN.

The point is, is when you're speaking in, say, English, it isn't always necessary to pronounce foreign words correctly. (of course, sometimes it is.)

I doubt Zac Efron is an anime fan, so we shouldn't expect him to know how manga is pronounced. I agree, it's annoying, but how many of us used to call it main-ga? I did before I knew better.

Exactly. So many words get translated into the english language differently than they were meant to be spoken, so it's hard to be critical about these things. Especially when I know that I've messed up many words...that are ENGLISH, I never really pronounced manga wrong but apparently I've been pronouncing anime wrong. xD;;;

Well on the flip side look at all the English loan words in Japanese,
I was pronouncing loan words as I would regularly in English and threw off my conversation partner because he only knew the Japanese pronunciation.

And as for translation:

Japan is Nihon in Japanese (Nihongo), but we call it Japan after a series of mistranslations of the Chinese name for "Japan" (I think jih pun, not sure exactly what the Chinese is/was but it meant 'sunrise').

anyways back to Zac as Light;
I'm starting to see it more and more... I dislike both Light & Zac, they have that same hair, and enough narcissism to take down an army of the guilty & the innocent.

But I have a hard time figuring out why anybody would want to redo/rehash death note via live action with American actors...
I mean if you keep the same story, the why have American actors play Japanese?
If you scrap the story and stuff it in America, you killed your fan base...
I just don't get it.

It's kinda like Keanu Reeves being the live action Spike for that Cowboy Bebop movie Fox is doing...

No, you didn't. I should have figured it would be pronounced different in Germany, considering my last name is German and we never pronounce it properly. Although it is cool when teachers and subs say it properly the first time!

I think they're aiming the movie toward non-otaku.
People who haven't really watched Death Note will likely enjoy the movie since it has a good plot, and possibly Zac Effron in it...

Well, should Zac Effron do a good job, this would help kill his Disney slave persona and maybe land him more roles in films that aren't set in highschools.

And I'm not going to disagree. I would never think that Disney would involve themselves in something so dark. Speaking of that, maybe this role would be a break through for Zac Efron. He's has the tendency to be un-liked by several people, but doing a role from an anime that became popular will open up Efron's chances into bigger brighter movies that'll change his status for some people.

Perhaps Zac Efron does wish to expand his horizons. It's certainly a possibility. Granted he was involved with High School Musical but he is still an actor and maybe he wants to challenge himself. Challenging one's self worked for Will Smith look at him now. I'm still more than a little unsure about Zac Efron playing Light Yagami, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and I'll wait for when and if the movie comes out and judge his performance then. That's probably the best way to handle this.
